Hi guys!:D

I'm looking for a VHS player, but no luck. I know that they are not officially selling it anymore but I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy one from? Second hand most probably.

We have many home videos and I don't want it to go to waste. I have recently taken it to a photo shop for conversion, the charge for 9 tapes is almost RM800! Anyway, they told me all the tapes were empty which is strange because they are 2hrs full each. I have seen them before. So, I'd like to get a player to see it again for myself, and conversion is so expensive. I want to do it myself with Easycap video capture.

Anyway, yeah, that's the reason why I need a VHS player. Please if anyone knows where to get one, please help me! Thanks! smile.gif

[Sorry if this is the wrong section for this topic, I don't know where else to post.]

If you are in Penang, there is a shop, along Jalan Paya Terubong, same row as the famous Char Siew Fun, that repairs old VHS players, CRTs and other AV equipments.
You can take at look there.

I'm not in Penang, I'm in KL. Thanks anyway. biggrin.gif

perhaps you can look for a VHS + DVD recorder combo deck, you can directly convert your tapes to DVD format. not very high quality (depends on your tapes of course, but at least the format is viable, and longer lasting than tapes.

My mom uses Sharp brand for her VHS tapes...most of it are imported stuff from US...yeah..ballroom dancing tapes

You can still get a VHS player if you go hunting and asking around...if you are in JB I can tell you where to buy them.

Take note, yes, we all know thing like VHS are suppose to be standardize, but tapes that are more than 10 years are difficult to play, but for newer tapes, it will look good. Maybe thats why that shop fellow said your tapes are empty

Also, if you VHS tape is moldy, its best to clean it up first with a VHS tape cleaner.
*
The tapes I have are 20 years old! unsure.gif Is it damaged? The guy at the shop was furious when he saw it was empty. But it's not, I've watched it a dozen times before, and it's not moldy too. There are some which are moldy, and he rejected it. How do I clean it? I hope I can still save my precious tapes. sad.gif

It shouldn't be empty unless you miss recorded it, I hope you break off the tab to prevent this from happening.
My mom did tell me, for newer models of VHS, has compatibility issue to VHS tapes that are more than 10 years old...dunno why, suppose to be standard stuff.
Probably the head tracking is not the same.

For VHS tape cleaning, just go to those electronic shop..maybe they still have them, its like a shoe box where you put some alcohol and tape in (go easy on the alcohol!)
Oh really? How would I know which VHS player will play the tapes I have? The last VHS player I bought was in back in 2000/01 I think. I think it was JVC. I could play the tapes on that one. I can't remember the model though.

Thanks for helping. smile.gif

Hi guys, I need your opinion on this. I found an ad on mudah.com. I don't know if this is a good VHS player, and how about the price? Is it reasonable?

Here's the link to the ad: http://www.mudah.my/vi/5120686.htm

Hmmm, multi system is always good, never know if you'll want to pop in that collector's edition Titanic tape...

But it's mono only. If your tapes aren't recorded on a stereo VCR, it's good enough and you're not missing anything. Just remember to use a RCA Y-cable for audio when connecting the player to your video capture card. For good effect tho, I'd recommend searching for one that has HiFi playback as well as world multi support.

Edit:

This one looks pretty good. Ask around to see if any Sharp authorized distributor can still get one for you. Iirc this is the last model of VCR available from Sharp in Malaysia.
*
What's wrong with Mono? Aren't all VHS players the same? I mean it's possible to transfer the video using easy-cap to my pc right? Should I not get the player? I've already made a deal with the guy. He's willing to sell it for RM160. I really don't get this stuff. rclxub.gif Can you please explain what is a RCA Y Cable? and why it'd be better if I got a HiFi playback?
I was told that any VHS players can work with the easy-cap capture card? Is that true?
Thanks. blush.gif

There is nothing wrong with Mono. Just that if you're planning to convert Hi-Fi stereo video tapes (if the videos you have are in HiFi stereo), the conversion will have mono sound. Apart from that, no difference. As for Y cable, it's a cable with one RCA connector on one end that splits into two RCA connector on the other end. Looks like this:
user posted image

Here's the thing: Mono VCRs only have one audio out connector. I'm assuming the easy-cap has two audio in connectors (L/R for stereo).

I'll try to put this in layman's terms. Mono VCRs will only store one audio track for sound. Stereo VCRs will store a mono audio track for backward compatibility with mono VCRs and a pair of encoded audio tracks for stereo sound (left and right audio tracks). The stereo sound is stored such that it's only accessible on stereo VCRs, while mono VCRs will play the mono audio track and ignore the stereo audio tracks. A stereo VCR playing back a mono tape will scan the tape for the encoded stereo tracks and fall back to the mono track if none is detected.

I'm not sure how the Easy-Cap capture works, but to be safe it's better to populate both audio connectors than to just connect one and then wonder why only left or right speaker on TV has sound once the conversion is done. This cable will connect the only mono audio out connector on the VCR to both the L/R audio in connector on the easy-cap device so both L and R will receive sound. For video just connect a straight one-to-one RCA cable from the VCR's video out to the Easy-Cap's video in.

Thank you for explaining all that. I got it now. biggrin.gif

I found another VHS player on ebay. Can you tell me if it's ok?

I wanted to ask you guys something. Before I buy the easy-cap capture device, I wanted to know if it's compatible with Windows XP Service pack 3?

Try doing a WTB in the garage sale or Mudah.my, lelong or something like that.

Buying these stuff its best to test it out first then only pay money.
*
Yeah that's only if I can get the item else where and not online. I tried looking in many places, asking around.
Ill try to create a WTB thread in the garage sale section. Thanks.

QUOTE(sKyWiR3pT3lTd @ Feb 5 2010, 07:48 AM)
Of course , do not pay to anyone before you confirm the item really exist..mudah users easily scammed..
*
Yes, so I've heard. It's not easy to trust anyone online. unsure.gif
