Just turn my 5 years old abandoned desktop PC to HTPC

Bought a new graphic card Palit GT640 2gb w HDMI, successfully have video & audio passthru from HDMI to Yamaha A730 amplifier. Play 1080p BDMV movie w Dolby TrueHD & DTS HD Master Audio without any glitches. All movies stored in Seagate GoFlex Home 3TB.

Old pc setup;
Intel Q9550, 4GB RAM, 250GB WD black, gigabit LAN, bluetooth Apple keyboard + trackpad, Win 7 ultimate x64, Nvidia 8600 GT replaced with Palit GT640 2gb, XBMC v12.2.

Wow..Yorkfield Quad-core for HTPC  notworthy.gif . But not power-saving friendly IMHO...  sweat.gif

Indeed... not so power saving... only turn it on for couch potato time smile.gif Was eyeing on Dune HD base 3D but due to budget constraint, decided to just replace the graphic card...

Thanks. Any recommendation of GC suitable for me? The sound will be transferred to the TV via HDMI output right? Not from my PC speaker?

I just bought Palit GT640 with HDMI, works perfectly for bluray movie & HD audio passthru to amplifier.

I just plug in my Apple Mac Mini using  XBMC to run BD-ISO on my HT system and for those who are new,here is some settings you need to do on the OS X settings.
1. Go to system preference -> sounds ( there will pop up a window box and first setting is sound effects,choose the ' play sound effect through' to your AVR name
2. Go to Output and select your AVR name
3. Go to XBMC and in the audio settings choose Audio Output to HDMI

Then we are all set to enjoy decoded DD 5.1 from AVR.

One thing I am not sure is why it can't decode DTS-HDMA as my ISO has the audio imbedded on it? Can anyone explain what I am missing?

OS X does not support HD audio. Try to install Win7 in ur MacMini and you should have HD audio passthru to ur amp.

Thanks paskal.
I've been trying to find information on these HD 6xxx cards but can't conclusively see if that ANY HD6xxx card will output DTS HD MA or Dolby TrueHD.
I know I may be a little fussy here, but half the joy is seeing that DTS HD Master or TrueHD light come on on the AV receiver. biggrin.gif

I went to Asus' website and there's no info.
Sapphire's website shows some has it and some doesn't say.
AMD's website simply says all HD 6xxx GPU chip will support DTS HD and TrueHD.
Am I safe to buy ANY 6xxx card?

I bought Palit GeForceĀ® GT 640 (2048MB DDR3) for my DT. I'm watching bluray ISO, mkv via XBMC with DTS HD MA, Dolby TrueHD without missing a bit to my Yamaha A730.

Highly recommended card for HD audio passthru.

Its time to refresh my old htpc and build a new one. I have the following draft config;

CPU Intel i7 4770
CPU Fan NOCTUA NH-L12
Chassis Silverstone GD07B
Mobo G1.SNIPER Z87
HDD Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
RAM 4GB PC1600 8 chips x 2
Graphics Palit GT 640
PSU Enermax NAXN 500W 80Plus

Total price about RM3200++

I'm still waiting to see if there will be a new MacMini this year. Hope to have either Haswell or Broadwell CPU.

Brilliant spec.  If you don't play game on it, try to consider latest A6 chip with A88+ mobo.  Its cooler, energy saving and fast enough for all Full HD videos.

Yup, another choice will be AMD CPU. Have the budget for RM3000 mainly is to claim max for PC tax relief. Gaming is optional as GT640 won't be so good for full HD gaming. Power wise I think it is reasonably fine as Haswell i7 & GT640 do not consume that much of power anyway.

I really like Silverstone GD07 case as I can stack it up to my Yamaha amp. Nonetheless I'm still hoping for Apple to release a Haswell or Broadwell MacMini. Will see at June keynote.

Thx for the info, appreciate it smile.gif

I do hope that Apple will release a new MacMini this year, but to enjoy DTS HD MA or Dolby TrueHD, I still have to install Windows OS...

different people have (usually) vastly different opinions regarding AMD vs Intel solutions.
but one thing remain consistently true: Intel solutions are usually better in energy management compared to AMD. it's been that way for decades years.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i...ew,3521-18.html

so if you don't mind paying a couple bucks more for cheaper initial costs, get AMD.
but if you're planning to turn on the system for a few hours per day, the extra ~200W per hour, per day will add up to a substantial number at the end of the month.

tho it's not impossible to build a system capable of handling full HD material whilst maintaining ~50W (or less) power.

I am not addict with online gaming. Normally surf net & torrent. Most prefer watch 1080p & dts sound system.
Then need connect to my home theater too.

If your home theater system supports HD audio (DTS HD MA, Dolby TrueHD), make sure you go for graphics card that support HD audio (eg GT 640) or onboard HDMI (eg Intel NUC) that can support passthru to your amp.

If your amp doesn't support HD audio, optical out will do the job nicely.
