Well I pretty much completed my second mod. There was too much dust from all the wood that I did not want to subject my Nikon to, so I do not have progress shots. Just the finished photos. The base of the case was made with just a 1/2" piece of sanded ply, The rest was made out of African Padauk and a piece of 1" hardwood. The finish is a wax buffed out by hand. Think it turned out very well, fairly close to what I had originally planned, didn't stay too far from plan like my G5 build.

Running 2 320GB Scorpio Blacks in raid. System boots win 7 and automatically starts XBMC very quick.

Gigabyte HD5450 plays all my media flawlessly. Have not tried running any games on it, but it did score a 7.1 in win 7 for gaming graphics. So I might try a few games out later down the road.

Rest of the inside. Tried my best to eliminate some of the cables. Had to cut and re-solder a few (white sleeved cables). At first I was going to just keep all the cables their original lengths, but it was just a mess of wires. Had to desolder the USB connection on the Veris media station modify an extra USB cable to do away with the big external to internal adapter they provided.

This shows the clearance. There is no back on it as of now. I miss aligned the video card cut outs, so will have to redo.

Now for the overall shots.

well, I was concerned about temps when planning, I have ran it for about a day and a half straight and it pretty much runs between 44C-53C. I'm not concerned the only thing I might add a small fan on the side or just make a vent for the GPU.

got the African Padauk on ebay, was $40. The other piece of wood and aluminum used was just laying around the house.
Thought about some LED, but did not want a bright box while watching movies. Just the 2 blue LED. 1 on the veris (shows when remote is pressed) and then the other showing pc is on.
Yeah I'm not completly satisfied with the front either. Will upgrade to a blu-ray drive later and will most likely redesign the front. Most likely will try to conceal the drive as that is what bothers me.

Thanks guys...
After looking at it for some time now...I agree it was a poor choice for mounting the dvd drive. But I have a fix so I will update this next week or so when I get the piece I ordered to fix it...

I will be redoing the front of the case next week hopefully (waiting on some more wood). When I do I will take some more pics and try explaining more in detail what I did with the rest of the case as well as the new front...

when I do my next pc, I think I will make it out of wood again. If I do then yes will do some windows and what not to show off the inside. This build however sits in my entertainment stand and cannot be seen except for the front. Also the insides are sorta plain, no sleeving, lights, or even attractive components worth showing off or highlighting with a window.

Another update, will be another week before I can reveal my facelift. Seems the piece of wood I ordered is 1/4 inch too short. I guess that's why its best to measure instead of trying to go by memory, I was too lazy to find a tape measure.....

Ok, finally received my wood. Here is the start of my facelift. To start I had to cut the african padauk board down to size and also cut the oak 1" square down to size.

user posted image

Here is the apple dvd drive door that I will be using to accomplish this mod. I will be adding a piece of oak veneer to the face of this so it blends with the rest of the wood.

user posted image

Shot of it all to give an idea of how it will go together. Of course the backside will be routed out 1/2 -3/4 inch so the dvd drive door will sit much closer to the face, almost flush.

user posted image

And now glued together, I'll have to wait a day for it to dry completely. Will give another update Saturday. I plan on doing the rear panel Saturday also, so hopefully I can share that too...

Yes the glue has dried...lol....Sorry I have not had a chance to update, will get something up tomorrow. Been busy with work, put 14 hours in yesterday. Off tomorrow so will get this updated.

And yes you could say I am a carpenter/furniture builder. It is not my job but a hobby of mine. I built every cabinet in my kitchen when I remodeled it and a couple entertainment stands and a few other odds and ends.

Read my mind, that is what I did. Here is an update.
After gluing the wood, I started routing a groove for the dvd door to sit in the face. I said I would post detail of this part but there was just too much dust and my Nikon is my baby, I did not want to expose it to all the dust. So here are a few more shots of it finished and tomorrow I will open the case and get some shots of the inside of the front and explain what I did.

Here is a shot of the PC in its spot on the entertainment stand. Excuse all the mess....should have cleaned it up a bit before the pic..Also this is the best TV show ever...Any Dexter fans out there.

user posted image

And now a close up of the new facelift. The wood stripe doesn't quite flow together pefectly, the grain is a tad off but this looks so much better than the ugly DVD drive.

user posted image

As you can see there is no eject button or power buttons on the PC. Everything is controlled from the remote you see on the top in the picture above. Pc is running a custom mod of win 7 32bit done by AMC over at Project Alchemist called DeepBlue7. Takes about 7 seconds to start and automatically starts in XBMC.

user posted image

For those that do not know how the Apple G5 drive door works....A few pics...When the drive opens it runs into 2 curved tabs on the apple door that push and slide the door down and then the dvd tray slides out. It is spring loaded so when the drive closes it just pops back up.

Thanks for taking a peek and commenting. biggrin.gif I will get some more shots from the inside so anyone that wants to do something similar can have a better idea of how it all goes together.

I assume you mean $$..If I remember right it was probably around 450 USD...I do not remember the price of the wood it was a little high I do know that much, so it might have been a little more. As for temps I am thinking of what else I could do to lower them. I live in FLorida so it gets pretty hot here also and I do not run the AC much. Just yesterday when I walked by the case I could feel the heat and when I checked the temps they were:
GPU 68c
CPU 52c - average of 2 cores
My best bet is probably to just ditch the video card, I think it is causing most of the heat build up. I also have to open it up and fix my dvd drive. somehow it got cocked to the side and no longer opens. Been really busy but when I do begin to sort it out I will put up some photos explaining some of the case like I said I would a while back.

Thanks

This case Has now led me to the need of a new project. I think a media server will be built in the near future. Running out of room on my G5 mod. Got 1.5TB of movies and tv shows, and another 2TB of anime.

Thanks again for all the comments
