Positive for NIM. The OPR rise will benefit: (i) banks with more floating
rate loans which would be re-priced up immediately, and (ii) banks with
higher CASA resulting in a lower rise in the overall cost of funds. CIMB,
RHB, HLB and AFG have high proportions of floating rate loans at
>70% of their portfolios, while Maybank, CIMB and AFG have higher
CASAs at >30% of their deposit profiles (table 1). Net interest margin
(NIM) will rise immediately, the extent depending on the adjustment in
deposit rates, banks’ loan-deposit ratios and interest rate gap profiles.

Up to +4% on profits. Based on the banks’ Dec 2009 loan-deposit
profiles, we estimate the earnings impact to range from -1% to +4% for
2010 (10 months’ impact) assuming a 25 bps rise in the lending rate,
accompanied by a similar 25 bps rise in the deposit rate (table 2). The
main beneficiaries are AFG, followed by RHB, CIMB and Maybank. As
for AMMB, despite a high proportion of fixed rate loans at 57% of its
portfolio, the earnings impact is quite muted on rising CASA.
