I just auditioned this Samsung 3D LED TV.
Nice design, slim panel, has a classy chrome bezel frame. Let's start with "standard" 2-D PQ first. To my peasant eyeballs, the PQ looked very sharp, great pop, contrast and black levels. Colours really come alive, and Monsters vs Aliens never looked better. I think this is one of the best Samsung led tv todate. The only thing I didn't like about it was I felt it was too "dynamic" (not sure how to explain) and the screen is highly reflective (like those high gloss notebook lcd) such that if you have prolonged dark scenes, you can literally see yourself in reflection. hahaha. The 3-D PQ was errmmm ... ok. But perhaps because the source material was not originally authored in 3-D, I was only watching 2-D video converted into 3-D. Yes, this unit will convert any 2-D video into 3-D. But of course, one would not expect the artifically synthesised 3-D imagery to pop-out like 3D-authored material. Speaking of which, there was supposed to be a 20-min sample blu-ray of Avatar 3-D, but this was not in the store at the time I auditioned it. Too bad really. Probably try again another day. This model runs on those active shutter specs. There's a slim coin battery inserted into the left side of the spec frame. The glasses felt comfortable. What was interesting to me was that apparently the pioneer batch of units will be manufactured in S.Korea (later batches will be produced in Malaysia) and these will come factory calibrated for optimal video (ISF std?). Also, the first batch will come with this "special Armani-designed" remote control. lol. The remote has a metal faceplate and the keypad is ala Moto Razr V3 style. Actually, it felt rather nice and solid. Not sure how many units will make up the first batch, but looks like HK market will get something like 100-200 units or so. So far, about 50 units have been snapped up. First shipment by end April. Pricing is HK$28,800 for this 46" unit, special bundle during pre-order period will include 2 active shutter glasses, a 3D sampler blu-ray (including the aforesaid Avatar 3D) & a Samsung 3D blu-ray player (not sure which model - did not take note). If you don't want the 3D blu-ray player, the TV can be had for HK$24,800. The next-up 55" model is around HK$45k. I also did an A-B comparison with the JVC GD-463D10. This model runs on the flicker-free polarizing filter technology. What this means to you and me is that you don't need that fancy active shutter glasses. However, you'll still need a battery-free, light polarizing glasses. This unit comes with 2 sets of glasses from RealD. In terms of 2D PQ, the Samsung blows this out of the water. As for 3D PQ, the JVC makes the 3D image come out of the screen whereas the Samsung's 3D image goes deep. Sorry don't know how to describe it any better. So there is a difference in 3D imaging tech between the two. The JVC's glasses should be cheaper than the Samsung ones, but wait for this .... (drumroll) ..... this 46" JVC model costs HK$72k! So much for cheaper glasses ... obviously I didn't spend any more time on this unit. lol. |
