The 2nd leg of the QF will be after the Chelsea match @ Old Trafford. Now getting a tough draw which means we might need to get it done in 2nd leg might not sound ideal.

Glazers hope to cut down Red Knights in battle for Manchester United

QUOTE
From The Times

March 18, 2010

The Glazer family are considering a second round of refinancing in an effort to remove Manchester United’s huge debt burden.

The American owners also hope that the move would help to stave off a planned takeover by the Red Knights.

Initial talks have taken place within the Glazers’ inner circle about how to get rid of their payment in kind (PIK) loans that could total £588 million by the time they are due to be repaid in 2017, The Times has learnt.

No final decision has been taken and a deal could be many months away, but a second refinancing would represent an about-turn for the Glazers, who, publicly at least, have shown little concern about the PIK loans until now.

The debt, which stood at £202.1 million according to the latest accounts, is rolling up at an astonishing annual interest rate of 14.25 per cent.

The club’s £716.5 million total debt has been cited by the Red Knights, a group of City financiers-cum-United fans, as the key driver behind their plans to organise a takeover.

It also emerged yesterday that the multimillionaire boss of one of the UK’s biggest hedge funds is one of dozens of rich United fans considering joining the Red Knights. Jon Aisbitt, the Man Group chairman, has held talks with Nomura, the Knights’ investment bank, about signing up.

Despite the debt, United’s commercial revenues are soaring, with the club expected to announce today a sponsorship agreement with a mobile telecommunications company in southern Africa, their third such deal in a week.

The Glazers have yet to appoint a bank to oversee the planned refinancing, although it is likely that they will turn to J.P. Morgan, their trusted financial adviser, which drove through the recent £504 million bond issue.

There are a number of ways in which the Glazers could refinance the PIK debt. A source close to the Americans said they had already had several approaches from investors who would want to buy a stake in the club.

A well-placed banker told The Times: “The Glazers have been approached by lots of groups about a deal.” Rather than sell a stake, however, the Glazers would prefer to refinance the PIK at a more favourable rate of interest.

“Crazier things have been done than this,” the banker said. “What you will see in periods of buoyant global markets like this is that investors become anxious to get their hands on new bond issues.”

Because the interest rate could rise to 16.25 per cent if a debt threshold outlined in the PIK notes is exceeded by August 16, there is good reason for the Glazers to secure a refinancing package as quickly as possible.

Under the terms of United’s bond, the Americans will be able to use up to £70 million of the £117 million of cash on the club’s balance sheet to start repaying the PIK notes, for which they are personally responsible.

A spokesman for the owners declined to comment.

I do hope he can recover in time not only for us, for England too but I don't want him to go WC. It can be a dangerous place to hurt his knee again. Another thing is his match fitness, we need experience in the midfield and he could provide that.

I still remember how he scored the fk against Ars few years ago..I miss that..really do..

Payback time

QUOTE
United have a score to settle and three points to win, while Liverpool have 18 reasons to put the skids under our title challenge...

What’s the beef?
We double doubled them in 2006/07 and 2007/08, but Liverpool have beaten us in the last three meetings – 2-1 at Anfield and that horrendous 4-1 at Old Trafford last term, and 2-0 at Anfield earlier this season. We’ll be looking for some serious payback. For Liverpool, fear is the spur: fear of the 19th title that inches us ahead of their tally. They’ve long considered themselves kings of the English league – lose that record and the essence of their very identity is under threat. Anything else? Well, just the fact that it’s United v Liverpool.

What’s at stake?
First and foremost, three points. United will be desperate to avoid any slips in the race for the wire – especially at home. So a maximum haul has to be the primary aim. Liverpool arguably have more to lose. Rafa has boldly promised the fans fourth spot, which looks anything but a dead cert with Villa, Spurs and City still in the hunt. The consequences of not securing that slot could be huge – could Rafa survive it? Then there are the financial ramifications of failing to reach the Champions League – a huge blow to the club’s coffers, never mind pride.

Marked man
The first name United will look for on the Liverpool team sheet will be that of Fernando Torres. El Nino has scored in two of those last three Liverpool wins, getting the better of both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the process. Steven Gerrard is the other danger man – skipper, inspiration and driving force. Without those two Liverpool have often looked ordinary. Having said that, both were on the bench last season when Liverpool beat us at Anfield and Gerrard missed this season’s game. All eleven should be watched like hawks, then – no quarter given.

Personal grudge
If anyone will be on an individual crusade to set the recent record straight against Liverpool, it will be Vidic. The big man has bad memories of recent encounters: in last season’s 2-1 defeat at Anfield he was sent off, in the 4-1 at Old Trafford he had a thoroughly forgettable game and was also sent off, and in this season’s 2-0 Anfield defeat… he was, that’s right, you guessed it, sent off. He’ll be looking instead to memories of his first four league games against Liverpool – four clean sheets, four wins, every minute played and not so much as a booking. That’ll do nicely.

The fans’ view
Liverpool fan Nick Moore: “The cliché about the form book going out the window is true – I wouldn’t be surprised by 3-0 either way, though I’m much more pessimistic than last year. In the 1980s United’s sole crumb of comfort was regularly beating us. Now the roles are reversed. We want to block that 19th title, but also need the three points towards a Champions League spot. How times change.”

United fan Rob Murray: “Obviously it’s a big game, but we get the same number of points if we beat them or one of the bottom clubs. Liverpool always raise their game but if we play well we’ll win, simple as that. I’m fairly confident because generally we’ve played well in the big matches this season.”

UNITED ANNOUNCE MTN DEAL

QUOTE
Manchester United have announced their third major sponsorship deal in a week.

Following on from high-profile partnerships with Telekom Malaysia and Turkish Airlines, United have today added a seven-figure contract with African telecoms giant MTN that will see the company become their exclusive South African telecommunications partner for the next three-and-a-half years.

"The partnership with MTN is a very important step in the club's plan to get closer to its family of fans based all over the world," said United chief executive David Gill.
