IN THE wee hours of Christmas day, Ken Lee’s family had a visitor but it wasn’t Santa Claus.

And he didn’t leave any presents.

In fact, he stole Lee’s handphone and approximately RM15,000 cash.

The 22-year-old handphone seller was relieved that he did not bring home his stock that night or he would have suffered even bigger losses.

“I think he entered our house through our neighbour’s house, which was broken into first,” he said.

Lee was among the 14 victims (involving 11 houses and three shophouses) in Kampung Baru Batu 11, Cheras, who fell prey to burglary within a week.

This included a case that happened on the very morning of the press conference to highlight the break-ins.

Fellow villager Lim Kim Soon, who lives a few streets away, was one of the first victims.

“On Dec 17 around 6am, I was awoken by sounds, and the burglar had turned on the light.

“I only managed to see his back as he fled. Seems like a middle-aged man. He entered from the kitchen,” Lim said, adding that he lost RM2,000 in cash.

Another victim Neo Yong Pau said the burglar entered via the large drain behind his house. He lost RM150 in cash.

Village head Lim Chin Yuan said the villagers were living in fear.

He urged them to be alert and notify the police or him if they should notice any suspicious person or activities in the village.

According to Balakong assemblyman Eddie Ng, who called for the press conference, the police said Batu 11, Taman Kasturi and C180 Cheras were hotspots for break-ins in recent years.

“According to Interpol, the ideal police to population ratio is 1:250. With 115,000 policemen in Malaysia, we have surpassed the needed manpower, hence I urge the police to restructure the designation of duties.

“The villagers are worried and unable to sleep well. I urge the police to take immediate action to ensure no more new case happens,” he said.

Community Policing Association of Batu 11, Cheras, Selangor deputy chairman Foong Kah Loong urged villagers to join the association and patrol the village.

“We patrol the village but the area we have to cover is vast and none of the villagers are taking part.

“Hence, we hope they can join us in keeping their neighbourhood safe,” he said.
