 USB not recognize, HTC Hero problem

Just got my Hero yesterday and decided to root it but after i plug the usb on my computer its says USB not recognize..
so i then install HTC sync, i tot thats the problem..
unfortunately still USB not recognize..
do alot of googling las nit from 8pm to 3 am, didnt find the solution.
after i plug the usb, at my phone i can see sync icon, but not USB icon..
even after i click sync on my phone nothing happen at my computer.
still say usb not recognize.
anyone got workaround on this?

i use windows 7 ultimate. tried on my laptop using windows xp also not recognize.
most people on the net say only vista didnt have this problem.
xp and 7 sure got.

any help appreciated.

I'm on XP and didnt experience any problems. Usually if your USB device is not recognised, it's a driver problem.

till now still cant connect my hero to my computer..
try install PDAnet as some people said it work.
install PDAnet, and USB icon appear on my phone..
then i can mount my SD for the 1st time, even windows still say USB not recognize..
but then after i unplug n plug again, PDAnet also cant help..
still cant connect..
dunno where the mistake..

have you tick the usb debugging check-box?,

settings>applications>development>usb debugging

and you should install the latest htc sync to get the updated win7 x64 drivers

yes i tick it.
and htc sync newest version.
on HTC driver folder got win7_x86 but still it didnt detect it although i manully update the driver to point at the folder. system said i have the most up to date driver for the device but it still say usb not recognize..

you are using windows 7 x64 bit right? so you should use win7_x64 driver.
