Phone reception on the HTC Legend is not good. Also HTC Legend runs Android 2.1 but does not support Live Wallpaper like HTC Desire or Google Nexus One. For those who wish to upgrade their OS in time to come to support new features in Android 2.2 (Froyo), then forget about HTC Legend. Its not worth buying in my opinion.

Oh ya...a few more things wrong with this phone.
THe Aluminium body is prone to scratches and getting chipped off if you put them together with your keys, instance. Without a protective casing, this phone will be full of scratches if one is not careful. Also the phone slips off your hands very easily due to the casing. Aside from not having Live Wallpaper ( you will notice you cannot install them into your phone),  WIFI is weak...possibly also due to the Aluminium casing I believe. Plus, HTC Sync for the HTC Legend is also flaky. Not sure why, But this could be a problem with the HTC sync software running on the PC, most likely.
Also no video call camera and battery only lasts 1 day of usage. And I heard that HTC Legend will most likely have to wait a long time before it gets the Android 2.2 (Froyo) upgrade which is full of goodies and performance improvements.
*
wow its hard to seriously take a guy who quotes his own post 40 minutes after he posted it

but I respect you for telling what is unsatisfactory for you about this phone, but stop telling your opinion like a goddamn fact dammit
particularly on that Froyo thing, it may or may not be true but what I know is the truth is that there is no way you can know what happens in the future anyway particularly when the only HTC official statement states that all their phones release in 2010 will get the update..
I cant take seriously your other claims after that statement
who gives a f* about the live wallpaper, its not something that make or break a smartphone
you'll change it to a static one sooner or later when you realize battery life is more important

seriously though, I dont think it matters coz people looking to buy legend over desire/N1is looking for something else,
you might be right, the price difference arent all that much, maybe around rm200 to 300 or even lower
so why buy legend when you can have desire
coz desire is fugly as hell thats why, seriously it looks like HTC just says "hey lets put in badass processor and slapon a giant screen on top of it" and then they forget to give it to the design team, seriously it looks lifeless to me, even the color is just downright ugly, i never like the look of the nexus one and the desire looks worse..
okay its not that bad, but there is nothing sexy about it, which is why you go and buy a legend
it gives you a decent performance that gets you away from the apple-sheep herd, and doesnt make you look nerdy at the same time

my thoughts on legend so far:

Pros:
-sexy form factor
-superb build quality
-adequately smooth user experience
-unique look.. not many people using this
-english text prediction is good and accurate.. it needed to since the QWERTY keyboard is kinda cramped..

Cons:
-battery life (well its quite okay for day to day charge but i still hope that it would last 2 or 3 more hours than it did on average)
-signal! not really a problem if you are on strong signal area but it is noticeably weaker than other phones

what i would like for it to have:
-bigger battery?
-stronger antenna..
-more accessories.. limited pouch available..
-malay language text prediction...

errr... read the sticky... if thats not enough theres even an app for accessing paid market apps now
never tried it though

@yeokeeyee

First lets get the apps for android that HTC mysteriously left out:
1) Voice to text (I use low res sense style)
2) Nexus One Gallery (3D gallery - way way better than stock and smooth too)
3) Voice Search (damn cool)

Get all three here with instructions

Free apps:
4) Gesture search (google's own app, very very useful for quick searching for stuff on your phone)
5) Lookout mobile security (antivirus)
6) Astro (file manager)
7) Handcent SMS (allow for more customization for messages and nice popup for quick reply)
8) FxCamera (Nice camera effect)
9) Juicedefender (extend battery life)
10) K9 Mail (better email app)
11) Ringdroid (make your own ringtones from mp3 files that you have)
12) The star online (malaysian news)
13) Barcode scanner (useful when you browsing apps online and want to scan QR code)
14) AppMonster (I use this to keep track of my apps)
15) Movie Finder (OMG so useful)
16) Tajm (nice looking literal clock)
17) Battstatt (nice looking literal battery status)

Paid apps:
16) Widgetlocker (lets you customize the lock screen - even put widgets!)
17) Laucherpro (tired of HTC sense UI? use this and frankly this look way cooler and faster - cant use HTC widget with this though)
18) Beatifulwidget (Skinning clocks anyone?)
19) SwitchPro (Very very nice looking power management widget)
20) PureMessenger (superb widget that can combine all messages, email, facebook, twitter - skinable too)

Apart from countless others, this is my list for must have, of course there are lots of games too

erm to those who rooted,
Is the unrooting process on Legend easy?
I seriously don't want to trade a two year warranty with rooting if there is no other way back to restore when I need it.

Actually I'm looking for something that can turn on the screen and show the unlock screen only, not unlock. I don't want to be pressing the power button fearing that it will be worn out before the warranty is over.
*
yes it can do that too
you can set it so that you can press any button to get the lock screen on

and btw u do want it to worn out before the warranty over, not after wink.gif

Its in advanced ---> Easy wake mode
now you can press any button to go to the lock screen

could you please try everything first before assuming anything
unless we are not in the same page here but I think I get exactly what you mean..

I do understand your concern, my power button is losing its "tactile-ness"
but this is a hardware issue, if its ever gone wrong, i believe we should be able to claim warranty? shouldnt we?

cheers

this is pretty weird that all people reporting different things..
any official change log?

for me,
I havent notice any significant changes EXCEPT the signal!! yes it have come alive now, dont know whether this is because of the update or DIGI just installed a new tower in my place lol.. Eventhough Ive read that they are improving the wifi not the mobile signal, I used to be getting zero bar in my room... now its 2 to 3 bars out of 4 so I doubt its coincidence..

I dont really tested out the ringer bug just yet as I dunno the condition to replicate the bug... before this sometimes it happen sometimes it dont.. I tested out a few calls, everything normal but like i said i dont really know how to replicate the bug..

New SMS? didnt even notice this because i am using handcent hehe..

Im quite happy with the update, Battery life for me is somewhat unchange it is still one day give and take... so it doesnt really matter becoz I juz plug in my phone at night before sleep..

I got better signal which is crucial because before this I got zero signal at my home which is hugely annoying (bought a hotlink prepaid just to compensate for that).. now its all good hehe..

SMS bug didnt affect me coz I used handcent all the time..
I did a hard reset also and find out that I have way more internal space than I did with the same amount of apps and data (I backup before reset) probably it deletes caches too

and what is this app starhub TV?, If you use HTC sense it will be hidden, replace the home app with anything other than that like launcher pro and you can see it.. useless though as it doesnt work, I believe starhub is a singaporean sat TV company?... why load it to our phones? digi got their stock from singapore?

After updating to latest firmware, realized that after I use wifi and turn it off, and then I try to turn on 3g, it won't connect unless you reboot the phone. Anyone has such problem

I've decided to disable juicedefender today to just see the effects it had..
results...
well, according to juiceplotter graph (you dont need to enable JD to use this)

Unplug time: 5.15 a.m
plug back time (batt 10%): 7.00 pm

so this day i got 13 hours 45 minutes
steep drop on 53% at 3 pm, other than that time its pretty flat, i dont really recall doing anything on my phone at that time, but I know i was out and about at that time in a hot day
The most important sign is that during that time the graph line is in red, it means that my battery is >36 degrees celcius, and I check everywhere, steep drop in battery % happens when the battery is in the red zone... and the most flat ones always in green zones ( 28 degrees and lower)

the day before with JD on:

unplug time: 10.30 am
plug back time (batt 17%): 1.15 a.m)

so i got around 14 hours and 45 minutes with 7% more battery
BUT, This is a less productive day than the next day, i believe i went to sleep at 3 pm (im a student got no class so sleep la lol) ;right when the graph showing green lines and it went fairly flat up until the night..
but i guess JD still saves a fair amount maybe an hour or so.. tomorrow im going to disable syncing of facebook as I dont find it important (gmail and other things is still kept on so we'll see how it goes)

Why im disabling JD?
well, I put speed and beauty above everything else, with JD on, i notice a significant drop in performance, i really hate that
I know its just 2 days of data but i'll gather more as time comes, and my belief at this time is that I can do without it

I encourage people who post "OMG wtfff the firmware update has drain my bAtt!!!" to post hard data as well, assuming that you already had Juice plotter app before the update and after, so we can all see and make inference from the data and not from hearsay/ placebo...

QUOTE(ABeatC @ Aug 12 2010, 01:50 PM)
Just a note, when you use JP, try and get 3D gallery and you'll notice an album call cache, you can't find it on Astro, and when you see where the file is from, it states unknown location, and my brother deleted it, somehow his phone storage got more space, so maybe it might eat up your space.

I've been off JD for 2-3 days now, and so far, it doesn't really change much. Last time when I get to the 35 hour marker I had JD on, yet my phone was like 80% idle for the whole time, and now that I have it off, the best it can hit is around 24, but this time I play games, surf net, etc etc. So can't really say it works for me.

And from my view, JD saves your battery by turning off your mobile connection and wifi right? So if you turn them off manually, what's the point of having it?  blink.gif
*
well i still have ample space so not deleting it just yet as it is quite useful

wow.. i mean your battery life is double mine, can you give more info? did you turn off APN all the time? are you on a unlimited data plan?
do you call/ receive call regularly?

and yeah i understand if you can do it yourself why you want JD to do it for you...
but for me JD is for user who want things to be automated for him.. turning things off and on all the time is not convenient at all, unless you have the time to do that.. most users want the important emails/ messages to come through timely but he doesnt really need the APN to be on all the time.. so thats where JD comes in...

hi i wanna know how to download the firmware FOTA update.??

coz when at first i got the fon i did not download the software update. jusnow i checked on my software number it is stil 1.31 butif install this update shud be 2.05 right.

can anyone help me on this??

any recommendations on downloading reliable softwares and games for Legend?? (such as dictionary, organizer)
*
just go to settings ----> About phone -----> System Software update

WOA, if you dont use other SMS application and use the stock one, there is a bug in the update that will put the latest SMS at the bottom instead of the top.. Use handcent SMS application if you dont want to encounter this bug

my recommended apps

what do u mean by this "if you dont use other SMS application and use the stock one, there is a bug in the update that will put the latest SMS at the bottom instead of the top.. "

im using the sms applications in the phone itself, not any installed software yet in my fon. still new with android.

so where can i download these applications u mentined from a reliable source?? download.com will do??

thanks for ur very informative reply. =)
edited: i got the link in ur post. thanks. but imwondering where to click on to download the aplications. it seems like no buttons for me to click to download although ive already logged in as member
*
if u update to the new firmware there is a SMS bug
the bug is that to read new SMS you must scroll to the bottom, which may annoy you if you have lots of SMS
i dont know how to put it much more clearly than that
I recommend to use handcent SMS application that is not effected by this bug

hmmm, it seems like youre quite a new user,
please dont follow the link for the first 3 app if you dont know what youre doing, it is not essential
for the other apps that i mention
use wifi if you dont have unlimited data plan, and just go to "market" on your phone
just search for it, it will automatically download and install for you
you may not find some apps i mentioned because it is paid apps, dont worry, test out the free versions first
to access paid market apps you can read the sticky in this forum

i guess just claim the warranty,

it never happen that extreme to me, sometimes before it sort of stuck there, but never to the point of me not able to turn it on, just that its tactile feeling is gone.. i think the cuthole on the aluminum is too small, need to use a lot then it becomes more "longgar" hehe

mine already no problem now

it's for froyo only. eclairs don't have.
*
are you sure bout that?

The new one for froyo is for voice command... but google search by voice you can get for legend, just not on the market for some reason
you can get the voice to text, and voice search apk here with instructions

*android forums is down at the moment, check back later

@feiraron, u go SIS to repair the button? How long they take?

No I didn't, I just use it as normal and the problem gone,
as I said, I suspect that the button cuthole on the aluminium is too tight, wears out after a few weeks of usage maybe

hei guys... icon_question.gif
I might get a Legend SOON...
so i read this thread...
but it's kinda lengthy...
Just hope if there is sumone who can summarize for me??
New to android world too...
1) Android OS v2.1 (Eclair) is the official one for legend?
2) The update recently have wad pros n cons? So to update or not?
3) Be4 update, the phone has any bugs?
4) Legend is way better after rooting?

I guess that's all question i have for now??  hmm.gif : hmm
*
1) yes
2) Pros: better signal over wifi and 3g network, no more silent ringtone bug (some users still claim it still have the bug)
Cons: SMS bug
update/not: up to you, but it is an essential upgrade for me as i live in a weak signal area, most of the time i couldnt even get a signal before, now 2 to 3 bars
3) Silent ringtone bug, it is a bug where even if you left the "silent on pickup" (a feature HTC included in this phone) option off, whenever receiving calls your ringtone will still be muffled if you move your phone
4) never tried it before, but rooting alone does not really give you anything performance wise (except the use of several apps such as shootme and titanium backup), its the custom ROM that you want, so far there is a few custom ROM based on froyo (android 2.2) if you are curious to try, but they are still in development stage and has a few bugs here and there, check out XDA forum legend section and the Unlockr has a good guide on rooting, flashing and unrooting the HTC legend

* for me I'm waiting for the official froyo as we should have it in Q3 this year (which we are already in), before that im sticking with the official 2.1, its not like its unusable or anything without the froyo update! I'm still very satisfied with my phone and it functions without any real problem that annoys me at all.. and legend is already smooth as it is
