Dlink DIR-615 QUOTE Highlights from low-tier Draft-N roundup (disclosure: affiliated, though interpretation/conclusions may not reflect stated views): -Only 32 simultaneous connections, compared to 80 for the next lowest device. This is not a router you want to use BitTorrent with. -50% throughput loss when using WEP/WPA. -Shorter range than comparable devices. May be sufficient for small apartments, but you may experience problems w/ multifloor locations. -On the bright side, you're likely to be using G clients. Wireless throughput is within 30% of reaching performance provided by high-end equipment. Auto-QoS wasn't supported at the time of the review, but was added to the latest firmware (for hardware revision B2). It's not a bad router, as its overall performance, although lower than everything else, is only behind by a small margin. The dismal number of simultaneous connections is a step back to 2003 though; for this reason I wouldn't recommend its use in anything more than households w/ 1-2 concurrent users. Review: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30387/96/ Basically it's worrying to use this router for torrenting :/ |

QUOTE(DeaDLocK @ Feb 23 2010, 10:49 AM) Sigh!!! Well done. My hats off to you I called them up and forced them to give me a free HSBB trial (because I am a private individual in a house but I have a RM688/month Streamyx Enterprise package for five years already). They said okay after I strongly persuaded them (hehe), but when they went to check my access, they said my exchange isn't activated yet! I live in Shah Alam and there is a FTTH box on the telephone pole outside my house, so I thought it should be okay. Added on February 24, 2010, 6:25 am QUOTE(dr3nchippo @ Feb 23 2010, 12:17 PM) really?? i've been getting at least 600-800kB/s download speeds with utorrent, and that's with the download speed limited!! I'm not a tester, but looking from the hardware review their saying it's limited in simultaneous connections which benefit torrent downloads no problems torrenting with it so far... yup.. im able to reach same speed with G-based network and my wired pc... unless of course they started offering 100Mbps speed.. that would be a diff case.. hahaha Yeah that speed does look good, but isn't it logical it could be better with a better router for more connection with peers. Regarding iptv didn't someone mention something about it using your internet connection ? So say 50% is for internet usage, and the other 50% is for IPTV o_O: Then how about when your not using Iptv ???? Can you also not get the iptv so you can utilize 100% for internet only This post has been edited by Moogle Stiltzkin: Feb 24 2010, 06:27 AM |

QUOTE(tohff7 @ Feb 24 2010, 11:00 AM) I don't think they will count the data from IPTV to the overall bandwidth usage per month. But the package is 10mb isn't it ? So the Iptv will be using a slice of that 10mb am i right Furthermore, IPTV data stream will be purely local and its servers etc will mostly located in Klang Valley. So i don't think IPTV will be throttled or lagged (assuming if equipment didn't breakdown Internet will be for internet. IPTV will be for IPTV. There is more than enough bandwidth capacity of the fiber to support both. At minimum, fiber are able to achieve 100mbps. HDTV requires only about 5-10 mbps of bandwidth Theres also 2 types of ftth which are GPOn and GEPON. The more expensive one can handle simultaneously iptv and internet without one effecting the other. We are using the cheaper variant which means iptv will fight for bandwidth with internet usage for your pc Added on February 24, 2010, 11:15 am QUOTE(tohff7 @ Feb 24 2010, 11:00 AM) I don't think they will count the data from IPTV to the overall bandwidth usage per month. QUOTE(Instant_noodle @ Mar 23 2010, 01:30 PM) seeing that 'terms and conditions' are on their side, plus the 'best effort' policy they offered... what else can we do? I totally agree help line? we all know what it does... MCMC? i feel like my complains thru emails ended up in it's 'spam' section... then we have our minister of communication... who warns of legal action against errant private groups and bloggers... who wants to ensure Internut not abused... who wants to filter the internut... who warn us be wary of western influences like facebook, twitter that would damage religious believes... who wants us to think thousand times before mixed marriage... who puts silly and irrelevant quotes until people had fed up with his kuno-minded thinking and made him famous thru #yorais... an incompetent minister overlooking an incompetent communication department that monitor an incompetent GLC, and conficker is still harassing TMNut servers last year when the virus is supposed detected and clean up by most commercial software and open source software (clamwin) in a short period of time, what can you expect? fast? stable? reliable? we got stuck and forced to use it becoz of the monopoly... if other isp like singtel start their service here, we'll see share for TMNut will drop drestically. Added on March 23, 2010, 2:06 pm QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Mar 23 2010, 01:54 PM) They bundle IPTV together with HSBB. It's part of their Triple Play thing. If you want to watch additional channels (besides the free channels), then you'll have to pay. e.g. +RM10 for Channel [V]. The free channels include normal TV channels such as RTM1, 2, 3, NTV7 and 8TV (Should have more). If you don't have to subscribe for additional channels, then you only have to pay for HSBB. European country is better (except France....)Just hopefully they will come out with Video on Demand services so we can enjoy HD movies. Personally I don't think it will lag when streaming these contents and it will be better than Astro during rain or cloudy weather. Trust me, even if other ISP comes here, their price will still be higher. They need to buy the lines from TM. Helpline personnel are not trained thoroughly. What they can do is to inform their supervisor or technician about problems, but if you think that they can advise you, think again. They are only trained to follow the manual. Fortunately our internet is not filtered that much. Look at countries like China. They banned most of the websites, citing that its not good for their country. Look at SG, the users are not allowed to torrent. Which policies do you think is better? Malaysia's or other countries? Anyway 10 mbps broadband is suppose to be 1.25 MB/s download speed max is it? I used this website to calculate http://web.forret.com/tools/bandwidth.asp?speed=10&unit=Mbps This post has been edited by Moogle Stiltzkin: Mar 23 2010, 02:13 PM |

QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Mar 23 2010, 02:11 PM) Here's what we can do to help out the problems faced in Malaysia:-
Not everyone can afford to pay for dedicated or Virtual shared server services. But yes it would help :/ We can't even do it from our own home cause the speed is too crap The way i see it, if our home user internet is fast, we can host the contents from our own pc or server at home like they do in Japan and South Korea because they are able to. QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Mar 23 2010, 02:11 PM) That may help. But keep in mind that there is a google project to build the internet wire from singapore to japan. Why wasn't malaysia apart of that? So whats the chance that they would add a server in malaysia, when they most probably would put it in singapore QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Mar 23 2010, 02:11 PM) Torrent is throttled in malaysia QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Mar 23 2010, 02:11 PM) Work as tm management no point. Your working for the companys interest, not the public. If your company is a monopoly, and the government is happy to let it be, why would you want to change the status quo to be more unfavourable to you? The shared holders will get pissed. That is why it is up to your government to liberalize the internet infrastructure so that it will be more competitive and lead to cheaper broadband. This happened in japan and south korea, as a result their citizens can enjoy fast and cheap broadband, whereas we are still paying a high price for a sub par broadband speed. QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Mar 23 2010, 02:11 PM) Here's things that will not help:- Pointing out problems here is not counter productive :/ it just highlight to people that tmnut has a real problem and they need to fix it. We know the system is wrong, and our politicians should start listening and clean up the mess they have let run for too long (tmnut monopoly :/ ).
problems = rant no problem = no rant Anyway back to HSBB. It's almost here so after seeing the price we will see if there is anything more to complain about This post has been edited by Moogle Stiltzkin: Mar 23 2010, 02:30 PM |

Well think about it.
Casual internet surfers (1mb adsl): - only look at websites - download very few mp3s ( very small files which are mp3 not flac lossless ) - games (latency not as good as ftth, but it's good enough) Downloader (10-20 mb ftth) - download at fast speed = save time - latency in fiber optic is better then adsl for sure. May be better latency in games is what it means. - upload speed is also better if you want to share stuff with people online - can stream videos through utube and iptv without stutter (not possible with 1mb adsl) This post has been edited by Moogle Stiltzkin: Mar 24 2010, 03:05 PM |
