hokkaido : autumn almost finish excepts outhern part. might be able to enjoy both red leaves and snow (5C~15C)

tohoku(sendai etc) : mid autumn, around 10C

kanto(tokyo etc) : early to mid autumn, ~15C

chubu(nagoya) : early autumn, 15-20C

kinki(osaka,kyoto) : early autumn, 15-20C

chugoku (hiroshima) : early autumn or still green leaves

kyushu (fukuoka) : early autumn or still green

IMHO, its one of the best time to visit japan but if u aiming for places to enjoy autumn sceneries, most probably it will be crowded because oldies will be visiting on weekdays and working families and kids will be visiting on weekends.

Weather is not so cold(except Hokkaido) so it's a good time to visit but hotels will be expensive.

Not sure where u r heading to but it might be too late for tokyo/osaka area. Maybe just in time for Tohoku and Hokkaido. Some sakura lasts for a month but the really beautiful ones last only a few days up to a week.

I'm living in Hokkaido. I just came back from Europe and compared to before I left for Europe, the amount of snow is getting fewer every day because no more below 0 temp all day so snow and ice starts to melt during day time. There are still snow falling but If you want to play with snow, maybe you need to get to ski resorts. If I'm not mistake, during the end of April last year, there was one cold day and it snowed for the whole days but most of the snow melted the next day because if was warm. So pray hard so that snow falls during your stay in Hokkaido. You may be a little to early or just in time for sakura in Hokkaido.
