Hi guys,

sorry for the crudeness, I am currently looking for private companies in Malaysia who employ fresh IT grads in forensic IT field.

At the moment, companies will hire a person if he/she has the certification (ie-CEH) and experience in a relating position in regards to security or forensics but little is known for freshies.

I'm asking here to help my juniors who will face a hard time getting a job in Forensic IT or Computer Forensics field, as many companies don't find the need to employ freshies with this sorta background

PDRM and Cybersecurity take a long time to respond, and often they have very few openings.
A negative side for joining PDRM, is that one has to undergo full army-like police training before being assigned to the Forensic IT lab job for the rest of his life... tongue.gif

If anyone knows a company that hires , can you let me know or post the company name and webpage here and i'll update the main page. Thanks in advance.

If anyone is wondering what forensic IT handles, It's a broad subject, but mostly is known for :

1. Data Recovery
2. Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
3. Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI)
4. Licensed Penetration Tester (LPT)
5. Malaysian Computer Emergency Response Team (MYCERT)
6. Fraud investigation in Banks and Firms
7. Most of the stuff you see on CSI using a computer.

Companies list
Heitech Padu
Cybersecurity
Polis Di Raja Malaysia Commercial Crime Unit
TecBizFrisman
Ibas data recovery
F-secure
Price Waterhouse Coopers
IRIS*

* = Software Security Programmers mostly to develop security functions and implement

I heard E&Y Singapore has IT security audit team, but not sure about E&Y Malaysia. I have no idea if they hire fresh.

I think PWC Malaysia got IT Forensic team. Just head on to their website to know more. Infact, they are hiring IT degree holders as well if I am not mistaken.

No Problem. Already PM-ed you.

Previously i had co-operate with Polis Di Raja Malaysia Commercial Crime Unit for my Project. Emm, how to say... they do have equipments.. but quite lack of technic and knowledge, that's why most of the time they will work with cybersecurity which founded by Colonel Hussein(ex-Army), a nice guy. smile.gif

May i know why your junior would like to join this such unique field?
Where and what is he/she graduated from? Mind to share?
Cause he maybe is my junior as well, haha.

I'm a student in this course previously. But after graduate i joined a company which the job scope mostly about mobile application programming and database query.

s.t.t.p, i wanna improve my security knowledge, what should i learn to make me have useful knowledge in security when joinning security department(other company) in future. What i've studied previously don't give much knowledge for realtime work use.

anyone from security field can give advice what u guyz normally do and what is important ?

learn some programming languages, IRIS is still hiring at the moment, they use mostly C# btw.

Also, the security field is very broad, you gotta specify what you intend to do in the future.

you need to know what programming languages are like.

Cause hackers are always steps ahead of security guys, and the only way we can catch up is to learn a bit of programming.

I'm from a forensic background and sometimes, you can't rely on tools as some tools may not work with certain programs, so when that happens and there is no patch online, then you gotta code some tools.

go and find your interest in the field first.
there's networking / firewall / penetration testing / hacking / etc and its seriously difficult to master all.
if you are into pen testing you can check out backtrack-linux.org

I dont think they will treat you like a Constable Trainee when you apply for PDRM..

If you have a Degree you can apply for Inspectors Post in PDRM..

I heard the physical will be less for Inspector Post.. But still you will have to learn physical fighting techniques and firearms training..

Hei...i was wondering who has the advantage: A Computer Science degree holder or someone with a degree in security (e.g. MSU's Computer Forensic Degree, MMU's Security Tech) ? Most would say that the Comp.Sci student would be the one because he has a stronger foundation in computing and then can go on to specialize in a field of security...any opinions? I am asking because I am in a dilemma choosing between these two...although I understand that certs such as CEH are the more important ones..btw, I am interested in penetration testing...anybody with advice in terms of self-studying and career options besides Cybersecurity and PDRM?

hi there,

sorry for the late reply.
Let me put it in a simple way to answer your questions,
A computer science grad learns how the computer works, the language used and how to make it efficient.
Kind of like an architect who designs and builds a house to make it sturdy, stable, problem free, and looking awesome.

A security guy will learn of ways in taking how to find loopholes, backdoors, and flaws in systems, and how to patch it up (which is an added +).
If you look at the security guys, he's more of a person who will try to break into a house unnoticed, or even expose flaws in the house design, (In an ethical way of course..)

As for your pen testing, getting into Cybersecurity is hard and really long in terms of getting a reply from them, and PDRM will take some time since you'd need to apply for inspector position (as you will be a Bsc Degree grad).

Both have lucrative salaries, but openings are limited, and Pen Testing is not famous in Malaysia yet (especially if you're a freshie, and unless you're like the top guys in HITB CTF competitions).
Its better for you to pick up some programming language now, and get used to it (Python is kinda awesome).

Good Pen Testers don't just rely on Nmap and Metasploit.
josh.
