QUOTE(invinciblebunny @ Jun 7 2011, 08:09 AM) 76% of IIE survey respondents (students) worldwide perceived the U.S. to have a high quality higher education system http://ow.ly/54BaDAnd yet we frequently get news reports saying US college undergraduates are learning and gaining less and less, especially in terms of soft skills. Ironically next to these are ads showing off "affordable degrees".

They do have really respected graduate research institutions though. Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Caltech, Johns Hopkins......

QUOTE(devil94 @ Jul 16 2011, 01:50 PM) scholarship nonid pay back marh That would be the ideal scholarship, assuming it paid for certain living expenses as well (namely accommodation). You will find that many scholarships that do pay for accommodation come with a significant bond (employment). You will "pay back" either using money or labour. On the other hand, some people take loans and do not pay them back, even if the interest charged is little. This is extremely unethical but (in our country's lax climate) more effective than a scholarship that includes a bond, in some cases.

QUOTE(Gmruleme @ Nov 20 2011, 10:01 PM) just asking.. if the co-curriculum marks in school is not so good /average I meant, around 60/, is it hard to apply for scholarship? There are many scholarships from overseas institutions for students which are based entirely on academic merit. In those instances, "co-curriculum marks" may not be a factor.

QUOTE(-JUL @ Feb 1 2012, 05:46 AM) Just wondering how do I stack up against the odds of securing a scholarship by scoring 2As for Math & Physics and 3Bs for English, Chemistry & Spec Math in SAM? Not very well I'm afraid. Plenty of straight A* students (for A Level) get denied scholarships... but they usually get to the interview stage of scholarships which are (mostly) not discriminatory.

QUOTE(-JUL @ Feb 1 2012, 08:14 PM) Exactly what I thought! Just gonna try my luck then. Anyway, some off topic question. How do I get notified by thread I posted but did not start? :S If you posted in a thread, and you want to get updates, you may track the topic (scroll up and click track this topic). The subscription should alert you and I think you can control the settings in the user control panel. Otherwise, you'll get notified near the top of the screen if someone replies to your post directly, but not if they replied to multiple persons. Not so sure about all of this, not a mod or superuser

QUOTE(c3rl3n @ Feb 28 2012, 07:24 PM) What does it mean when scholarship forms say that you need to have obtained an unconditional offer from *whatever uni* you're applying to? Since offers come out around mid-year at least, does this mean that the scholarship is meant for first-year students? (because scholarships deadline - March-April, so if you're a STPM/A Lvl leaver you wouldn't get any offers yet.) Whether it's for commencing students or not is a separate issue. An unconditional offer from a school means your application for admission has been successful - you will be admitted should you accept such an offer, with no further academic requirements. Not sure what you're going on about with mid-year offers... all depends on where you're going...

QUOTE(Gordorca @ Mar 13 2012, 11:10 AM) Is it my lousy luck, or is it actually ridiculously difficult to find scholarships for Pharmacy or pure science related courses? Unless you've been admitted into Oxbridge, your best bet would be to attend a university which will give you a scholarship!

QUOTE(Fishh @ Mar 19 2012, 09:39 PM) Any info on scholarships for students wanting to continue studying in Arts ? preferably overseas ? so hard to find em, especially from a Malaysian body/firm/etc . ;_; There likely are virtually none, if you're looking for government owned firms or private firms. Your best bet would be to narrow down the universities and apply directly for their scholarships (these are mostly available from North America and the Asia Pacific), so sufficient funds for living costs would be necessary. Could depend on your definition of Arts. Economics? Other Social Sciences? Philosophy? Politics? International Relations? Art and Design?

QUOTE(Fishh @ Mar 23 2012, 10:50 AM) Art & Design. and I have thought about narrowing down like that. But most of the time when I look into the amount of grants they give out from their scholarships and the attendance costs, I'm worried that the scholarship might not be enough to cover the cost. So I'm not sure. what will happen if that's the case. Will the student be forced to drop out if they fail to take up any loans ? -.- If you can't afford fees and do not receive any aid from the school, yeah they'll exclude you (kick you out). Or, you'll be suspended until fees are paid. As in you may still be included as a student but not studying anything. I don't know any Design schools, can't really help you out.

QUOTE(RitzyHoke @ Mar 23 2012, 07:15 PM) Guys, any idea what do I fill in for the Education background for the Genting scholarship? Forecast or AS? I tried emailing them but apparently either the email doesn't exist or there's some other reason why I can't send it to them. Plus, they didn't state any hotline for inquiries regarding their scholarship application. "Please Attach Highest education qualifications, eg. STPM, Diploma, A-Level, Matriculation" Do I attach my recent AS results or SPM? @@ Doh. It's a scholarship. Attach sufficient results, and include all good results.

QUOTE(lolsk @ Mar 24 2012, 12:39 PM) =] there is only one place to attach the results and they create a lot of barrier which make hard for people to apply ... I can't provide the file with less than 500KB .. Yes, they do that. Call it corporate inefficiency. Or just under-productive labour. But that's how they do it, and you have to adapt, go through a lot of crap to get it right. But it's a scholarship, it's a lot of money... I think it outweighs the cost of your time.
