IMHO, I enjoy the process of building the HTPC and the way of config it. if you're feeling headache and mafan on this DIY.
pay more get branded HTPC: dell, hp, etc....  but personally I don like that...  why? hardware limitation. software side both way able to do same thing, but good for branded pc is pre-installed software/config ready, plus if you're in trouble, call phone support or remote assistant that you also paid in package warranty.

But if you share your TV with your grandparents, perhaps a media player is more userfriendly.  So it really depends on your usage at home.

This is very subjective.... U need a simplified frontend as an interface for this to happen....

I build my HTPC to serve as a download machine and can play whenever I want. That is the beauty.

Just love this..... This is the main reason why I build mine in the 1st place.....

Just curious,

does everyone leave the HTPC on 24 hours ??

do you have a LCD monitor together with the LCD tv / Plasma tv ?

I like the Windows Media Center interface but it could not play .mkv format... what other media center look alike s/w do you use to play .mkv files ? I hv to manually goto Explorer and click on the .mkv and the Mediaplayer classic will launch..

I wanna compile a list of current HTPC users with h/w specs & htpc chassis on the first page and what common s/w do you use to power the HTPC...

This should give new HTPC users an idea what are the common h/w or s/w to use/install..

Windows Media Center can play .mkv files.... It depends on wat codecs u hav installed in ur PC....

If u wan an alternative, u can check out XBMC or Mediaportal..... These are the most common frontends that everyone is using for their HTPC....

@djlah: U can use Ember Media Manager to scrape.... When u already updated the database in EMM, just choose rescrape movie or change movie..... If u wanna edit the details of the movie, it is under Edit Movie option.... Then set content in ur XBMC and scan for new content....

I would recommend Aeon Stark or Aeon65 depending on which XBMC build u r using... PM me if u wanna know more.... I'm using EMM and XBMC together.... biggrin.gif

Spec 2 la since it hv more cpu & gpu power.. but if you wanna install latest os like win 7 ultimate edition ( for the media player s/w ) , it might be a bit under power la... perhaps install win xp with xbmc perhaps a better choice...
*
Spec 2 will run win 7 fine without any hitches....

in XBMC, how to rename TV series file to make it appear with episode name and episode picture?
I try to rename with many type of filename but still fail.  icon_question.gif

If u r using XBMC built-in scraper, u hav to export the video library 1st.... U can do this in the settings menu in XBMC.... When u r asked single file or separate file, choose separate file.... U'll get all the nfos, thumbs and fanart in individual folders of ur movies and tv shows.... Edit with xml for info display and replace the thumbs and fanart for pic.... Then import it back to ur XBMC.... It should reload everything that u changed....
