in singapore's case, yes you need to "buy" to watch 2010 world cup, just like astro's video-on-demand

in malaysia, you have to subscribe to astro sport package in order to view world cup matches, unless you are watching world cup through terrestrial TV

How large is the market for pay TV in Singapore actually, in terms of subscriber base?

dont worry, in Malaysia, if you dont have astro, u still can watch world cup live, just put the antena indoor or outdoor, and RTM will bring match live to you free of charge

Just got back from my trip back to the UK. It's so nice to watch SD tv which is actually in WIDESCREEN.

Personally, I'd prefer that astro swapped most of their SD channels to widescreen before adding many more HD channels. When I tell people that out in Malaysia we have HD channels, but all the SD channels are in 4 by 3 mode they are in shock.

It's just so annoying to look at fat people or have black bars on either side of the screen when its so obvious some of the channels are already broadcast in widescreen e.g. BBC World News. Sometimes the edges of titles are missing!

There's lots of HD channels that they could add though,
CI HD
Bio HD
Discovery HD
Discovery Science HD

On Sky in the UK (the equivelant of Astro) there are over 35 HD channels (and there isn't as much american and malay crap on TV like there is here wink.gif)

if the monitor has hdmi or dvi input + HDCP, then you can watch the astro's HD channels

you also need to add amplifier + speaker for sound

Widescreen SD broadcast is Europe's solution to HD migrating. Malaysia via RTM didn't accept that route and looks like we will go straight to HD instead. Could Astro have pioneered widescreen SD? Yes, they could've but then they would probably angered a lot of subscriber base 10 years ago because the picture look "small". They could switch to it now but they'd have to demand it from their channel distributors.

I was thinking today that in 3-5 years, to get HD we have to pay RM20 on top of the packages we have to watch the HD channels. In 5-10 years, the RM20 will be omitted and the SD channels, who knows how many there will be then, will be free.

Just bought Buffalo 320GB external HDD yesterday. smile.gif
Hopefully I can use it when Byond PVR function already activate..
It should be activate by software update somewhere in this month, isn't it? sweat.gif

BTW, got this on another forum :
"First Local Content for Live transmission - AF8 final concert 22 Mei 2010 .... End to end on HD without convertion"

It's pure HD. Not upscale... biggrin.gif

Buffalo external HDD hav 2 types,
its stated on the box, either it hav Turbo speed data transfer or otherwise
i bot the turbo one but the turbo mode cannot run on HD Media player, meaning Byond also wont be able to run tat, IMHO tongue.gif
