40 Steps to Getting a PS3 Online, Wirelessly
Posted: 2006-11-27 12:59:10.28
40 steps to wireless online gaming nirvana on a 60GB PS3 with Wi-Fi...
1. Hooked up PS3 in media cabinet, plugged in HDMI cable...it worked first time! Hooray! Not sure why people have been b****ing that it doesn't. Perhaps because they hooked up using a different/inferior method first?
2. Having to plug the Sixaxis in to sync it up seems weird. But it works fine, so it's not that big of a deal.
3. Network settings...wireless network...shouldn't take long, right? I have a pretty standard wireless network set up (using an Apple AirPort Extreme) and my PSP has been working just fine for months.
4. This should take no time at all.
5. Scan for networks...there it is...click...oh. Now it wants the WEP key. That's a 26-digit string. That's kind of annoying. Not unexpected though, I guess. Now where do I find the WEP key again? (Pause for 15 minutes while I fumble through stuff before discovering you can click "Password" on the AirPort setup utility.)
6. Oh. Great. I have to punch it in using the T9 interface. I guess I could go find a USB keyboard from somewhere, but I'll just try and get through this one time.
7. Oh. Great. Every time I punch in a letter or number, it immediately turns into an asterisk so I can't see what I've done.
8. OK... Everything else should be set up automatically. Now all I need to do is test the connection.
9. "A connection error has occurred (8013013E)"
10. That's not very friendly. What the hell does 8013013E mean? Return to step 5.
11. "A connection error has occurred (8013013E)"
12. Um?
13. What does the manual say? Maybe there's something weird I need to do. If I don't do all the automatic set up, it lets me drill into hardcore settings, so maybe I need to set up something funky. OK...flick through pages...
14. Oh. "Follow the onscreen instructions." Umm...yes. That was kind of where the problem started.
15. Let's try Sony's online tech support. This must be a pretty common problem so I'm sure they have a forum, at least.
16. "We're working hard to improve our Support section. Check back soon to see our full selection of support topics and resources."
17. Not hard enough.
18. I have to think at this point, that a lot of people would just give up. Or call tech support, or do what I did...and just get really angry. This is a games console... isn't this stuff supposed to be easy? Why doesn't the exact same setup I have working on my PSP--a handheld--work on the PS3??!?
19. Type various combinations of the words "PlayStation 3", "wireless", "Airport", and "network" into Google until I stumble upon a message board thread about wireless security. I'm no networking expert, and have no desire to be. I just want it to work.
20. Change the security on the AirPort Extreme from WEP to WPA2 Personal and punch in a new password. Restart AirPort.
21. Router disappears from lists on every computer and device in the house, including laptops, desktop, PSP, and Xbox 360.
22. Router reappears, but all devices need new network setup. Won't do that until PS3 works.
23. Back to PS3 media bar...scan for networks...
24. No networks. What?
25. Reboot PS3. Scan for networks. Still no networks.
26. I really want to break something.
27. Scan for networks...There it is! Yes!
28. Punch in password...yes...yes...automatic everything else...test connection...wait...wait...screen turns to static.
29. What?
30. Reboot PS3. Repeat from step 26.
31. Very, very loud noise coming from media cabinet. What the hell is that?
32. Apparently it's the PS3 fan. It doesn't like enclosed spaces. Things are getting real hot in there.
33. Test connection...IP Address...Internet connection? Internet connection? Yes? No? Yes? No?
34. No.
35. Need to download firmware.
36. Downloading...downloading...downloading. Screen turns to static again. Huh?
37. When screen comes back, PS3 asks for Sixaxis to be plugged back in again for some reason.
38. Reboot PS3...and it's online! Yes!
39. Check clock.
40. 1 hour, 11 minutes. That includes incompetent (but what should be unnecessary) network engineering on my part.[/quote]
