yeah, i kindda agree wit u but its rafa the one who monitoring his fitness level week in week out n u can never understand rafa when he making decision, but take nothing away from him, aquilani could start against arsenal, just could..
Fitness and strength are mutually exclusive to a large degree. It's been awhile since he's returned from injury and been in training so I doubt it has anything to do with his fitness level.

Agree 100%
The English game is never not physical in any ways...I remember Luis Garcia saying he got grounded by a whack from Rio Ferdinand from his 1st game with Man U, and Rio just told him "Welcome to the EPL"

Well that's the thing. Fernando Torres is a slight lad and gets kicked about every game. Heck if Drogba who I'm convinced has a low threshold for pain can take the beating, why can't our Italian Stallion?

I guess the reason we didn't play him is because Lucas is better than he is XD frankly i don't blame rafa for not starting him. While he may not be a pansy, but neither is he as defensively oriented as Lucas and Masch. And you need to be defensive in the midfield against the likes of Fellaini, Cahill, Arteta. Unfortunately, his best position is already occupied by none other than Captain Marvel himself.
The thing that irks me about our approach to games this season is in fact our constant use of two defensive midfielders, especially at home or against inferior opposition like Portsmouth. Why are we not setting out to pummel the opposition especially when we are at home? Arteta orchestrates their midfield but after just having returned to the game after 11 months, he clearly wasn't his usual self. In fact he may not have been used at all if unibrow didn't go off injured.
Having said all that, it's sad to know that there are people who feel we should be defensive at home against average competition.

1. I'd prefer to lay the blame on Lucas for Kyrgiakos's red card. He miscontrolled the pass from the Greek and then subsequently put the Greek in trouble. Agree that the Greek shouldn't put two foot to challenge the afro-tw@t but had Lucas be more alert & have better ball control the sent off could've been avoided. Mind you this is not his first time miscontrolling a ball, happened a few times before but he got lucky. A big question mark too why Rafa prefer Lucas against Aquilani.
I'd hate to think it's because the Italian's crap as well.

2. I'm quite surprised some of our fans calling Ngog with bad names. Well his name might not be a handsome one but I believe he's been treated unjustly here. Frankly he did have a few good chances on Saturday and against Bolton he should've scored a couple. But mind you again that he was literally up on his own, chasing the entire opposition defence, has better first touch, ball control and can hold the ball way better than Babel. When Ngog was subbed I expected Babel to show what he's got but sadly nothing works for him anymore. Poor control, a bit lazy to chase the ball and I felt like we're playing with 9 men. This isn't the same Babel I saw 1-2 years ago. Maybe it's better to ship him off asap while he's still got some value left.
It is always more difficult for lone strikers to stand out, simply because when you are leading the line on your own, you will be closed down quickly and unless you have support, you will always be crowded out. You almost have to do all the dirty work up front, waiting for your mates to back you up. In most instances, lone strikers need to have it all, pace, strength and good ball control, something Torres has which is why he gets the goals he does even when he's alone. Can anyone think of another lone forward to gets as many goals as Torres?

i think its not due to the physicality solely....aqua is a man that requires a lil space n time with the ball to be effective, not that he's not able to play without them, but without space and time on the ball, he will be reduced to just another player....
The same was said of Xabi Alonso, that he took too much time on the ball and yet we used him extensively last season. If Aquaman is indeed slow, there's no better way to inspire him to think a little quicker than by throwing him into the thick of action, hoping he'll get kicked about a little

Premiership games are generally played at a quicker pace and if Aquaman is laggard, why the heck did we buy him anyway?
QUOTE(ezikie1 @ Feb 8 2010, 09:54 PM)
a derby will be played at a high tempo, so much so it kinda killed the smooth passing football and reduced it to a scrappy physical battle to win the ball, hence lucas & masch....but against other teams that allows a lil more time and space, that's where aqua can be at his best....with his vision and passing
I don't know much about Aquaman but from what little I've seen on youtube, he doesn't have much passing range and distribution isn't his forte. Rather, he appears to be the sort of player that can unlock defences by playing quick one-twos and bamboozling defenders with his deft touches rather than the type who sits back, orchestrating play from deep, which is why I'm surprised by comments indicating that he needs a lot of time on the ball. If you look at the following links, he appears to be to sort of guy who can instinctively pick out a teammate honing down on goal, and he has a good shot from 20-25 yards.
