Optical output of a HDTV

I would like to know is it that all HDTV only output sound channel in optical mode in stereo?
I am in the dilemma of choosing TV which can output a proper sound channel from my TV to receiver in surround sound as my receiver doesn't support HDMI.
Furthermore with the recent black level issues regarding Panasonic Plasma, would it be a reason to avoid Panasonic for the time being until it's fixed? I have to be quite hurry for my purchase, if possible by March. What's the other option if not for Panasonic, budget around RM6k for a 40"+ panel

Anyway, I don't think the black level issue will be as bad as everyone thought and I believe most people will not even notice it. |

most TV does not support 5.1 sound.
Your AVR does not have HDMI, can always use optical or coaxial to connect mar from the decoder/media player/BD player etc.
next best thing for Plasma 40" at RM6k?
Try look for any leftover's Pioneer 428...should be around that price now....
