Nexus One's unitouch browser falls victim to Cyanogen
By Chris Ziegler posted Jan 21st 2010 7:52PM

Hey, Andy, thanks for "considering" adding multitouch to the Nexus One -- meanwhile, though, there are folks in the trenches actually making it happen, so we might not need your help anymore. The usual suspects over at xda-developers (the legendary Cyanogen, specifically) have mixed, baked, and cooled a delicious new Browser APK for Google's so-called superphone that undoes the company's poorly-made decision to leave out the hot-button feature on everyone's mind. The dude says that you might lose your settings and bookmarks in the process, but we'd say that's a small price to pay -- especially considering that you'd normally have to flash the entire ROM anyhow. Seriously though, Andy, just check it out for a few days and see what you think, alright?

Nexus One's AMOLED screen only uses 16-bit color

Since Google released the Nexus One, people have been ranting and raving about the amazing colors and clarity that its 3.7" AMOLED display outputs. While the Nexus One's colors do pop, the AMOLED technology used for this seemingly "superphone" is less than stellar. DisplayMate ran some tests and the results are nothing short of shocking.

Without going into too much technical jargon, the Nexus One's screen uses a PenTile pixel arrangement. This means that each pixel only contains two sub-pixels. In a traditional display, each pixel consists of three sub-pixels (red, green, and blue). The pixels on the Nexus One's AMOLED display only have a green, plus a red or blue on every other pixel. This isn't necessarily a problem, as the software can just use the red or blue from a nearby pixel, but it does put an extra strain on the software and can cause artifacts to appear on the screen.

DisplayMate points out that the above is irrelevant unless it affects the actual image quality. If a user can't tell the difference, then who cares? Unfortunately for the Nexus One, you can see a huge difference when comparing it to a standard LED display, such as the iPhone's. Here are some of DisplayMate's conclusions:

    * Nexus One's screen only uses 16-bit color with only 32 or 64 intensity levels - This is something that a high performance device should not have. A good screen typically has at least 18-bit color, giving a much larger number of intensity levels with clearer and more accurate colors. Green is present in twice as many pixels as red and blue. This gives green a much higher intensity than other colors.
    * Image quality is resolution scaling is bad - "Pictures and photographs from external sources, whether they be from digital cameras or web content are rendered poorly and inaccurately, with over-saturated colors, bad color and gray-scale accuracy, large color and gray-scale tracking errors, calibration errors, lots of image noise from excessive edge and sharpness processing, and many artifacts."
    * Peak white brightness is very low - This makes the display hard to read when outdoors, and nearly impossible in direct sunlight.
    * Poor calibration - "If the Nexus One display were an LCD it would rank among the worst displays we have ever seen in a shipping product." This could be due to the way the device was manufactured, or even due to the way the Android OS speaks to the display. Either way, the screen doesn't work well for images and web content.

More details are covered in the study and the bottom line conclusion is underwhelming. The Nexus One's screen, from an evolutionary standpoint, is a failure. AMOLED technology is the supposed to be the latest and greatest, not a step backward. Below are images that show how the Nexus One's screen performs next to the iPhone. Notice the image noise and that the dispaly's shortcomings are clearly present. For a phone that's supposed to be centered around eye candy, pictures, and web content, the Nexus One's screen is sure a letdown.

Hi all, I still can't send mms out.......using Digi and I confirmed that my Digi MMS setting is exactly same as what had posted here......I also tried to send out a mms with only around 50kb size and waited whole day but still can't send out.

Again, I'm able to connect to HSPA or 3G for browsing internet, checking email and downloading staff, just mms don't work :-(

Anyone here can help me on this?

I'm using this and it works great with default picture sizing.

You will need to set the DiGi Internet properly in order for the MMS to work. I'm not sure about others. But, my MMS only works after I made change on my DiGi Internet APN. Remember to select DiGi Internet as ur APN.

Added on March 3, 2010, 11:55 ami notice you have an extra port in diginet - 9201
gonna try that out to see if it improves my 3G, currently its just unstable for me hahaha.

thanks for the input!

I'm not sure about the exact usage of supl apn type. I read somewhere in xda about this. Can't remember where though. If i'm not wrong, it's for AGPS to work properly.

For the mms issue, i have one extra APN "Digi GPRS" setup, do you think it'll cause the MMS sending problem?

Ok smile.gif let me answer most question here:

What I do
- I call Malaysia HTC service center but has been inform this phone is not in services as not yet official available in Malaysia.
- Malaysia HTC informed me this phone is not under universal warranty.
- I write an email to HTC via http://www.htc.com/www/support/nexusone/contactus.aspx as I can't call Singapore 1800 from Malaysia.
- In Email, I wrote my phone can't on at all after I unplug the battery during hanging period, I feel so down as I just purchase it less than 4 days.
- I received email after around 3 hours past, requesting me sending over my faulty Nexus One to the only Singapore Service Center.
- A ticketting will be available inside the email where you need to respond, or else after 15 days the case will be auto close.
- I send over to Singapore Service Center second day afternoon alone with printed email reply from HTC web.
- The service Center taken my phone, and back cover (the battery, microSD card is returning).
- After a while, I being given a paper with Job No and being inform you can check your status same as you report before.
- Maybe due to I already bring over the printed email, the service center never asking me any question.
- Service Center informed me most probably will get fix and return the phone by next Monday.
- They provide delivered to your home / office (within Singapore area only)
- I am so suprise where I get call from my friend as the phone already ready.
- I am more suprise when I open up I notice it still wrapped, I immediate check the S/N and notice it was different with the box one.

My Opinion about CyanogenMod 5.0.4.1
- Smoother visual effect, nearly no more lagging issue.
- Extra call button in all contact name.
- Curve corner at Status Bar.
- Power Control Widget bar color change to cyan blue, anyway to return back, I more prefered the android green.
- Startup will change from 4 color animation to blue before success logon to phone.
- Stable than stock ROM.
- Able to install lots of Apps that required root access.
- Auto APNs setup.
- Highly recommended flash but always remember be patient and read carefully all the step, don't ever be my next victim true brick the phone.

So Happy Now  rclxms.gif I didn't flash the Radio this time since I not facing any signal issue and for SAFETY issue.

Once agains thanks for all concern and precautions and guide, at least I not happen to break it again.

Added on March 17, 2010, 11:01 amHi gurus,

Got a question for SMS.

Am I able to save a specific SMS? Currently SMS displays as thread, if I were to delete it, I would be deleting the whole thread sms right? Could I save/move a particular SMS to a specific folder or something?

I have played around with Handcent, but could not find the feature...or did I miss it?

Long press on a particular message will pop you a menu. From there you can delete the message.

To get MFM maps works on Android with Papago M6, you need to do the following:

QUOTE
I copied all the files from the Taiwan version to my SD card. After that, copy over the MFM files except for the following files

MapAniPOI.psu
R51_prp.kuf
R51_SSC.hdr

Rename the MFM MapAniPOI.psu to MapAniPOI.psz and copy that to the SD card. In the SD card, rename

papago.dbp to PAPAGO.DBP
standard.mb6 to Standard.mb6

http://www.malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?p=105365#p105365
Please note that you will need to keep the map folder name as TW.

One thing that I noticed is the logos are not displayed correctly. For example, you may see a lot's of KFC around because it now represents the restaturants/food stalls.

Please list out the all filenames in the TW directory here smile.gif

$ ls /sdcard/Navi/Maps/TW
2) If I want to use MFM only, which TW files should I delete, because I want to save space for other purposes.

TQ
*
You don't have to delete anything in TW directory. You just need to replace them with all the files (except MapAniPOI.psu, R51_prp.kuf and R51_SSC.hdr) from MFM Papago Android. After that, change the extension for MapAniPOI.psu to MapAniPOI.psz and copy that to the SD card (you can do the change in your computer 1st or later in ur phone). Finally, rename papago.dbp to PAPAGO.DBP and standard.mb6 to Standard.mb6.

The problem is TW map takes 900 MB of space, which I don't use. So I think we can try to delete some TW files, just enough to get the M6 to be started. :
*
TW files are only taking up ~600MB+ of space. Most of the files in TW will be replaced by MFM map files which are needed. You don't have to keep another copy of TW in your SD card.

Can you tell us how you do it so that we can trace which part goes wrong?

Let me list out the steps:
1. Download all the required files:

These files are provided by http://kocpc.pixnet.net/blog/post/26463186

TW Map files:
http://www.multiupload.com/E3B5DFJGSX
http://www.multiupload.com/GXOXBQVYTA
http://www.multiupload.com/NJY9WRPQKR
http://www.multiupload.com/LT8VX2I078
http://www.multiupload.com/XNI1T59WVF

Papago M6 Program Files:
http://www.multiupload.com/02UX8WTG4G
http://www.multiupload.com/63MQ4OSDSR

2. Extract Papago M6 Program files (password: http://kocpc.pixnet.net/blog). You should get a folder named 'Navi'. Copy this folder into your SD card root directory (\sdcard\).

3. Extract TW Map files (password: http://kocpc.pixnet.net/blog). Copy all the files in the extracted folder into \sdcard\Navi\Maps\TW

4. Visit http://www.papago.com.tw/android from your Nexus One browser. Download 'M6 V2.0 100324' and then install it on your phone. (direct link: http://www.papago.com.tw/android/PAPAGO_M6_V2.0_100324.apk)

5. After installation, run Papago M6. Put in your registration code if you have one or go for trial. You should now able to view Taiwan maps.

6. Download MFM Papago X3/X5 GPS Map from http://www.malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3184.

7. Run the exe file and select "Papago X5 for Android". After you have gone through the wizard, you should have your map files extracted in C:\Navi\Maps.

8. Copy all the files (except MapAniPOI.psu, R51_prp.kuf and R51_SSC.hdr) in C:\Navi\Maps\MFM\ to \sdcard\Navi\Maps\TW\. Replace all of them when you are prompted that you have the same file exist.

9. Change the extension of MapAniPOI.psu in C:\Navi\Maps\MFM\ to MapAniPOI.psz and then copy it to \sdcard\Navi\Maps\TW\.

10. Finally, rename papago.dbp to PAPAGO.DBP and standard.mb6 to Standard.mb6 (in \sdcard\Navi\Maps\TW\).

Guys, there is no problem to enter english in Papago M6. Everything from POI to addresses are working fine. All you need to do is just turning off the default built-in chinese keyboard. Go to setting and turn the last fourth option (智能型注音快拼) off.
