Already made my call to CS this morning, will be contacted by their technical person within 4 hours, I'll try my best to persuade them to reinstate the "stretch" feature in TV setting. Just put them back along with "Zoom" and "Pillar box", give us the freedom to choose.

I hate that now I have to change the zoom setting everytime when switching from HD to SD channel vice versa.

And dont tell me to live with large black box either side of my screen, better throw your large 16:9 tv and get that old crt if you want to do so.

ASTRO - please revert to old software WHILE you fix this boo boo. This is not why we are paying you extra every month!

CARE/008460/10
Dear Mr XYZ,

We refer to your e-mail with regard to Astro B.yond.

Thank you for highlighting your concern to us. Rest assured that we have conveyed your feedback to the department in charge for their attention and consideration.

We wish to take this opportunity to clarify that Astro B.yond has recently introduced the aspect ratio switch as part of a process change to enhance customers’ viewing experience on high definition television. Today, all flat panel/high definition televisions and HD content is transmitted on 16:9 aspect ratio which offers full screen viewing. On the other hand, SD channels are still broadcasted on 4:3 aspect ratio. This means that the standard definition channels images viewed on a flat panel television/high definition television will be pillar-boxed.  Some customers may stretch the 4:3 aspect ratio images to fill up the screen but this may distort the images.

To ensure that customers have the best possible viewing experience of standard definition channels on High Definition TV and Astro B.yond, all images broadcasted will be in the correct native ratio for SD channels and HD channels respectively. We regret any inconvenience caused.

Should you have any other enquiries, kindly contact our Contact Centre at 1300-82-3838 which is operational from 8.00 am to 12.00 midnight daily or email to wecare@astro.com.my.

We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you.

Yours sincerely,

This is the reply Astro gave through their FB page. Looks like we have to make do with that stooooopid decision of theirs, at least for a while more.

I managed to see this in the FB !!!

Just to remind everyone - Astro HAD that feature - they dont need to rewrite or work with whoever to get that feature back -

if I were in their shoes, rather than talking crap - I would just revert to the working firmware !

How difficult is that?

ASTRO - any comments? or should MCMC come into the picture?

Found it - Posted on FaceBook

Thank you ASTRO

Recently, Astro performed a software update download to deliver a consistent viewing experience for different aspect ratios. This is designed in conjunction with Astro’s software partners and is in accordance with international broadcast and content standards. For High-Definition content, the new software displays the image in its wide-screen format; for standard definition content, the image displays in pillar box mode (with two black bars at the sides) to retain its original proportion and resolution for optimum picture quality.

Following customers' feedback after the software update download, we hear your preference and are working with our software partners to provide feasible viewing options. By the end of this week, we will replace the “Zoom” option with the “Fit to Screen” option for our customers who prefer to view Standard Definition content in full screen. To do this, customers can press the aspect ratio button on their Astro B.yond remote control. However, for the correct proportions and best resolution, Astro recommends that Standard Definition content be viewed via the pillar box mode.

Astro regrets any inconvenience caused as it strives to improve its customer experience. Astro thanks its loyal customers for their continued feedback.
