Weird huh..

Hi,

At long last, my bd80's here.. not tat I m sufferin or anytin as de resident ps3 is goin great guns.. Anyway, on wif de shw..

Woke up early today to try n fix it up.. knowin how much of a klutz I am.. I wasnt too optimistic in gettin it to liase wif my system on de first try..
BUT voila..
Forced de pwr plug into a 2pin socket/adapter ;
Hdmi cbl into de player [tats easy] ;
And de other side to de avr [tis took sumtime cos of limited space in my custom built cabinets but wif a torch n a small mirror managed to hook it up to de existin tv inputs, which for my 7002 means de hdmi connexion overides de analog frm my tuner/vcr {I dont hv astro , u see}, but then again I wont be watchin both at once anyway..]

Jus remembered nid to reset de bd80 to region B to test my sole region B locked ttl [more comin.. but tats another story], Shaolin Soccer[SC] .. After all de beeps r done n hvng popped in de SC.. voila de warnin sign came up.. I got de 'Tis cp is frm a diff region' msg when I did tis to my PS3..
Tats it .. pwrd it down n had to leave for work

A bit on de physical side of d bdp80 :

Its pretty heavy for a player .. off hand I d say it weighs more than my other oppo, de 981hd.. gud sign tat..
Its black n pretty neat in design not unlike my 981 too exept de tray is in de ctr.
Trays pretty flimsy but I guess tats where de cost cuttin cums in..
It has a pretty nice menu setup similar to pioneers dvdp wif de 4 arrow keys n d ctr enter key which pretty much does everytin.. a usb port on de rite wif a cvr [ theres another at de back which I wont ever use..]
O ya.. I forgot, it has 2 remotes n de lited one is real cool.. 1st off its really bright, much brighter then my rc232 [courtesy of marantz] n as bright as my epson's.. ran out of aa batteries so had to cannaballise my torch to make it work.. funny ting is oppo supplied aaa sized batteries but I guess tats for de non lited one[ didnt bother chekin tat out yet..]

No la .. not tat patient.. more of a skinflint, not willin to pay for freight..kekeke but since I started tis thread, it does look tat way..
Oso like I said .. stil got de ps3 ..

Yup got de backlit remote together.. tot theyd remove de normal one but they packed both in de small black box.. together wif de detachable pwr cbls [gud for those who like to tinker wif tis - can jus switch n play, no mods needed]

At first I tot its auto settin for region , sumtin like de ol dvdp - where u jus plonk in a disc n then it'll play - no settin req'd.. but then when I opend de box.. there was tis very glarin n obtrusiv flyer tat states wat u nid to do to set region .. fortunately its not veri difficult but I m stil gonna leave tis on region B n use de ps3 for de region A disc duties.. epitome of lazines - yup, tats me..

I brought 2 units back home las nite.. d other found its owner who helpd bring it out.. d other unit wif me is meetin its owner tonite , when I pass it to my bro-in-law ..

Had another free hr to tinker wif de bd80 las nite..

Had a minor hiccup ystrday as bd80 remote works for my 981 too.. ON n both will go on together.. anyway found de way to recode so bd80 remote works for it only..

Out of d box .. wif factory settings .. de pic quality of de oppo is way way out .. at least for my setup.. popped a region free CONAIR n found de picture only slightly better than an upconverted SD.. it looked far better playin thru de ps3..
Read de manual n fiddled wif de vdo outputs.. source direct wif wide/auto settin.. lessee now, wat else did I chng.. yup I guess tats it.. N
Man wat a difference it makes.. thou' its not a veri big difference, it luks much better now.. n dare I say it .. tat its a tad sharper n smoother than wat cums out frm de ps3 on an A B test.. Of cos its not nite n day diff, but its got a more cleaner look , like u knw - tat its playin frm a newer unit kinda feel..
D settings apparently jus passes de signal strt thru to my epson n pj scaler will do de work - weird huh..

Will test more ttls ltr..

Found tat out d hard way - readin d manual..

Watched wif my kids both Toys Storys on sunday ..
TS 1 on de oppo ..

VDO settin was on 1080p/24 n Source Direct but aftr like 5mins into de mv, noticed flickerin mostly on cntral prt of de picture..
reset to NO for 1080p/24 but no go, stil flickered..
reset output to 1080i [pjs only up to tat] n stil no go - same predicament..
ended up wif 720p which finally solved tis flickerin prblm.. pity .. d picture does look a tad smoother wif source direct thou'.. but I guess my epson 700 scalar mus not be tat great aftr all..
Strange ting abt tis affair was wif de ps3, even on 1080i, I ddnt observe any flickerin n de ps3 wont allow 1080p out to de epson - anyway a long time ago I decided tat outputin 720p lukd better than 1080i..
Watchd de whole mv on 720p settin wif no prblms..


O well new eqpmnt prbbly hv new tech inside.. ya..

I hv Tinker Bell - 1st one[ theres a sequel now] n playd it on my ps3 sumtime bck[region a cp thou] n dont remember abt audio dropouts..

I tink..

Its a one off ting.. I had slight 'shimmers'[dunno how to explain] when fiddlin wif de vdo settings when I tried out Toy story [UK region free] too.. maybe its out of de box [for my peasant bd80] syndrome.. dont seem to see d shimmer when I tried it a few days later..

One ting I noticed is its less fussy than my ps3 when playin less than ideal discs[bdrw/slightly scrtchd]..
