Do the necessary updates. RAM. Don't download unnecessary large size software.

I am using alternatives softwares (mostly open source softwares) which occupy less space.

Example, I have uninstalled Adobe Reader and installed Foxit. The result? I can open any PDF document faster than ever.

I have uninstalled WinRar and installed 7Zip. WinRar occupied so much space on my hard disk but 7Zip occupies less space.

I use Pidgin for instant messaging (YM, MSN all in one place) so I can get rid of individual instant messaging software - YM, MSN.

I use Open Office rather than Microsoft Office.

I defrag every night, use CCleaner to clean up any unwanted files/registry, scan with Avast and Malwarebytes often and update everything especially Windows Updates and antivirus updates.

There is no way to make your Vista run faster once it is infected with malware.
And there are malwares that even the most advance Security Suites also unable to detect.
You only need to connect to internet and surf internet/download updates and files, after few hours some malwares will get into your system and make your system slow/sluggish. icon_idea.gif
(Note: The above is what i believe. Other people might disagree with me.)

other than that.. if your PC only has 1GB RAM.. upgrade to 2GB or more.

Low memory tend to cause lag and slow performance...

1. use CCleaner.
2. uninstall the program that you doesnt use at all.
3. upgrade your RAM memory, min 2GB.
4. use disk cleaner freaquently.
5. defragmentation.
6. avoid too many program running on the desktop bar, which is on your bottom right.

* this tweek very helpful for me, i'm using Vista Business anyway.

Defrag: If you are using vista then you do not need 3rd party defragmenters, vista already schedule weekly defrag sessions. Just change the schedule so that it happens when your system is on.

GC: Get a decent graphics card (or onboard) that is vista ready, use Windows Aero but disable transparency.

For sadists tongue.gif : use vlite http://www.vlite.net/
