Lets talk about surround speakers cables. Most of us have been concentrating on front channels cables.

What type of surround speakers cables do you use? I am using QED classic normal type. Do you think by using a sliver type will improve the rear sound significantly?
What's your view?

Before this I was using only Monster THX for surround but since my run is more than 50ft I have to get a bigger cable than 16awg to reduce the resistance. So now I'm using QED Original (about 13awg). Good improvement for the surround especially during peak volume.

Anyway just for reference...

For those who doesn't know what AWG your cable is...

[attachmentid=1464961]
Remember you must measure only the diameter of copper inside and not together with the insulation tongue.gif

In theorytically cable in long running distance will loss its capability to carry audio signal.
So i think u should seek lowest gauge wire for example 12 AWG etc...Only my 2 cents bro

Yep agree. But for cheapo solution, if you run thin wires for surrounds, just increase 1 or 2 db for the rear speakers. Solve most people problem. But if you are listening to audiophile multichannel sound, you'd better get proper cables.

Why did I choose 13awg cable over a bigger cable like 12 awg or maybe even 10awg? Got a few reason.

1) Smaller cable easier to route (we are talking about surround speakers after all).
2) The bigger the cable will reduce resistance for sure but at the same time capacitance will increase. High capacitance over a longer distance will loose the higher part of audio signal. Not good for surround eh where usually carry mostly mid n high of those special effect audio.

That's why you need to know what is the optimal size for the length you are running and not simply hentam the biggest cable you can afford smile.gif

It depends on your speaker. If you have what I called "lazy" speakers such as Wharfedale, MS, PSB, etc then silver cable will help to bring out the details. Speaker on the bright side like my Klipsch sounded better with copper cable.

For example my previous QED SA XT sounded good with PSB but make the Klipsch sounded so thin. QED XT300 which is not silver plated sounded better with Klipsch.

icon_rolleyes.gif Bi-wired speakers employ crossover frequency filters. With the binding post jumper bars removed the crossover frequency filters direct the high and low frequency connections from the amplifier to the corresponding connections at the speaker terminals.

Stereo speakers that are bi-wired have a cleaner sound because separating the amplification of the high and low frequencies lowers the distortion at the amp, sending a less distorted signal to the speaker’s crossover frequency filters.

When bi-wiring, two sets of speaker cables are used (one positive and one negative) for each channel. One set of cables is wired to the high frequency (tweeter) binding posts, while the second set of cables is wired to the low frequency (woofer) binding posts.

If you have bright surround speakers, better choose pure copper cable. If you have the "lazy" one then silver plated is better.

If you wall mount then using banana on speaker side might not be possible. If that's the case then Silver Anniversary would be a better choice than SA XT coz SA XT a bit difficult to terminate bare wire because of the aircore tube.

No problemo ^^ i can wait nod.gif is there any other ppl who have tried such cables willing to comment on their quality? if no one then i think gilbertlhl will be the 1st rclxms.gif

I might follow soon since i have tons of spare Cat5 lying around the house now (didn't wanna waste those cable if the whole project get messed up cry.gif ) and also I'm preparing to move into my new condo so i need to get the correct measurements and placement for all the cable I'm going to put in my bedroom (2 PC, 2 Laptops, 1 Main Server (Multimedia sharing) and also my HT set. (have GF not wife laugh.gif )

Gonna be a nightmare to hide all those cables rclxub.gif

lol just a figure of speech, but none of them is longer than a meter biggrin.gif i think they go cheaper by the box instead of per order lengths.

Last i asked is RM285 for a box of 200M at jalan pasar but i dont quite know the quality of those cable. I was just browsing thru the shops.

Will pass you more info once i go down next week or so. Mind letting me know how much roughly you need so maybe we can share a box?

Did you get banana plugs with that or bare wire. How thick iszit? Im thinking of getting a pair too for my new bookshelf speaker.

Wondering where to find cheap banana plug for it. Dont need so good as Airloc and dun really like bare wire.

It's 2.5mm2 diameter, so that shld makes it about 12/13 AWG. I bought it bare as I have some spare bananas. it would be ok for surrounds, but won't recommend for fronts.
