Wanted to get the Pana plasma G10 earlier but they don't make 50". Now eyeing the V20 series. Learnt a lot from this thread.

On bluray player, is BD60 a good player ? Multi region ?

What about Dune Prime instead of BD60 ? Pros and cons ?

Many thanks.

QUOTE(anfieldude @ May 26 2010, 09:25 PM)
The BD60 is essentially a no nonsense BD player.  No region free for BDs (Unless u want to mod it)

The Dune is a jack of all trades. It doubles up as a BD player and a NMT/Media Player. And it can be made region free with a hack.

anfieldude,

Thanks for your feedback.

Can I then conclude that Dune has more to gain than BD60 ? Picture quality, functions etc ?

Thanks.

Poorman,

"The V series will probably be priced for the enthusiasts and the U series for the upper class mass aiming for FHD"

Shouldn't that be the other way round - U for enthusiast and V for upper class ?

Just a typo I assume.

An eye opener for me that a certain model (say V) is NOT the same globally. Different specs for different regions (not just minor differences !). From electricity supply (110 vs 240 volts), I can understand but this double standard (maybe triple standard) is giving me a bad impression of Panasonic. I assume multinational companies do the same thing, right ?

I should now read international reviews with a bucket of salt as the model reviewed may not be the same as what I intend to buy in M'sia. Thanks to all for highlighting this scary truth.

Maybe I should write to Panasonic about this and ask the MD to join this forum ! Ha.

Tried 2 shops in Bintulu for my 50V20 but one towkay came back stating no stock is available AND a new model will be released in July ! What new model is that ? Z ?

Getting frustrated with my intended purchase, none is available here. Maybe I should listen to my home minister. Wait till FIFA is over, they will come out with some sales promotional packages (free gifts etc) and stock should be more readily available then.

A friend of mine in Aust bought a 50" V20A for A$2499 (about RM 7400) with media player, AVATAR bluray disc. By comparison, ours at RM 6799 is still quite OK. I assume their V20A spec is the same as our V20K spec.

He did not do the 100 hrs burn in thingy. Still OK ?

Is this 100 hrs a must, written in the manual ?

Is the 100 hrs continuously ? Or in stages ?

Thanks.

Learnt today that I have to make an order for my 50V20 (RM6200) with no extras. Waiting period - 2 months ! That is the problem we face in Sarawak.

Appreciate your views on whether I should get a BD45 together with 50V20 or get a Dune player. Can BD45 play movie from pendrive ? Assuming it is of the right format for the player.

The discussion on the infinite black thing is casting some doubt on whether I should get this 50V20. Heard so much good things about it and now this. Maybe for normal viewers like me, I would not notice it ?

Vincentboleh & Poorman,

Many thanks for your feedback.

TV in the living room, like most family. My wish later when I retire is to build a HT like a real cinema but smaller, of course. Had even looked up some design on the web ! Ha.

kgsiaw,

What is a HD FTA receiver ? Satelite movies ?

How much did you pay for your 50V20 ? Dealer here is asking for RM 6200 with no gift.

Which one is better, Dune Prime or Dreambox HD 800 ?

Dune has a BR player while Dreambox has internal HD. That is the main difference I know. Any feedback from either users ? Thanks.

Thanks for the update on Dreambox. I had a look on the web on Dreambox earlier and I thought I read something about a multimedia player.

I should be more careful in what I read now ! Ha. Thanks.

Just sharing the journey I went through in deciding whether to get LCD or plasma. Power was one of the criteria. BUT a quick analysis shows that power should not be a major decision maker (unless you are a very GREEN guy).

230 - 93 = 137 W = 0.137 kW
suppose you switch on the plasma for 8 hrs a day, at RM 0.30 / kwh, then you will be paying an extra 0.137 * 8 * 0.3 = RM 0.32 / day or RM 9.9 / month.

For the picture quality, I do not mind paying an extra RM 10 / month for electricity.

My 2 cents.

Am close to place my order soon. Just one clarification to go. Dealer offers RM 400 for the additional 3 years warranty on top of the 2 years warranty. Total price is RM 6200 + 400 for 50" V20K. Like to know whether one can get a cheaper 3 years additional warranty directly from Pana web. Can't find out there as I need to have the serial number. Thanks.

Sifus,

For the uninitiated who knows nothing about TV picture quality, please explain the unit used here while assessing the picture quality i.e., 0.004ft/L etc. Thanks.

Compared the U20 and V20 specs on Pansonic web. Noted the differences in the list but don't understand or can visualise the differences. Can someone who has seen both give feedback on the differences in layman terms ? Thanks !

V20 trounces the U20 in black levels and colour accuracy. Clearly higher contrast ratio on the V series. In simple terms, more pop in the V series and better accuracy (more so after calibration)

anfieldude,

Many thanks for your feedbcak. Reason for asking is, I am getting tired of waiting to get my V20 in Sarawak. Latest promototion is U20 plus BD45 at only RM 5499. Thus the question on U20.

Was thinking of getting G10 last year but they don't come in 50" size. Is U20 equal or better than G10 ?

Many thanks.

Thanks to all for your advice.

As my plan is to get a good plasma TV which I intend to stay put for the next 5-10 years, think now I will go for V20.

Wish that Panasonic is more considerate on their market coverage in Sarawak and sabah.

It is a compliment.

Notes on Model differences:
I love D24 durians and presumed they were the best until Uncle Ho bought some Musang King back to Macau & Hong Kong.
After having tasted Musang King ("Mau San Wong"), your taste bud will forever changed and you will not go back to D24.
Not everyone like Musang King or D24 thou and we cannot assume they are the best etc.  Mat Salleh or some HongKies hate them.

V series is the "Mau San Wong" while U Series is D24. Both are watchable i.e. you won't get blinded / depressed by watching them.
The differences are price and preference. Unlike durians, changing TV is costly and you shall decide what you want.
XO and Kampung durians are other options i.e. Samsung / LG ..............

VincentBoleh,

I like your analogy being a durian lover myself. Now it is definitely V20 for me ! Ha.
