Hi guys, just got a 97 B14 Nissan Sentra.

What kind of gear box oil, engine oil(Semi-Synthetic) and coolant (also water to coolant ratio) should I be looking at

Thanks for any advise!
*
dude i was just about to ask the same stuff haha! am going to be an owner of a 97 B14 Sentra soon, I'm a student and it's my 1st car so I wana know as much as possible about persevering the goodness of the B14 biggrin.gif

would be driving 80% city-stuck-in-jam speeds (even on highway ie federal) and 20% speeding on highway if late from class cuz i ferry between my uni in Setapak, gf uni in Subang and her place near digital mall PJ..

just got back from test drive today, the car is a lil heavy in the sense that the acceleration not very power doh.gif (compared to Waja cuz I usually drive parent's waja at home), is that normal? maybe cuz Waja body is lighter.. anyways it feels almost like the Waja I drive at home, any suggestions on what are the things that I should be looking out for like what are the things that will fail first (ie for proton waja the accesories, autowindow will fail..)? and for maintenance?

sorry if its abit too many questions, I dont expect direct answers n spoonfeeding, but a lead on what URL/guide/forum to refer to for more info on this would be great help d biggrin.gif Thank you so much sifus!

*EDIT: read that parts for b14 are not cheap sad.gif sigh. hope to preserve this car as long as possible

it depend how much oil u press.... when start moving i press around 1500rpm then increase to 2000rpm....so the fuel consumption is more effective.... I try before run 70KM the fuel indicator no dropping at all
my b14 can run around 350KM using RON95 (max can 400KM using RON 97) and still left one quarter tank (mainly town area).... but i havent test full tank can run how many KM la....
BTW, are u Auto or manual transmission?
*
am on Auto transmission..now I off the OD when I drive in jams/city, nothing above 80kmh. When traffic is clearer then I click it on again, seems to be okay la. I guess I drive the car a lot everyday lol, sunway then to setapak then back to sunway then back to pj.

"I work for nissan. Overdrive can be left on at all times where it gets the best gas mileage. By turning OD off light on shifts down to third gear which is good for stop and go around town where the highest gear is seldomly used. Also over gearing slows the motor speed resulting longer lasting engine."

Do a leak down test. Not many workshops do it. If they ask you what is it...means you have to find another mechanic.

Suspension noise, check all your bushings and suspension mount.

Check your wiring with regards to the meter.

Check your distributor for oil. If yes, see if you can find someone to change the oil seal. Then refer the guy to me  laugh.gif .

Change the gearbox oil to synthetic transmission oil (I know more expensive).

Change to 10-60 engine oil and use original/OEM oil filter fake ones are known to collapse (I know more expensive).

Change brake fluid and check brake lines/ disc/ drum. check brake pads. break in the pads gently if you do change them.

Change all the coolant hoses( theres a few behind the intake manifold and engine block) Change radiator fluid remember to add long life coolant (I know very expensive).

Once the suspension is fixed go to a proper alignment shop. Not just any tire shop.

The alignment for the rear of the B14 cannot be adjusted unless you want to use a hydraulic jack. and not everyone can do this because you need to rig the torsion arm its hollow. you jack that it will be crushed.

Buy the best tires you can afford, it helps in the overall handling of the vehicle. It also helps in the braking department.
160-200 a piece is about right. if you have to upgrade your rims....go 15" best for performance and ride but range of available tires are limited. 16" is max with that size your turning radius would be dramatically reduced.

Whatever you do, dont use those lowering springs. The rear has only an inch of travel. so guess what happens if you do choose to lower your ride.

Most important check for chocolate mousse in the oil. means your cylinder head is kaput, if someone says the cracked cylinder head can be fixed I would like to meet him and stick it up his X@#.

With that Good Luck. Its a great car, better then the civics trust me.

Oh adjust your timing based on your fuel.

OMG thank you sifu! I AM FAVOURITING THIS POST biggrin.gif

oh yah wiring was abit faulty my engine kept trying to die on me but sent back to dealer (friend of mom) who sent the car back to fix n it was fine d. but still the dashboard gear indicator died d, need to fix that, if not at night cant see what gear i am at LOL.

ill check what u mentioned, n btw what do u mean adjust your timing based on your fuel?

if you plan on using ron 95 you might need to retard your timing, otherwise the GA16DE you can advance it further to get more 'power'. As standard the timing is RETARDED (pun intended)
*
yeah im actually using 95 a lot, i just read on nissanforums.com about how to retard timing.. what's the setting for the timing if i wana use 95?

oh wait standard its already retardED right? LOL. seriously, so donit to advance yeah?

a lot of terminologies here I still abit blur haha.. do u still drive ur Sentra? where do u send it for regular maintenance or doing ur tests/fixes?
