I think you better wait for 2010 models that support HDMI 1.4 otherwise you may need to upgrade again when you ungrade to 3D-ready TV or/and players. laugh.gif

I would suggest auditioning a Marantz or a Denon.... The Denon better at that. However, u need to get either the 4310 or the 4810 and it might be above ur budget.

Onkyo not too bad as well but I believe more suited for movies. However, if u can demo them with ur speakers as I think it will match.

Looking at the Mezzo specs, u need to get one that has a higher power rating. The Onkyo 876 shd be not too bad for that but it is an older model. The new 3007 would not enuf juice to drive the speakers efficiently.

unfortunately my plasma tv doesnt support 3D, so i think HDMI 1.4 doesnt really matter to me for sometime...
I audit denon 2310 with mezzo series, feel abit lack... Do you think 3310 will able to drive this mezzo speaker?

Mind to share why you think mezzo is hard to drive and need higher power rating amp.?

How much power you think is require to drive this speaker?  sad.gif

A proper power amp (100W per channel) shd have no problems driving the Mezzo, however the AVRs are not really power monsters although the ratings show that. I don't think it is hard to drive, the better word would be drive more efficiently. I believe the Mezzo 6 is 89dB, 4-8ohms. I would imagine ~ 6ohms. Driving that thru an AVR efficiently is ok if the amp on the AVR is > 140W per channel (as this would mean it can do 100W decently). The 3310 I'm not sure of the power ratings...

When u drive the speakers more efficiently, the sound is less strained at lower volumes and better dynamic range. Listening at higher volumes usually means putting urself for a chance at fatigue..This all applies more for music. Same can apply for movies, but typical HT folks like it loud and sometimes there is distortion.

hi shenton, nice to know u r using mezzos too... so 3310 is out from my list then... need to increase my budget i guess..
these day is hard to tell those AVR official power rated can be trusted, i think among all, onkyo has their avr very high power rated, do u think it really hv such punch? sad.gif

i was thinking pre/pro too but cost too much la...  tongue.gif

so back to reality, if i increase budget to around RM7000, then can get onkyo1007 (rated @135W/ch) or denon4310 (rated @130W/ch) already right? or any gd marantz amp..  So which one you think is more suitable?

I use the Onkyos. They do have quite a bit of power...They can drive the speakers, however, a dedicated power amp for these kinds of speakers yields better results. Also in ur case, the Mezzo 5 is also 4-8ohms @ 89dB. Now with 3 speakers in the systems with this kinds of efficiency, it will be difficult for an AVR to bring the best out of them. However, I would suggest, trying out with the AVR u choose and listen to some tracks.

I cannot recommend either. IMHO the 1007 is currently overpriced and underspec'ed compared to the 876 the year before. The only additions are the network capability and the DSX. It also does not have the Reon processor. The correct replacement for the 876 is the 3007 and I believe it is also overpriced. The Denons, I have heard briefly, sounds not too bad, I like tht they have a selection of Audyssey Flat for music. However, I have not spent enuf time with it to comment, and I believe they are also not cheap.

Just for the record, I use a dedicated power amp for my fronts, but my priority is music.

Also another point, I have not actually heard the Mezzo in action before. I am basing this on the specs only. So I might be totally wrong!

again, thanks alot for all the comments. in fact those comments r helpful to newbie like me tongue.gif and definitely i will take your advice of audition those amp. i selected before i decide.

yeah, i feel 1007 is over price too, and the video processing is using faroudja which is quite old tech. compare to other new rival.

probably is good to get the older model like onkyo 876 or 906 huh?

btw. if i hv this avr to hook up to my 5.1, then how to get power amp. for the front only? will i need to switch cable or something when i listen to stereo or movie? sorry about the stupid questions tongue.gif
*
Most of the AVRs will have pre-outs for all channels, all u need to do is pre-out the fronts and hook it up to a power amp.

Actually Faroudja is pretty good, its just that the Reon and the ABTs are better.

Try all the AVRs with the speakers u plan to get, they will sound different.

moderator freeze my post, thot i m spam pula.. vmad.gif anyway, lets continue....

after reading n suggestions from sifuss... i am considering to put up a dedicated power amp. for my front (for music), and a "normal" avr for the surround, sub etc... (similar like anfieldude mentioned before)

so my questions are:

1. what brand or model is the reasonable value for money power amp with min. 100W/ch which can intergrated into my home theater system? (how much $ i need to est. to get a decent one to drive mezzo6 efficiently?)

2. what brand or model is the reasonable for the AVR for power the surround system?

thanks for the comments! blush.gif

Ok..

Heres my 2 cts ..

Marantz 7002 - no vdo upsaclin thou' - pros are its pretty musical as avrs go..

I partner tat wif a Rotel rb985 pwr amp [5 x 100wts] n it works my Tannoy lcr + svs sbs 01 surr in my 7.2 setup..

I guess wat u ll get is a myriad opinions who will vouch for one model tat they are usin.. I figure if u r gettin a pwr amp then its jus how much u r willin to spend for pre/pro function of ur avr - unfortunately de more hi end it is , the better the internals ( thou u might not need de xtra watts tat it brings)..
Bottom line prbbly is wat u urself feel is gud n so far all models listed are decent gear n u cant much go wrong wif any of them..

Cheers

my recommendation, if u have a dedicated audio amp, then go for onkyo for yr home theatre then

if u are only using 5.1 speaker set up the txnr807 is good enough, this can drive up to 7.1 setup. In spore, u can get the txnr807 for a song!!!

good luck.
