Hi guys... i just got back from Tokyo yesterday morning (23/3) via AirAsiaX after staying there for 8 days... So, allow me to share with you all some of my experience during my stay from 15/3 to 22/3 in Yokohama and Tokyo...
Basically, i stayed in Yokohama the first 2 nights and the remaining nights in Tokyo... I'm not sure whether i was lucky or not, but i was never troubled by the transportation system in both cities despite the claims that train stations are being shut down or train frequency has been reduced significantly due to power saving efforts... However, i did not take the shinkansen as i was in Tokyo city the entire time, so i'm unable to comment on that...
Some ppl might expect chaos in Tokyo after seeing news and stories of the situation in the country itself... However, from my observation, everything seems fine and ppl are still carrying on their lives as usual i.e. rushing to work, trains are packed like sardine can during rush hour, shopping, crowded streets on weekends at Haruku, Ueno, Asakusa etc.. However, i must say that the crowd is probably smaller than usual days...
True enough that most stores/ supermarkets are running low on food, but pls be assured that u can still find instant noodles, sandwiches, breads, bento sets, and snacks at most convenient stores... In fact, 2 days before i left most shelves have been refilled with food.. And mineral water/ drinks are plenty in store.. If the above are not the kind of food u wish to consume during ur stay in Tokyo, many restaurants are still serving food till late night...
Any after shocks? Of cos there are but i dun think it was major enough to cause an alarm... Citizens of japan are probably used to it...
The only setback is that most shops are closed by 6pm to conserve energy and those that runs 24 hours halved the energy consumption by switching off unnecessary lights... Therefore, don't expect to see the usual amazing Tokyo night view or tall buildings/ structures beaming with lights... But the above didn't really bother me as i started my day early and by 5 or 6pm i'm already back in my hotel resting...
Now, i guess most ppl are more concerned about the radiation... Every morning, i switched on the tv for news and also searched the internet for updates before i leave the hotel... One thing i find reassuring was that the news and talk-shows used illustration to explain the current radiation level and whether such level is dangerous to human's health... Call me naive or whatever, but i do find such explanation very comforting...
So, that's all from me.. Feel free to ask me questions... Oh BTW, some sakuras are blooming already!
