The game takes place on Ruli Island (Lazulis Island in the English translation), governed by Count Arganan and located at the entrance of a harbor which serves as the only entrance to a mountainous continent. The player controls a group of mercenaries that have come from the desolate continent to the island seeking work. The production staff is trying to limit science fiction elements in the game.

The Island is named "Ruri Island". It is surrounded by mountain ranges and can only be accessed through a port. The ruler of the Island is unnamed, but has big ambitions and seeks magic so he/she can rise to power.

The Empire is poor and decayed but Ruri remains rich and well, likely due to the magic. The magic though, soon becomes a problem, as it starts attracting monsters. The fate of the Ruri Island is soon to be changed.

The world of The Last Story is one where metal resources are hard to come by, and the Sci-Fi influence on the game will be kept to a minimum. Finally, Sakaguchi wants players to be able to enjoy a smooth experience exploring Ruri Island.

According to the director of the game, Ruli Island will have changing reactions of passersby, things flying in the wind, and "desperate escapes."

He also wrote, "Prior to creating the city, we visited small towns in France and Italy. It was for research. Of course, it's a fantasy virtual world, so there's no need to make it match reality. However, by incorporating architectural designs that were made to support life over a long history, we will be able to build a convincing world." Ruli Island will be the base of operations for the game.

The producer, probably Sakaguchi, mentioned that Ruli Island will be different from towns in other RPGs in that Rulu Island will have a small amount of dead ends and wide roads to keep players from getting lost, but in this game it seems Ruli Island will huge, and presumably more akin to a real world town in that you can get lost easily.

"However, the city of The Last Story is expansive, and if you walk a good amount, you'll probably get lost. There are few dead ends, and a large number of narrow roadways."

"There's a reason for this type of setting. Please, walk around Ruli City aimlessly to experience that reason."

The director (still unidentified) confirms that the characters depicted in the illustration are the main character and heroine.

"There is a wall between the two," he writes. Based off the director's comments, it seems that there's something keeping the two apart and unable to live their dreams together.

The director also writes that in The Last Story, there will be a number of other stories besides the story of these two characters. He mentions:

* The fear of speaking your true feelings
* The mystery of the father who went missing on boat
* The difficulty a leader has in making decisions
* The close accomplice who's turned to evil
* The foolish archaeologist's prison break

Concludes the director, "It's very important to merge battles and gameplay with story. Neither can stand on its own. Once both are connected together, the characters will rise up as "human" within the container of a game."

The game's producer (also unidentified) states, "The characters who appear in The Last Story all walk their own paths and have their own stories." He likens this to the real world, where no one has lived their lives following the same path as you.

The main part of The Last Story's story will focus on the main character, says the producer. However, he believes players will also have a chance to be touched by the stories other characters as well. "Once you've been touched by that, it's likely that you'll be able to feel their [the characters outside of the main character] true feelings, which you did not see before."

owww~ i hope i can have a good romantic story in this game~

This week's Famitsu has the first ever full magazine preview of the Mistwalker Wii RPG, also you can get the first look at some juicy screenshots.

The magazine did a recap of the info that the official blog already disclosed and also added some new info:

- Ruli Island is a peninsula
- Scans show Count Arganon’s palace
- Ruli City base of operations for the main characters
- Canal in the center of the city, canal splits the city into north and south sections
- Battle system will be real time as previously mentioned

The two characters who seemed to be the game's hero and heroine are shown in the magazine, but their names were not revealed.

the scans: very big, lazy to resize:

UPDATE!

The hero is Elza. He's a mercenary who's come to Ruri Island and admires the knights, who have both rank and power.

The heroine is Kanan. The magazine says that she wears a white dress and seems to have a high class air about her.

The Last Story, Mistwalker's new Wii RPG, has been absent for a while, but it looks like new details will be coming in following Xenoblade's release last month.

The newest entry for the game is called "Companions." The new art shows multiple characters among the game's protagonists, Elza and Kanan. The characters shown appeared in previous scans of gameplay so it looks like they're the main cast of the game.

The director writes, "The feel and reverberation when you've played this game is probably the sense of 'companion.' After having seen everything through repeated test play, this is what always remains in the end." The diector also notes that there will be a connection with your companions in the game not just in the main story, but other areas as well.

There will be conversations going on with your party members during "intervals" in the real-time battles of the game. These conversations may even be tied in with the game's skill system. Party members will also engage in "trivial" conversations when you're on the move. The director finishes up by saying, "There exists drama even in battle."

The producer (speculated to be Hironobu Sakaguchi) says, "You'll hear conversations amongst your comrades in all sorts of situations. Apparently the characters talk a lot in this game, and not just during event scenes and typical conversations, but also during battles and on the move. These conversations will help show the characters' personalities and relationships, not to mention they'll make things more lively.

"Players are surrounded in their comrades' conversations," finishes the producer.  He also notes that there'll be instances when the player character is alone and that the lack of these conversations will help the player realize the warmth of being together with your companions.

There seem to be seven additional blog entries left to fill, so it might take a while to see some new media like a trailer. At the very least we should expect frequent updates for the time being.

Jump has first details this week on the first set of allies who will accompany main character Elza on his travels in The Last Story.

Three characters in Elza's mercenaries group are introduced in the magazine. The accompanying images were pulled from the recent trailer.

Quark

The mercenary leader. He met Elza in his youth and accompanies Elza as an older brother.

Seiren

The mercenary mood maker. She's got a foul mouth, but she's kind and considerate of her friends.

Yuris

He's the youngest of the mercenaries, but has great capabilities in battle. He's a magic user.

This new look at The Last Story hopefully means we can expect an online followup report from Nintendo shortly.

The magazine lists The Last Story as TBA 2010.
