rizvanrp, how do u know all these stuff? ure my new best friends hehe. smile.gif
im on VIP10 package but my connection is not quite stable. when i did speedtest, on diff times of the day sometimes get 7mb/s dl, sometimes 9 and sometimes 8.

....
*
I am also on VIP10 having similar problem. Max dl speed I ever register is 8 Mbps. The upload is worst. It is usually 50%. All these results were obtained from TM's own speedtest.

QUOTE(rizvanrp @ Apr 19 2010, 04:12 PM)
I know all this from my own experience tongue.gif

Speedtest.net is not accurate for Unifi speed testing. This has been confirmed by the bandwidth graph on my dd-wrt Unifi router and the one running on my PC. I'm on FTTH VIP20 and it shows 11-15mbps for KL servers but when I download from my own servers, its 20mbps. You definitely are getting the full 10mbps on your line. Unifi over FTTH practically guarantees full speed (taking into account protocol overhead of course).. If the speed on the IPTV link were to be lower by even 512kbps-1mbps, your Luxe HD channel would experience a lot of streaming issues.

....
*
Maybe I should find these local servers and test my VIP10 speed like you suggested.

I will keep monitoring and testing. After all, we have until June to gauge out Unifi's performance.

You don't have to find local servers to gauge your maximum speed, just use a well seeded torrent (preferably from a private tracker). Just look at my own speedtests on VIP20, I've highlighted actual speed readings from NetMeter which has a scale to it :

a) Speedtest.net KL server

b) Speedtest from TMnet

c) Speedtest from private local server (using SFTP protocol)

d) Speedtest from torrents

11mbps/6mbps from speedtest.net, 2.8mbps/11.9mbps from TM's speedtest on VIP20? Are you joking doh.gif

Look at the TM speedtest, it's not even downloading or uploading anything because the Unifi speed far exceeds the size of their test file. The speedtest from TM is totally bogus.

Check out the SFTP transfer, single threaded its performance spikes between 12-20mbps.. this is with full SSH encryption overhead (which takes a heavier toll on the server CPU the faster it goes).

The best test here to measure your total line capacity is by using uTorrent. I can see that it's giving me 20mbps *exact* and the speed is stable. I get 2.3MB/s on every single torrent I pull from private trackers. 2.3-2.4MB/s is the highest speed the uTorrent client will report on VIP20. This is because about 100KB/s+ will be used by connection overhead. NetMeter will report 2.50MB/s while uTorrent will report 2.3-2.4MB/s.

Torrents give you multithreaded, multisource transfers and will completely max out your line. Speedtest, speedometers and single threaded transfers will be limited by so many factors such as the server you're downloading from and the routing between you and that server. If you looked at those first 2-3 results on a VIP20 package you'd be pissed off thinking TM isn't giving you even 80% of your subscription speed when in actuality you're getting 100% of the speed you're paying for. So stop using speedtest.net and the TMnet speedometer to test our your lines. They do not reflect the capacity of your line at all.

Unifi (FTTH) is not like Streamyx at all. There's is no heavy data loss caused by ATM cell encapsulation. The line is not affected by the physical medium being used. With ADSL, you use oxidized copper and your SNR margin and attenuation readings get screwed up -- your speed drops a lot. When it rains and the telephone poles get wet, it doesn't cause your line capacity to decrease either (unlike Streamyx). The moment the Fiberhome modem is turned on, it already has a digital connection with IP addressing to TMnet's servers. It even pulls the boot image from an FTP server.

Try downloading from Microsoft's servers. Confirm full speed. (for me at least).

So in other words, for VIP10 on uTorrent i should get an average 1mb/s dl right? half from VIP20. the highest i reached is 1mb/s so that should be ok?

anyway cannavaro, what download client is that?

20/8 = 2.5MB/s (2.3MB/s max in torrent)

10/8 = 1.25MB/s (maybe 1.1-1.15MB/s max in torrents)

Get Netmeter while you run the torrent, check the peak MB/s.. should be near 1.25MB/s when your torrents are at max speed

It will not work.. but not because the ports on the Fiberhome are locked. The IPTV STB does not understand VLAN tags, the DLINK router does this 'translation' for it by listening on 2 VLAN IDs on its WAN/Internet port. Its configured to be aware of VLAN's 500 and 600. PPPoE connections are pushed through VLAN 500. The last port on the DLINK router (IPTV port) however is bridged with the WAN interface on VLAN ID 600.

Hey man thanks. I'm using my own router with UniFi now. Some details about my setup:

UniFi package: VIP5 HOME
Router = Dlink DIR-600 H/W Ver. B1
DD-WRT = v24-sp2 (03/24/10) std - build 14144

The only changes I made was that instead of choosing vlan2, I chose br0 as vlan interface and assign WAN port to br0.500. I've tried assigning to vlan2.500 but it doesn't work.

The other thing I've tried is using a box as a gateway/router. I've a spare box lying around, installed FreeBSD on it. This works too. If you guys are wondering how to use FreeBSD instead of the DIR-615 supplied by TM to act as your gateway/router, here's my setup:-

Assuming:
CODE
WAN_IF = fxp0
LAN_IF = fxp1

kldload if_vlan
ifconfig fxp0 up
ifconfig vlan0 create vlandev fxp0 vlan 500

/etc/ppp/ppp.conf:

CODE
default:
set log Phase Chat tun command
enable lqr echo
set lqrperiod 20
set reconnect 3 5
set redial 2 0
set timeout 0
set cd 5
set dial
set login
set mru max 1492
set mtu max 1492
set speed sync
set ctsrts off
enable mssfixup
disable dns
disable ipv6cp
disable acfcomp protocomp
deny acfcomp

hsbb:
set device PPPoE:vlan0
set authname username@unifi
set authkey secret

/etc/ppp/ppp.linkup:
CODE
hsbb:
delete ALL
add 0 0 HISADDR

/etc/ppp/ppp.linkdown:
CODE
hsbb:
iface clear

Then just 'ppp -ddial hsbb' and you are set. Cheers :)

Using BSD/Linux as a gateway is definitely possible and will give you way more control than dd-wrt biggrin.gif Have you had any luck getting the IPTV port bridged onto a separate VLAN though? That's the only issue I'm having at the moment. The VLAN page for ports seems to be hidden @ http://router.ip.goes.here/Vlan.asp however the settings do not have any effect on the port assignments.. neither does changing the nvram variables.

DIR-600 & 615 seem to use the same version of the dd-wrt firmware which lacks this feature.. sad.gif
