I hope your sister is not one of those pharmacists who recommend Vitamin C tablets to those having the cold/flu.

Currently I'm taking vitamin C to prevent flu and cough.

Ester-C which is 1000mg per tablet per day.

Rather than taking sore throat , flu medicine .

Just something to prevent this simple ill

Seriously got pharmacist think it is a cure meh?
Yes, prevention. That's key to note. Some people don't understand though and think it is like a cure when you are sick. smile.gif I like my 1000mg vitamin C too. Been reading some material that suggests going up to 2000-4000mg a day could be beneficial but I haven't done enough reading. Will see if I want to consider trying uping my current dosage in the future.

It's not even needed for prevention. Supplements such as Vitamin C, B, D, etc. are only for supplementing any known deficiencies, until a solution has been found as to alleviate that deficiency. If you are truly lacking Vitamin C in your diet, it can be easily concluded that you are having a real bad diet that is deficient of a whole lot of other vitamins too. By taking your regular vegetables and fruits as part of a balanced healthy diet, you don't even need these commonly touted supplementations. Of course, there are certain other essential nutrients that are hard to find in everyday diet, now those are worthy of some supplementations.

Well there is literature to suggest more (or even ALOT more) vitamin C is better than less. Not to mention, I have read somewhere that the 'recommended' daily dosage of Vitamins like C and E (D I don't worry much in Malaysia as we get more than enough sun) are well below what is in fact optimal.

It isn't a matter of a bad diet in this case, just a matter or preferring to be on the safer side since the only 'bad' side effect is that ones pee is a little neon tongue.gif I have health issues in my family that I prefer to avoid... or at least be able to say that I did in fact take every possible precaution short of feeding myself via tubes to the the exact nutrition formula I need.

If you wanna put it that way there is also literature supporting that consumption of ascorbic acid, and other chemically/artificially derived supplements will do more harm in the long term than any good. Many common health problems usually stem from a poor diet over anything else. An organic guava a day provides you with guaranteed benefits, as opposed to the questionable effects of ascorbic acid, plus a whole lot of other vitamins and minerals.

Ohh interesting. I was not aware of such a thing. Any links? I would like to read more on that.

And I 110% agree with the bolded statement-which is why I said it isn't an issue of my diet being bad (I have already taken steps to researching and optimizing my diet and learning about nutrition, many of which alot of people may consider impossible but I am doing it). However, you have to admit to variations according to genetic predisposition of health problems.

In any case, thank you for sharing. I hope you share some links because I would very much like to read about it.

Forgot the sites but the book Supplements Exposed by Dr Brian Clement is a good place to start your search.

In your case if you're really worried, try radically changing your lifestyle and diet, adopting the following:

Paleo diet (see Mark's Daily Apple)
Mindfulness based meditation (see Deepak Chopra, Richard Davidson, Matthieu Ricard)
Regular exercise (see Dr Mercola's Peak Fitness Program)

Note to critics: The list of reference above doesn't indicate an advocacy of belief system, rather, an easy reference point for many of the core choices made therein, which are undoubtedly beneficial.

Once you get the above in order, then look at your available financial budget and determine what supplements you should be taking to tweak your health and play around with science to optimize your daily life experience. Consider family history in the selection process.

I will check out the book.

Dude, I have followed MDA for years. Please stop making me repeat myself about the fact my diet is in order and my exercise is in place.

I am very aware of my family history and take minimal supplements I feel necessary(But am always happy to learn more). Your insistence on speaking to me as though I have yet to cover these basics are annoying me.

Good luck educating others.

Seems as though you're in need of some meditation classes laugh.gif

And you need to learn to say 'Alright. Noted' when people have politely informed you that your speaking to them as though they are not aware of basic is unacceptable.

Well in that case the book should serve as a primer for judging what's good and what's bad for you in terms of supplementation. By the way for reference the forumer named Tham here has some really good knowledge on the effects of many herbs and supplements for particular conditions. Perhaps you can gain some knowledge from him there if you're interested.
