can u view the size of the contents in the "unallocated" partition? how does it show up in OSX?

*
I had gave extra 100GB to my around 250GB backup data out of my laptop.
About 390GB is recognized as "Unallocated" in WIndows Disk Management.

Too bad, there is no way i can view the "unallocated" partition under Mac OS.
It seems i gonna lost all my data like that..haha...Supposed the 1TB HDD is to save my data. Now it end up gone-case.

Tarvalslain87,

Yeah after i done everything. And i googled thru quite a few of different forums for solutions. I didn't know it can be so complex to make partition to workable in Mac OS & Windows.

So far, what i read is better to do partition under Mac OS X- Disk Utility.

*There are only 930GB space available for the 1TB WD EXT HDD. Around 630mb is the WD software CD laugh.gif *

if it's just a backup, as in all original copies of the files are still in ur laptop, then juz create new backup lah smile.gif

creating a partition is not complex...it's just that u have to properly plan what u want to do 1st. get the partitions set up, then can start pasting files

u can try ur luck using Drive Genius. it's not free, so pandai2lah tongue.gif

Haha pandai pandai lah... yea partitioning is not hard but since it involves two different OS and multiple formats that makes it harder only =D but already summarised what format is needed so shouldnt be a problem and do all partitioning in Mac OS shouldnt be a problem

I had installed Disk Warrior in the Mac OS. It can not do anything to the missing "unallocated". haha..

Wonder Disk Warrior can rescue the "unallocated"?!

@dvlzplayground
do you remember if at any point you did a 'partition' process? that would explain why your data is missing...

cos if the partition table has been altered, usually data is lost.
so far, in my experience, only PartitionMagic (windows) can make changes to partition tables and keep the data.

as for cloning your drive i recommend SuperDuper!
it makes the backup drive which u cloned from your internal HDD bootable too..
so its easier to use..

As for SuperDuper!, what's the difference with Time Machines Backups? Coz when i wanted to copy my Mac HD to my Ext HDD, it stated that it will be deleted my Time Machines Backups copy. Is Time Machines and SuperDuper! same thing? So if i've backed up with Time Machine when i no need SuperDuper anymore?

Help explain anyone? biggrin.gif

superduper does cloning, time machine does backup. two different things. (actually superduper can do backups but time machine is a better solution)

what superduper does is make an exact copy of ur hard drive. meaning, if u clone to an external, u can boot ur mac from the external drive using USB, n it will be the exact same thing as what u have on ur internal drive. this is very useful for upgrading to a new hard drive. just clone to the new HDD and swap it in. done! if time machine, need to make a backup on another HDD, swap drives, n restore the new drive from the time machine HDD.

the drawback of cloning is that it doesnt update itself. whatever new files u have after cloning wont get transferred to the clone HDD unless u manually copy n paste them. for time machine, new files are always sent to the time machine drive everytime u back up

so time machine = backups. superduper = cloning. if u backup with time machine already, u dun need superduper. anything wrong with ur internal hard drive, juz restore from time machine.

cloning also means if anything happens, you can immediately swap the clone drive with the faulty drive.
when I have the means, I would set up a nightly clone, so even if the drive fails 100% ... i will only lose 1 days work.

Time Machine is slightly different, cos you backup every day, so you can go back to (for example) Dec 2009 and get back a file from that time, even if you deleted it yesterday.

I have a ext WD Mybook 1T.. Fat32... I tot I was going to be moving it between with my other windows computer. But I found that I rather not be lugging it about. I have filled it to about 80% and I was thinking is there a way to change it to HFSJ while retaining the data inside? Its kinda tricky to be moving about 800GB worth of data LOL

also, anyone tried http://ntfsmounter.com/ ?
