Is it advisable to take German A-Level Preparatory Programme(GAPP) at GMI after SPM, so that one can proceed to Germany for a free tertiary education in Engineering?

Why is it that many r saying Engineers are not paid well n working long hours when the media kept publishing that there is abig shortage in Malaysia as in the article below?

A finding by The National Council for Scientific and Research Development in 2018 said Malaysia needs to have at least 500,000 scientists and engineers by next year to grapple with some of the challenges expected from the rapid disruptions confronting industries.

Yet, official data indicated there are only 70,000 registered engineers currently, just 17 per cent of the targeted amount.

In the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings, which scores a country’s performance in science, mathematics and reading, Malaysia failed to make the top 70 in all three fields.

Which year? Which stream, for UTM there are Electrical, Electronic and Mechatronic? How is the facility? What is the minimum cgpa to qualify?

UM theres only electrical. Im in 3rd year. Facility wise i think its fine
I got 4As for my Alevels.. 90% of my classmates got straight As in SPM and i think mostly got 4.0 in matrics. I dont really care about facility cause even if another uni facility is better, um is really hard to get into so our grads have quality

U got in via UPU or Direct-entry paying higher fees?

Hello there, since you're mentioning that you are specializing in communications, I would assume you are leaning more towards electronics especially RF stuffs. I would say your future are bright indeed if you willing to step down in Penang.

For RF communications, there are a few big MNCs that you can pursue such as Keysight and National instrument. These company are pioneer in creating and manufacturing electronic test and measurement equipment. They are the one that supply equipment that measure and characterize your devices with LTE or 5G. They are also the key players in 3GPP organization that defines 3G, 4G and 5G standards.

Besides RF if you are willing to branch out, you can learn more about field-programmable gate array (FPGA), VLSI, Verilog and stuff and you can pursue your career in IC design in maybe Intel, AMD, Western Digital, Micron, Nexperia etc..

Still not convincing enough? Learn more about computer machine vision in your uni and land yourself a career in Vitrox, Cortex robotics, Aemulus etc. They supply equipment to inspect IC or PCB end product. As the world electronic demand increasing every day, so does company that makes inspection system biggrin.gif

You like hardware design? You can approach Jabil or Plexus where they are the ODM of some audio product that u can see in the market and medical equipment.

There are even more big RF companies that I did not mention above. If your uni allows you to take elective subject in your 4th years (i.e. assuming you are in a 4 years course), proceed to take machine vision, and IC design related subject.

tldr: Future is bright smile.gif

Anyone who are clueless and not comfortable to discuss in the public can PM me as well.

If you want to be Jack of all trades in you future career, yes, mechanical engineering is very versatile. But if you intend to go specialized in certain field of mechanical engineering, let say being a pump supplier for a few years, you could hardly change to other fields. Unless you are willing to start from zero again., taking a fresh graduate salary package. However, you could be in your 30s at that with family and could not afford to change career path.

Where as for electrical, every factories need them, construction and oil and gas field needs them as well. The technical knowledge could be similar. Switching fields is much more easier compare with Mechanical.

Nice sharing, didnt think of that.

I think there is a oversupply of engineering graduates in malaysian market, if you are not super interested in this field i would suggest to reconsider.

Personally im also in this field and i can see many is suffering from the miserable remuneration packages.

On top of that with the covid pandemic we dont know how long it will prolong learning from home, and engineering definately needs lab learning. Would employers employs such an engineering graduate with little lab experience?
