Hi sifus,

I bought a Denon avr-1508 AV amp. When I hook up to my dvd player using HDMI cable, no sound is coming out from speaker. I tried to switch from digital signal and vice versa, still no output. When i plugged my HDMI cable from dvd player into my LCD tv directly, both audio and visual could be heard...So, my cable should be 1.3 compliant.

pls advise....
cheers

Is this an Old Amp? If so, chances are the HDMI is only for switching (passthrough) to your TV. That means the HDMI signal is not processed by the AVR.

Better double check.

I have the AVR-1508....

to answer your questions.... it *does not* play audio from an HDMI source, *HOWEVER* it does pass the audio from the HDMI source to my display. In my case, I can turn the volume up on the flat panel and get the audio from my digital cable box AND bluray player, it just wont play through the receiver unless I hook up a separate audio connection.

My issue is the receiver is advertised as "Network ready" via one of the 2 network iPod docks, the ASD-3N (wired network) & ASD-3W (wireless network). I bought an ASD-3N to access iPod and other media I have setup on a DLNA server in my house. The dock operates perfectly on its own, directly connected to the receiver for audio and video directly connected to the display via S-Video (your only choice). When I try to send the video signal through my AVR-1508 it wont show it via my HDMI connection or even a S Video out to the display from the receiver either. Seems to me that I should be able to switch video sources even if they need to stay within their respective standards (i.e.- S-Video through S-Video, HDMI through HDMI, etc)

Anyone know anything about this/experience this?

Means Your HDMI port for switching only lor.

E.g Like sometimes people have a TV with only one AV input but they have 2 or 3 Devices to connect to the TV (DVD Player, PS2 Console, etc.), so they buy a switch (a simple box with 3 in & 1 out, I am sure you have seen before) to connect the 3 devices to the TV. The switch only function is to passthrough the AV signal to the TV and nothing else.

Same thing with your AVR HDMI lor. Only meant for switching and not for anything else.

Next time you buy an AVR make sure the HDMI functions are more than just a switch. It should also be a repeater where it can process the HD Audio before passing the signal to the TV.

Anyway, since I noticed you are only using a DVD HDMI player, you don't actually need the HDMI sound (DVD only contain regular Dolby or DTS 5.1 sound only and not HD Audio).

Just connect the Optical or Coaxial cable to your amp and you won't miss anything.

Can ask at the Astro Beyond thread.

Anyway 'hook up' can be different ways. Hookup direct to TV? Through Amp?

Isn't the installer supposed to make sure everything is working?

does no one read manuals any more?

change the audio setting on the decoder to stereo if using HDMI.

Similar for the DVD I suspect the issue is the related to an audio output setting of the DVD which you may be able to change via the menu.

Better just connect your TV direct via HDMI and Coaxial or optical(toslink) output from your DVD player to Denon AVR as suggested by Ngto at post #5 above. At least you can still get the 5.1 surround sound from AVR.
