Cambridge SoundWorks (Creative) Megaworks 550

i got this speaker from forumer as slightly spoilt set. popping and crackling every few seconds but everything else is fine. finally managed to repair it with the help of other forumer. turns out the glue has corroded and short some components. remove the glue and repair broken PCB track, everything is as good as new. this is the fault of Creative of spamming the glue everywhere including at the bottom of the PCB.

first board on top (with 2 black heatsink and coils) is the switching power supply. the middle one is the BASH amplifier, also with 2 black heatsink.

I work for ceramic cap, but electrolytic i'm not sure.

Spamming glue on PCB tracks or conductive places are risky, might get short circuit same like soldering flux which i experienced before, unless you are very sure that glue is purely non conductive even on sensitive device.

yeah well they spam it everywhere on their megaworks - gigaworks model, especially the one with 8" sub. the glue become corrosive and short-circuit the parts in the PCB. together with very hot amp many megaworks and gigaworks died very quickly. i now used 2x 80mm 12V fan to blow the backplate, still, when i put my finger into the subwoofer port i can still feel the warmth.

Really have no idea why people put so much glue everywhere. The only reason i can think of is to prevent the movement of their components as those speakers travel far in shipping.

Guy I totally agree with you. We should be getting what we pay for and not some cheap or non existing tweeter or spec. I don't mind low quality products, just make sure the price is also very low. SG should be black listed when they charge premium when they only give sub standard product!!!!! (its like a con job guys!)

That said I just wanted to say I purchase this Creative I-Trigue 2300 (was a display set) for just only RM100.00 the other day. I took it apart the other day just to see what was inside (before I saw this tread so sorry no picts) and was very happy that inside all four speakers were from Cambridge Soundworks. It even has serial numbers and all (sometimes u just have to love em Brits).

Sound wise, it doesn't have great bass (no woofer ma) but mids and highs are reproduce well. Sounds better than the RM100 I paid for it.

Just though I share (maybe the next time I take it apart I will post the internal picts) .

well. blu-tack-ed 2x 12V 80mm PC fan to the back of subwoofer. brings down alot of heat, but still a bit warm to touch even though both fan already running at full speed. (my 3 other 2.1 PC speakers only need 1fan at half speed)

good stuffs by cambridge soundworks. i also happen to dismantle a Creative Inspire 2400 which is made by CSW. good workmanship. subwoofer cable is quite thick, even thicker than my M3300. no offense but it's true.

EDIT: just realized i think i got some busted caps over there... well it probably explains why i got blown subwoofer. either the driver voicecoil is blown or the capacitors also gone bad.

my opinion is because of the vibration this loose components causes when sound is produced out/from within the speaker
it'll become abnormal noise and its annoying, you wont enjoy your music
but there might be other purpose, although electrical components usually they will use hotmelt

Yes I agree. The amount of vibration inside a sub-woofer is great therefor if all the components are not secure, soon they will become loose.
