so guys, for Songkran festival, apart from Khaosan Road, where is the 2nd best place to stay for backpackers?
*
Silom?
We'll be staying at pratunam area though. ;p
But I heard that Khao San and Silom are the best places to be for Songkran.

You can stay anywhere in BKK as long as you know how to take transport to Khao San.
Personally i dont want to stay at Khao San because it will be a mess there.
Going in and out of your place will be difficult and you be wet the whole time.
I rather stay at more high-end area as said by Mugenz, Sukhumvit, Siam, Pratunam much prefered.

if u looking for online paid reservation hotel in bangkok..
try using sawadee.com
there is certain hotel that offer another 10% disc if you booked 30 days earlier..
i just come back from a 3d2n trip from bangkok and i stayed at cmyk@myhotel ratchada...
and it cost me around rm160++ for 3d2n (include tax and paypal fees as i paying using paypal)
they have a promotion rate right now for walk-in customer just 999TBH for a night
quiet nice hotel..walking distance to huai khwang MRT station...
to sukhumvit station it will cost you 22bath..then you can change to asoke BTS station for skytrain

and another thing is if you have CIMB ATM/debit card..
activate it for oversea use...and they will be no extra charges if you withdraw your money from CIMBTHAI atm machine
and the exchange rate is quiet OK la...withdraw 5000bath and the bank will charge you rm499.50 tongue.gif
there's one CIMBTHAI atm that i found near asoke BTS station..
it just nearby Exchange Tower...
http://www.bangkok.com/images/bts/bts-E4-asok.gif
when you walk down the stairs..turn left...from there you can deffinately see the signboard for CIMBTHAI around 150m

Coz I don't like Khao San and Silom area... ;p
I don't mind traveling to these places to join the festival but I don't want to stay there.
Plus, because we want to do some shopping... ;p

There are many hostels in Silom / Khao San area.
Are you looking for hostels? or a hotel?
I personally love LubD Hostel.
They have branches in Siam Sq and Silom.
It's a bit pricey for a hostel but I love the environment and the cleanliness.

The BTS and MRT doesn't reach Khao San (one of the reason I won't stay there).
Forgot what the closest station is though, but it's still a little far.

i've stayed in amari watergate before, but never in baiyoke. the staff are friendly, rooms are big and clean, with huge flat screen TV. I requested an upgrade and they gave me one, so no complains there biggrin.gif

if you dont mind paying extra, maybe u can try novotel platinum, its just above the shopping centre. or grand diamond suites next to it.

Going to BKK 5 days 4 nights for shopping purpose only. First timer. Going to Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Platinum Mall and MBK. Which area should I stay? Pratunam or Siam? Any newer and modern budget hotels/boutiques? Preferably really close to shopping heaven.

Thanks in advance!

Read the feedbacks on tripadvisors for both Baiyoke Sky and Baiyoke Boutique.. don't think we'd be staying there.

Pratunam will be convenient for wholesales and Platinum Mall shopping, furthermore is cheaper compare to Siam area.

I recommend Tango Vibrant living place, boutique style accommodation with affordable rates.

http://www.tangobkk.com/home.htm

Got 10% discount for early bird booking, also check agoda maybe got further discount.

its just 3mins walk to wholesale market and 10mins walk to platinum walk. 5mins walk to airport rail transit. 1 station away to Siam BTS station interchange.

I paid below rm100 per nite with breakfast back in march 2011.

Thanks for the rec. Actually eyeing Tango as well. Did you try using the airport rail transit? How much is the ticket per person? Do you recommend taxi or airport rail transit?

i forgotten how much for the normal airport rail transit with stops all the way the station near Tango d. But its 100% cheaper than taxi's charge of rm35 per way.

Actually the airport transit is very convenient, its just located below of the airport. Just take lift down and walk abit only. If u dont have much luggage, just take the rail transit.

Coz u gonna shop, therefore go back that time can take taxi coz ur luggage heavier d lol~ biggrin.gif

if i didnt remember wrongly its around 90baht
