Chile Quake Sparks Tsunami Warning For Pacific
16 Dead In Chile After Powerful 8.8 Earthquake President Michele Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile and said the death toll was 16 and rising. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific Region. The warning covered South America, Antarctica, the Pacific Ocean islands including Hawaii, New Zealand, Japan and as far away as Russia. The quake's epicenter was off shore about 200 miles southwest of Chile's capital of Santiago and 21 miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck at 3:34 a.m. The major quake put surrounding areas under a tsunami warning. Waves of nearly 8 feet have been reported along the South American coastline. The PTWC issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a Ecuador, Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica. The earthquake shook the capital of Santiago for more than a minute and set off a tsunami. Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine. Its epicenter was just 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio River, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake. The quake was felt in Argentina as well. The U.S. West Coast Tsunami Warning Center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation. The world's most powerful earthquake on record struck Chile. A 9.5 magnitude quake struck southern Chile on May 22, 1960. That earthquake left about 1,655 dead, 3,000 injured and 2 million homeless. That same quake created a tsunami that struck Hilo, Hawaii, causing 61 deaths there and 138 deaths in Japan. A tsunami left 32 dead and missing in the Philippines. |
