The only flaw on this phone is the battery life
*
I agree.. I'm on unlimited digi 3G all the time, and I got the FB applet doing realtime update on my N900 desktop + weather update + news update + tunewiki to download lyric automatically when I play music.. and at the same time, N900 allows me to natively sign in to MSN, YM, Skype, Google Talk at the same time.. With all these usage.. the phone only last me 6 to 8 hours before the battery dies.. which is a major setback at this moment..

The phone was designed to be fully connected / online at all times, yet when we do so, the battery dies too quickly for it to be of any good use..

As for the linux terminal, you can run useful commands, install other daemons etc if you know what you are doing.. and its like having a PC! No other phone comes close so far that I know of.. for example go to the Xterminal and type TOP, you will see the Task Manager and running processes.. thats just 1 of the many commands you can learn and try!

It also supports VPN, if you are really geeky you can install OpenVPN and it works perfectly fine with some VPN services in LYN such as bolehvpn.. and you can install torrent clients such as transmission etc and let it run in the background.. the 32gb memory is big enough to do some serious downloading.. but the battery will die faster!! sad.gif

I'd say this device has a lot of potential since its open source..

The only problem is that its not very user friendly so dont recommend it to ppl who like easy-to-use gadgets.. its recommended for intermediate to advanced users..

+ I've used samsung with AMOLED screen before, the hardware very top-notch, the screen very pretty, the camera + video fast, but Samsung never update the firmware, never do any bugfix, never add any enhancement.. I prefer nokia since their devices evolve in each firmware update.. so in the end i swear not to buy any samsung again! LOL

Depending on what type of user you are and what you want in a phone, I'd say the Pro far outweighs the Cons.. and since the phone is charged by Micro-USB, there's a lot of possibilities of charging it while on the move eg battery pack, usb cable etc..

Cheers

Guys i found something cool on my N900 i was able to stream my music/photos thru WIFI to my computer

For Windows 7 Only
Step 1 Go to Start > Control Panel > (View icon by Large icons) > Select Homegroup > Select Choose media streaming options > Allow your pc name > then put your photos in My Photos and music in My music

Step 2 Go Media player on your N900 on your bottom left you see your computer name select it

Step 3 Then select Which music or file to stream direct to your phone speaker
*
Tried and it worked perfectly fine with Music and Videos, but for some reason its not displaying my Pictures... Thanks aspire2oo6!!

And the best part is.. the video doesnt have to physically be in My Video's folder, you can virtually add a video folder into Windows 7's Libraries -> Videos folder or Libraries -> Music folder and it still appears in the N900..

How to add a folder into the Library :

1. Click on Computer
2. Look for Library section on the Explorer bar on the left (You might need to Expand it first, its below Desktop -> Libraries) Right click on the Library you want, for example Videos & click on Properties
3. Click on Include a Folder
4. Browse and select the folder you want to add to the Library
5. Click on Include Folder then click on Apply or OK.

Note : One problem I notice so far is that when you add a Mixed content folder (eg a folder that contains both videos and mp3) into the library, both the mp3 & video appears, even though the library is supposed to be for Videos...

Now its a lot easier to playback media from the computer directly onto the N900!

Cheers

Update : The Mp3 / Audio playback works fine.. but for videos, they appear in the N900 but not all playable.. and some stutters / screen freezes while the audio plays. Could it be codec related? or perhaps insufficient bandwidth.. hmm.. anybody else experimented with N900's media player + Windows 7 media sharing please comment!

Update 2 : I think its codec related. The videos that I can natively play in the N900, I can play via wifi. The videos that I cannot play in the N900, still cannot play.. anyway I've shared 9TB of content with the N900.. it took some time to list out all the songs & videos but so far not much lag, can search for media using the keyboard in the playlist too.. Watching Highlander I (1986) right now live from my PC into my N900.. sometimes its smooth sometimes its lagging a bit, maybe depending on wifi signal (data bitrate)..

The FM transmitter works not only for Songs / Audio, but also for Video!! That means you can mount N900 on the car, use FM transmitter to send the audio to the car speakers, and watch a movie / video & enjoy the sound on the car speakers!! (Caution - Dont watch a movie and drive! *wink wink*)

To do this, play a song first and turn on FM Transmitter & Save (Click on Now Playing on top of the Media Player, click on FM transmitter, select your desired frequency & save), then go back to media library and play a video instead. The FM Transmitter will continue to transmit..!!

Step 2 Install rootsh to access to root later http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/rootsh/
Step 3 Connect your N900 to your computer with cable via mass stroage
Step 4 Copy the file you just download to the root directory you just download aka (Immediately u enter your memory card thats the place contains .music, docs, .videos etc etc paste your file there)
Step 5 Now on your nokia N900 go to MENU > More... > X Terminal > Open it

Inside X terminal ( X terminal is case sensitive )
Step 6 Type root > Enter

Step 7 Type fiasco-image-update /home/user/MyDocs/zImagexxx.fiasco > enter
XXX indicates the speed file u download example (Type fiasco-image-update /home/user/MyDocs/zImage800.fiasco)

Step 8 That is all

-------------
Hi guys,

I followed the steps above and it seems to succeed (selected the zImage800 file)!

However Conky still showed 600Mhz until I reboot the device, then it shows 800Mhz!

yay and thanks for the guide. 600Mhz was really laggy as I'm downloading stuff using Transmission. If I download files 300-400MB in size, the N900 can do that smoothly but currently I'm downloading a 10GB series, and the it was having a heart attack doing that!!

Did it drop to 125mhz? or just stay at 600mhz? Did u restart your phone?
*
Before the restart, it stayed between 200 and 600 mhz.. which left me puzzled for some time.

After I reboot the phone, it goes to 800mhz peak and idles at 125.. pretty good!

And since I also have a 5800, what I do nowadays is make sure 5800 battery is always full, and when N900's battery drains (normally it dies within 4 to 6 hours for me because of my heavy usage), swap the battery and charge the empty one in the 5800xm.. biggrin.gif

Hi all. been using N900 since early of march. been following the thread since the first page, but never posted anything lol. finally got the guts to oc. but keep on getting this error "fiasqo-image-update : not found" something i did wrong? sorry if this is kinda noobiesh. followed the steps by aspire.
*
Things to check :

1. Did you type fiasqo or fiasco? It should be fiasco.. if you type fiasqo you'll get the error message above!!

2. Is the fiasco file in the root folder of the phone?

3. Did you type the command correctly following all the uppercase & lowercase, since it is case sensitive.. lowercase z followed by uppercase I then lowercase magexxx.fiasco (replace xxx with the one you want to use)..

CODE
fiasco-image-update /home/user/MyDocs/zImagexxx.fiasco
