Well I think the best way to gain new friends is to take up classes or join certain activities like swimming and so on.

I've just finished my SPM and took up loads of classes and made many along the way

Its very fun really.I even have friends who are 12 years older than me and they all are so much fun!

So you should just go out there.Just start with a smile if you're not that comfortable with new people
