if budget is not a constrain, then the f1.4 is of coz good, but if it is, then the 1.7 or 1.8 is good enough. F42 is also a good add-on

f58?i am using a330 add f58 will be extreamingly bulky...a330 poor grip..haiz

he is from Miri, used to own several lenses, but sold ALL of them, leavig only 1870 and his beloved A300. look at the photo he shoot. (he sold his flash too i think)

if u dont shoot group photo..i guess u can survive with 50 1.4 without flash..

my way of learning was i tried to shoot with the light available b4 i move on the learn about flash techniques....if possible..normally i'd try not to flash all the time..

agree with u achew...natural light would give more dramatic feeling compare to flash light....

If you want to buy a flash for your a330 only... then the F42 would be a better choice IMHO.
But if you have some plan for the future and possibly future body upgrade, I suggest get the F58 aka "cobra"
