I believe there are quite a number of forumers working in overseas as expatriate, be it long/short term. The purpose I create this thread is to get all of us connected as community. There should be a lot of things that can be shared/discussed among us, especially for those who will still be back to Malaysia for good one day. Below are some topics we may be interested in:

1) country & city that we are working at
2) lifestyle/cultural issues
3) job & career discussion
4) investment discussions, including property & stock market
5) currency exchange & inward/outward TT
6) income tax issues in host & home country
7) family commitment in Malaysia
8) relationship issues (long-distance or foreign)
9) travel options, i.e. flybacks, flights
10) anything...

As starter, I work in a project-based environment primarily within Greater China including HK with occassions to other countries.

Company sponsored expatriate on expat terms or self funded foreign worker on local terms?

Very different cares and concerns between the 2 ends.

yes, there should be more concerns for self-funded type as company-sponsored type will have many issues been taken care of.

still, there are lotz of commonalities, and most importantly is to get connected, right?

In my mind, they share very few things in common. Lifestyle, social circles, financial concerns, pastimes and interests are mostly different.

For instance the expat terms guy couldn't care less where ''the best'' ie. cheapest food, accomodation or entertainment is. The local terms guy will have no interest which serviced condo is the best or which airline has the best business class.

But anyway, good luck with this thread.
