I am not sure which forum should I post this. Mod pls move this thread accordingly.

I notice hotels in Malaysia do not offer complimentarty Internet access in room, even 5-star hotels don't provide that. hmm.gif
It really gives not so nice impression to foreigners come to stay here.

You guys know the reason???

cheers,,,,

There are lotsa Hotels now providing free internet services including 5 stars..Those ho don't provide really Stupid or those who charge hefty sum (Well lotsa 5 Stars did that too) are losing their competitiveness

By now, I think lotsa budget & below 3 stars rate hotels provinding free internet services..Infact most Hostel & backpacker Inns provifing free... Too bad there4 are still lotsa 3 stars & higher still charging crazy sum to access theirs...

Those 3 stars & above that I stayed b4 wth FREE internet services to the room are:

1) Andaman Resort Langkawi (WIFI)
2) Notham All Suite Penang (LAN cable - Free only on recent year)

probably more...One particlular group still charging - Swiss garden Resorts mad.gif

So far most of the budget hotels i stayed having free internet services.. smile.gif

yea its a shame to 5 star or 4 star hotel that charge their customer, or dont even have wifi while budget hotels has

maybe budget hotel smaller, so easier and no need so many router or so? hmm....

oh ya, summit hotel at USJ got internet access also, but charge, quite mahal too...

and sunway pyramid tower macam langsung tarak when i stay there 2 years ago.

lotsa 5 star hotel at BB got internet access in room or lobby and even at swimming pool area.

the charge for 24hours is no less than RM45 and no more than RM50.
For hourly charge usually RM15-20 1 hour, 3 hour around RM30 like that.

well it depends on which hotel u staying and there are some hotel that give complimentarty Internet access but it depends on package u r choosing.

I was at Penang Traders Hotel last month and they had FREE in-room wired broadband connection for internet usage.

It is totally free (complimentary with room rental). It is not super fast but it is sufficient for checking emails and browsing.

That's the reason I booked that hotel in the first place.

I checked Westin, Sheraton Imperial and Le Meridien (deluxe). Guest room Internet Access is chargeable. The room rate is about 300-400 (westin most expensive!!!) per night AND still no FREE Internet.
Sad.

In the end wifi will be a standard criteria and hotels that don't comply will loose customers. I for one will not book at any hotel without proper inet. Hotels that charge focus on short term income, which is stupid imo. When I moved to Malaysia I got free inet from Grand Millenium smile.gif, but that lasted only two weeks lol...

Well, as TS, said the idea of earning xtra from tourist will lost our M'sian competitive edge when lotsa hotels in less developed countries also offering free internet services...for eg in Siem Riep - No problem getting FOC internet ..In hanoi, a 3 star hotel..Free Wifi wth 4mbps connection...super clear skype connection!..& in Taipei recently...10mbps free connection at a HOSTEL only.

I've travelled in many places in mainland Europe, the 4* hotels eg. Eden, Mercure generally don't have free internet while the cheaper hotels and B&B will have internet. The US tends to be the same, expensive Hiltons with no free wifi while the YMCA has free wifi.

I'm guessing that most of these four star and better hotels target business customers who have the deep pockets of the corporations to pay for internet access while smaller hotels target people paying with their own money.

I would argue however that a lot of tourist info on Malaysia is still available from the typical RM70 guide book, not from the internet. We still don't have a good equivalent of yelp (although LYN comes close biggrin.gif )

Well, I think that's the trend right now...4-5 stars hotels around the world charging for Internet usage unless comes wth package or luxury suite...and those budget hotels & certain 3 stars &below giving free access....
