Street TT!

There is the SWPA Introduction To Travel & Street Photography Talk by Szetoo Weiwen at Galeri Petronas, KLCC this Sunday 28th February 2010. So we'll have a lunch TT before the talk, and after the talk we'll go street shooting as we should be fresh and inspired by the talk!

What: Lunch TT, Street Photography Talk, Street Shooting Session
Where: Center food court KLCC then Galeri Petronas KLCC
When: 12 noon Sunday 28th February 2010
How Much: Free!
Who:

Itinerary:

12noon-2pm: Lunchtime TT at center food court in KLCC. The one below TGV Cinemas.
2pm-4pm: Street Photography Talk
4pm-4:30pm: See the SWPA (Sony World Photography Awards) Exhibition (if you haven't).
4:30pm onwards: Street shoot!

I would rather we TT first, go for talk, get inspired, then street shoot, instead of street shoot (without the knowledge from the talk), go for talk, then TT, then the talk evaporates.

Where will we street shoot? I have two route ideas:

A) KLCC to Mandarin Oriental to Wisma UOA to Pavilion.
B) KLCC to Zouk to Dang Wangi LRT (and maybe the back of St. John's Institution, if you want some cool vines).

Put your preferred route in the list also!

1. albnok (bringing flash gels, Opteka 85mm F1.4, Peleng 8mm F3.5 circular fisheye and Vivitar 24mm F2.0)
2. zicron (route A)
3. finejava
4. Mo0 (80%)
5. RaplaJingga
6. strangex2
7. noprob (50%)
8. destfull
9. jengjeng
10. signither
11. dingenius3
12. syukri
13. lwliam (will be joining for lunch right until after talk then need to chiao d)
14. snake4168 (any route will do)
15. Hin Leng
16. braindead_fr3ak
17. braindead_fr3ak's girlfriend
18. chronic_gam3r
19. Seng_kiat
20. Seng_Kiat's friend

Sharing of thoughts.....

In taking a photo, what is the esscence of your image? What do you see through the lens that may capture the heart of a passerby? Is it worth a second glance? For we are not "Shooters" and we are not "click-ers". The press of a button shall not just capture an image, but frame the distilled concentrate of life. Whether it lies in contemplative thinking, sheer beauty or provocative thought, a photograph must never be taken for granted. It is in the neglect of thought process and internal delving to find meaning that truly results in the mass produced photographers today. Technology has made it easy, cheap and efficient, but it is man who still take art for granted. Remember, twas man who created the machine, not the machine who created man........hence twas man who fabricated the camera, let not the camera take over the man............

lugiamcg : i believe it is not that you dont have creativity. Everyone has creativity, but creativity alone is not enough... to apply raw creativity to produce something beautiful is mainly applicable to rare gifted individuals such as savants. We , the average man/woman must learn, experience, see, feel and practice to be able to apply our creativity into something aesthetic, that can be appreciated by another. In photography, there are rules( i prefer to think of them as guidelines) to make a photograph in terms or lighting, composition, arrangement of subject, perception and dof. By constantly experimenting with these parameters and pushing them using imagination or just random ideas.....isnt that creativity?...

instead of trying to copy what every one else is doing....why not try to think outside the box , to do something everyone says is difficult, something no one has thought of. It doesnt matter if at first no one understands what you are doing, but here we have many experienced photographers who actually DO understand and are willing to teach and guide PROVIDED that you show that their time and effort will not be wasted...( eg : Ier and albert ..to name a few...)

Secondly, read...ahahah.....only by opening your own mind can you truly be creative....smile.gif

by read i mean in general.... read about life, about countries about relations, politics, the world, current issues, about human nature, biology, architecture, love, war.....peace...animal rights.... basically ANYTHING! this will give u SO much raw material to mould into your shots.... when u know more and experience more, you will suddenly begin to see great subjects with deep meaning from everyday "mundane" objects..... suddenly things make sense...suddenly you realize what those pros mean with photos that you never really understood before....

THEN ... photography becomes a joy........

I dont know about others, but I feel I may have some problem in the creativity dept sad.gif

However, in learning to broaden and expand my photography skill, style, knowledge etc... I try to vary my shots. For example, if I were to shoot a flower, I at times ask myself "how can I capture the view of this flower differently from what I and others normally see it? ".

Meaning, usually I look at a flower from the top looking down (for example). So, I try to change the perspective (viewing angle) and take a shot from different angle... such as at same level to the petals, or viewing from below, etc. I try to find a different way of looking at a flower... However, Im still not good at this as Im still learning blush.gif

Similarly when shooting my cat or pet, rather than usually having the view looking from above and looking below towards the cat/pet (as we are taller than the pets)... I try to shoot at different angle such as shooting at eye level to the cat/pet, etc...

That's what Im trying to teach myself. Donno if that would help anyone though unsure.gif laugh.gif

See you there Seng_Kiat!

lugiamcg: Try to go for real photo exhibitions - The Annexe Gallery behind Central Market (if you're from KL) is a good start.

The photos there are 'deeper' than those you may see at camera fairs (where the pictures are just meant to be bright and colorful to attract buyers.)

A more philosophical photography-related blog is here:

Banzai_san same with me.. thought of how can my shoot 'today' be better than the thing i shoot 'yesterday'..
and usually i thought an idea when viewing all the pics taken on that day..

albnok i would like to meet you someday.. can? biggrin.gif

braindead_fr3ak laugh.gif nice sharing.. experimenting is nice.. but in 10 experiments 1-2 succeeds.. and sometimes really needs somebody advice as a learner..

nashakir : yep of course...as i said earlier...instead of opting for the "spoonfeed me please " mindset, it would be SO much better and more effective if you tryout your ideas, see your results, then ask for advice on specifics of the photo. Never will research and online teaching ever come close to real life situations.

1-2 successes in 10 experiments is a DAMN fine success if u ask me !...u have learnt 2 seperate things...and if u think about it a while, even TEN failures out of ten is still fine by me...because then you would have real experience regarding 10 ways of NOT to photograph things. Real experience always will better experienced gained from being taught.

However this is my opinion, I am fairly certain there are gifted individuals out there who can convert theory into real life with the ease of popping a candy bar.....however...it is most often NOT the case smile.gif
