before i start :

1)i wanna know if i wanna apply a coat of primer, do i need to sand the old paint before i paint the primer ?
2)if need to sand off, wat grit should i use ? 280 ? 400 ? 600 ? currently i only got 280 grit. ( the shop didnt got stock for 400 and 600 sad.gif )
3)refer to above pic, how do i recognize if the can he give me is primer or not ? cuz the label of primer (grey 1 on pic) and the metalic black (black 1 on right) are same, both labelled spray paint and i didnt saw any "primer" word on the grey can sad.gif so i wonder if the staff give me the right thing ?

i hope sifu-sifu here can give me some guide cuz i dun want to screws things up sad.gif

so its glossy...
ok glossy type might take longer time to dry...
so patient is the key word...

sanding is up to u....harder u get tired quickly....
lightly u'll take long time to finish...
tips: take a matchbox size thing, cut the sandpaper length size to the matchbox and rap it around the box...its easier to do the sanding....

the primer just 1 thin layer...enough...
its glossy paint so i think 2 layer would be enough...
first layer just to cover all surface...can see the primer also no problem...
try spraying 1 way, 1 time per line....
second layer to bring up the glossy of the paint....
make sure each layer is dry enough to do another layer....

try on another surface first if u not sure...trial n error...

1 layer of primer enough ? i saw other painting guide said that after primer is up, sand a bit, repeat the step few time to get smooth surface, after that apply few layer of paint to get shiny surface...

i buy at hardware shop RM5 per can, when buy at super market, RM 7.90 per can, same brand "Anchor".

the most expensive 1 are Flourescent color, 1 can = RM10, i buy 3 total RM30 shakehead.gif bankrap lo ....

FYI, metallic color = RM5.50, flat color = RM5.00, biggrin.gif

edit : about the darkness of the paint, depend on the angle u see it, some angle more darker, some angle more lighter. tongue.gif

examples
http://www.mashie.org/index.html
and
http://www.mashie.org/casemods/asteroid1.html

well it's actually paper mache
smooth or not, depends on how u do it

this is just an idea though haha..if u hav a lot of time that is =P
there was a guy that did this and won in some pc competition, i forgot where is the webbie already >< sorry

Paper Mache Recipes:
Use one of these 3 Paper Mache Recipes:

Recipe 1/ Ingredients: Flour,water,paper
Stir three parts water into one part flour until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
To make the paste last longer, add a few drops of oil of Wintergreen. (optional) You can buy this oil at a drugstore.
Stir well and the paste is ready to use.
Now you need paper- newspaper works well!
Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes.

Recipe 2/ Ingredients: Wallpaper paste,water,paper
Buy some wallpaper paste at a hardware store.
Mix one part wallpaper paste with three parts water.
Stir well and the paste is ready to use.
Now you need paper- newspaper works well!
Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes.

Recipe 3/ Ingredients: Glue,water,paper
Mix two parts white glue with one part warm water.
Stir well and the Paste is ready to use.
Now you need paper-newspaper works well!
Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes.

toilet paper is better..
i've tried tissue...LOL..not advisable
u can try though hahaha..
actually the newspaper of course would make it dirty but that doesn't matter, u only want the mould/shape..after that can paint or spray or anything..
toilet paper/tissue would slightly be black or yellow...well it turns out differently when i do it compared to when my sister does it haha

just hobby only
years back when i was studying that is..
as u know this stuff creates some kind of pattern when it's dried, i applied it on most of my book covers then paint it + wrap it with plastic wrapper
the effect is nice ^^ looks like dried earth cracks haha..
other artwork for example, well it's like playing with plasticine, only thing is it'll get dried and stay that way haha...
can make models such as animals, fruits, anything depending on ur imagination..

well, for computer wise, u can apply this on the casing panels..front, side, back, top..just need a lot of materials and time and creative ideas hahahaha

800 grit to sand off old paint ? need to sand off all the paint or... ?

white color paint as primer ? then wat is the difference between primer and normal paint ?

sry for a lot of question sweat.gif  and thx for the reply  notworthy.gif

do not sand off stock paint on ur casing completely. sand on the surface only. this way u, dont need any primier as ure using the stock paint as primier.

errr i guess im too late tongue.gif

haha, u are really late, cuz im strip off all the original paint using paint stripper tongue.gif and the new paint already on their place, sit nicely tongue.gif

Bro reiben, tell me whether i need to sand my clear coat before polish, or juz straight away polish, is there any different between this 2 method? notworthy.gif

Cannn... u may try it & ull see, this method is realy works. biggrin.gif.
Primier is an agent between metal & paint, as paint will not stick on metal but primier will. it work like this, paint will stick to primier & primier to base (metal). even powder coated, new paint can stick to it nicely. Usually stock paint will bond to metal better than spraying a primier to it smile.gif.

so far... the most problem in painting tt i can see here is the primier did not stick to the paint. mayb, due to oil, dust etc on the surface of the metal be4 painting or mayb bcoz of the primier itself smile.gif

i second that too.. btw i thought primer is a special material used so that paint will stick.. and paint alone is another different material..
some guy from other forum told me spraying primer and paint.. and paint (acting as primer) with paint is two different thing and the primer one will be more resistant D:

tongue.gif.. hard to explained tongue.gif. The primier is already on the base. Since u already sand off the stock paint on the surface, u may proceed with ur own color of paint smile.gif (spraying paint on paint as u mention above is like spraying a layer of paint smile.gif)

juz bare hands. i use 2000 grid sand paper on a sponge, water & bathing soap. never ever apply presure while sanding. (please keep in mind, ure sanding just the surface). sanding just to make the surface flat. after sanding, wash it well & u'll have a very dull result. nothing to worried about polish will fix it smile.gif.

errr what is swirl remover?? tongue.gif

lol, swirl remover is a compound to remove swirl. i try polish on a unwanted panel, but when observe closely, there are some tiny swirl on the surface... sad.gif , how much pressure when polishing? polish until the compound dry out on surface?

No presure at all (tt why i use sponge to avoid any accidentally pressure tongue.gif + i do the sanding job in a bathroom while bathing with shower is on tongue.gif), if u affraid to sand, use a higher number of grid. then, polish till it rise & shine ;P
