Pierre Morel Talks DUNE!!

user posted image

TAKEN director Pierre Morel spoke to MTV about his forthcoming adaptation of DUNE.

In the interview, Morel reveals that he likes David Lynch's 1984 adaptation as a Lynch film (but not as a DUNE interpretation) and also discusses his own relationship to the property. Turns out, he's read Herbert's original book (HERE) a number of times and intends to stay quite faithful to it.

QUOTE
“I’ve been reading it over and over again – well, I’m 45 now, so for 30 years. The fun story, actually, is that there were six books in that first series that Frank Herbert wrote. Every time I was going to buy a new one – because I couldn’t buy all six at one time – I was reading the previous ones so I would not forget anything. So, by the time I bought the sixth book I had already read the first one six times! So, I’m a hardcore fan.”
    [EDIT]
“[My movie] is all about the first book. I’m trying to be very respectful to the original novel,”

Ive been introduce by the games Sega Dune2 until I realize its originate from Frank Herbert Dune. Seems similar but different from Star Wars, the original 1984 Dune movie was impressive and above my expected. Then Scifi 'Frank Herbert Dune and children of dune which I think is good.

I didnt read about the novel but I like its storyline,

After Blade Runner 2049 (Sci-Fi), Denis Villeneuve reportedly will tackle adaptation of DUNE

QUOTE
“David Lynch did an adaptation in the ’80s that has some very strong qualities, I mean David Lynch is one of the best filmmakers alive, I have massive respect for him. But when I saw his adaptation I was impressed, but it was not what I had dreamed of, so I’m trying to make the adaptation of my dreams.

It will not have any link with the David Lynch movie. I’m going back to the book, and going to the images that came out when I read it.”

Denis Villeneuve
QUOTE
Instead, Villeneuve will be starting from scratch and drawing on the book as inspiration for how the movie will look:

“It will not have any link with the David Lynch movie. I’m going back to the book, and going to the images that came out when I read it.”

Villeneuve has had quite the creative run in recent years, directing acclaimed movies such as Arrival, Enemy and Sicario.

While Villeneuve’s sequel Blade Runner 2049 may have failed to impress at the box office, it was critically acclaimed and is considered a worthy follow-up to the classic original.

While the director was apparently in the running for James Bond 25, it seems his commitment to Dune has ruled him out of the job.

While Villeneuve is undoubtedly a great choice, Dune has become a notoriously tricky project to adapt for the big screen.

Before Villeneuve became attached, Peter Berg and Pierre Morel both spent years trying to get a new version made, and even prior to Lynch’s movie, filmmakers like Ridley Scott and Alejandro Jodorowsky tried and failed to mount adaptations.

Dune isn’t the easiest book to adapt given the amount of characters and scope of the story – but if any filmmaker can do it justice, it’s Villeneuve.
*to date, Villeneuve's DUNE has no release date

HBO next big budget production aside GOT, Confederate and Westworld is Watchmen sequel. The idea is to use the social/political story platform to react to the era of Trump's shitshow administration.

DV's Dune adaptation still too early to tell whether it can materialize as all boils down to Universal and Legendary willing to pull the trigger or not.

Lo and behold.

They are hiding Feyd Rautha and only one quick shot of Baron. Easily my most anticipated movie this year after Tenet has let me down.

Sweet... Denis Villeneuve seem to be only one capable of revisiting classic films and making it work again today 😁 Not an easy feat to achieve as it can be seen as "cheesy"

Official BTS session moderated by Stephen Colbert with the main cast.

Zendaya and Timothee casting a closer representation to the essence of the book. They are supposed to be 15 years old IIRC.

Why trailer cut & editing looks dated la? Bgm didn't make any impression...I didnt expect it to be as loud as TENET la..with the BGM screaming "LOOK HERE...I AM HERE..THE BGM IS DOPE!!! CHECK ME OUT!!" but considering DUNE's budget, u expect some level of epic orchestral or at least mildly pulsating bgm...😏

Sigh....!!! Dude that's Han Zimmer rework of Pink Floyd's Eclipse. It's a nod to the failed adaptation of Jodorowsky's Dune. Pink Floyd suppose to score the music on that failed movie. It's effing Pink Floyd and show some respect boy!

Didn't change the fact trailer was so-so. It reminds alot of Star Wars: Force Awakens...and it was dogshit. Bored TF outta me. This one seems in-line with it. Maybe for veterans it would be fun or even evoke nostalgia. Not criticizin it or anything. Just sayin with it's budget, trailer cut & editing could've been tighter. Peace yo

That's your lowly opinion and doesn't mean it's the consensus. In what reality does the name Hans Zimmer and Pink Floyd music right constitute as low budget or lazy effort? Unless you're living under a rock, hasn't it been the trend of reworking classic songs for trailers is all the rage. How is this any different from The Batman, Death by Nile, WW 84, etc... I am not criticizing you for disliking the trailer, but mischaracterization of no budget just because the bgm selection not up to your standard. Last I checked...360k likes vs 10k dislikes. Not in any metric form that the trailer is as disastrous as you perceive it to be. Correlation does not mean causation.... If you equate Dune to Star Wars TFA, then you have no idea what it is all about!

Woot...they included a prescience vision at the end of the trailer. Since they are splitting the movie into two parts, the final battle is in the 2nd portion and won't be in the first movie. So a little heads up. Fingers crossed can watch this at cinema by the time it drops.

Dune for dummies. A run through of who's who in the Dune universe. Hope they get to make Part 2 otherwise will be a real bummer. Book 1 is the more linear hero's journey tale, book 2 onwards is where the mind fuck begins and hard to fathom casual viewers ready to embrace where the story heading.

Dune predates GOT by few decades. GRRM is the one rip-off some aspects of Frank Herbert into GOT. Not the other way around.

Thinking I'd watch this in the best cinema hall I can find (in terms of screen).

Is TGV IMAX still using their old 2K Digital projectors for their halls? Last time I think I watched anything in their halls was back in 2017, and IIRC it still was 2K. If they're all still on 4K, what other halls are on 4K++ projectors/screens apart from Onyx halls?

Thanks to my finance minister, she got me into a close door screening by WBM.Pretty sure during the Oscars, Dune will dominate all the technical aspects. The nature of the first movie is all about set-up and you don't get to settle into the meat of Paul's journey of becoming Space Jesus yet. Also the Emperor and Feyd Rautha has yet to enter the picture. Overall the movie only manage to scratch on the surface of things to come and a bummer should the sequel forthcoming, it'll be another 2 to 3 years of waiting. In post GOT era, the uninitiated viewer will compare this as Stark vs Lannister, Kwisatz Haderach a rip-off of Azor Ahai. Just wish the movie emphasize a little more on the role of Bene Gesserit in the grand scheme of things. Now the ending is hanging and some key players not in the play. Aesthetically this is an improvement over David Lynch's failed 84 version, Bad as it may of the old movie, this new version is not as rich with the world building aspects. Also don't go in expecting SW kind of spectacle, after all this is still a Dennis Villeneuve film. It's a thinking man sci-fi and not some popcorn cgi orgy. Although an incomplete experience, still go for IMAX as they try to recreate some epic cinematography scale like Lawrence of Arabia. Too attached with the books and can't decide yet how good is this until the second part come out.

Per social media + corporate announcements, the only 4K halls I found so far were:
All Onyx halls in Malaysia (Mid Valley, i-City, etc)
MBO Starling (but it's closed)

GSC socmed also listed these as 4K halls:
IOI City Mall (Big Hall)
Paradigm JB (Big Hall)
Mid Valley Southkey (All Halls + Aurum Theater)
The Gardens Mall (All Halls).

Now waiting on TGV socmed to reply... I believe most of TGV's IMAX halls are still on the old IMAX 2K Xenon projectors.

Dune (2021)

user posted image

Hi Kiddies

Hope everyone here remains well.

This long awaited, second time adapted for movie 50 year old Frank Herbert's book is finally in Malaysia cinema.

I have very little recollection of the really messy 1984 Dune movie. I don't remember liking it (apparently, the studio meddled, and demanded edits, making the movie shorter and nonsensical. Although it had the singer, Sting.

Fast forward 16 years, and Scifi made two mini series, titled Frank Herbert's Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003) abet on a Scifi network budget. Even when I first watched it, back in the day, I thought the costumes were... horrendous (imagine a 1st year fashion school student's work).

The story is more comprehensible but until you watch Denis Villeneuve's (director) Dune, you have no idea how "expensive" the world of Frank Herbert's Dune is.

The casting, the script and the thought put into the world building is second to none.

I do not have access to Imax cinemas at this point in time, and I really REALLY wish I have.

This movie is breathtaking.

The only downside I can make about this movie is stated at the very beginning of the movie, namely the title, Dune, Part One.

This movie is now being exhibited outside of USA.

It will concurrently be release in the States at the cinema and HBO max.

Box office receipt will determine if Denis Villeneuve gets to do Part Two...

In my humble opinion, if you are a Sci Fiction fan and can visit a cinema safely, please do consider watching it a cinema.

A small screen will not do it Justice

As a fan of the original 6 x books series by Frank Herbert (excluding the expanded Dune universe prequels and 2 part sequel to the final 6th book) mediocre books from Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson) since high school, I wholeheartedly enjoyed the Villeneuve's take at adapting book 1 on the big cinema screen.

It's brutal, dark and visceral (similar to Vileneuve's Blade Runner 2049 sequel) and damn, watching the movie on IMAX really gives you that sense of scale of how gigantic the buildings and space crafts really are. To top it off, Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is immersive as it is mystical and tribal like.

Go watch it!

If you're smitten by the movie, do seek out this GN if you don't want slogging the ori dense book. It's supervised by Brian Herbert, the son of the author. I've read about 20 pages in, it's very faithful and definitely will gives you more context of Reverend Mother Helen Mohiam and more interaction with Baron Harkonnen. The book also ends similarly to where the movie ends Either get it on comixology, Ebay and of course some scallywag named Jack with a certain bird surname.

Probably the only complain I have at this point is the missing scenes. Like the hyperspace travel scene/inside heighliner. And the dinner party scenes at the Keep. Also, a scene of interaction between lasgun & shield would be pretty cool too.

Missing character like Baron Harkonnen's other nephew. Pretty sure they gonna show the Emperor & Princess Irulan in the next part.

Do take note Dune is those prestige film that does not appeal to the lowest denominator. Those couldn't appreciate it simply their taste of watching nuanced storytelling and finer filmmaking not fully developed. Then again Dune is a very complex act to follow. I cannot fathom they are able to do Book 2 onwards on film and breaking the meta of a conventional protagonist. It went from Space Jesus to Space Hitler. Frank Herbert is all about illustrating the shortcomings of a messianic figure.

One could argue Frank Herbert was making a statement about crude oil (spice) in the middle east and how the occidentals (the royal houses) are using the commodity to enrich themselves while in the middle east, only a few, benefits.

No need to argue, the danger of Messiah is the core message. Environmental, imperialism, economic supremacy, religion, and good old feminism are the subtext.
It began with a concept: to do a long novel about the messianic convulsions which periodically inflict themselves on human societies. I had this idea that superheros were disastrous for humans. - Frank Herbert

this is a good remake. coz the last one was on 2000 & 2003 the sci fi series. which is a good miniseries.

the 1984 one ok la... but the theme song very keng. you can hear a bit of the 1984 tune near the movie end.

the theme song reminds me of the 1984 dune theme song.

when watching, i kept repeat the lines whenever i see a scene:
"wormsign"
"harvester under attack"
"unit lost"
"fremen trooper ready"
"reinforcement have arrived"

1: Soundtrack reminds me of interstellar (Duh)

2: Overexposure shot of desert gets tiring (Physically and mentally)

3: Watched it in GSC 4dx (RM30 plus):-

a) Tilt of the seat during flight is fun
b) Fan blowing cooled air in desert scene is lulz
c) Seat vibrate on every explosion AND sword fighting (1 buzz every time sword hit the shield) is painful to the butt
d) Seat shaking during sword close combat can be jarring

as far as i know the floppy disk point and click Dune is the first dune game,

dune 2 is westwood studio first RTS game, before they make C&C series.

dune 2000 is the remake of dune 2 by westwood

dune 2 is actually the grandfather of modern RTS genre.

I see many young generations that doesn't read or know about the original novel, went into the cinema because of few big names like Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin and Zendaya, expecting an action filled movie, but end up disappointed, and claim it's boring laugh.gif

This masterpiece aint for the general public, especially those spoilt by the superhero action genre

I'm kinda worried now I won't be able to see Part 2

PS: this is one of those movie that need to be watch on huge IMAX screen with best audio system in order to appreciate the scale of it

while watching the movie, I kinda have this dejavu feeling
some scenes felt like I've seen it before, and no, I haven't watch any of the trailers nor read any reviews about the movie

turn out some of the scenes are very similar to the first Dune 1984 (I was surprised I still remember many of it laugh.gif), as well as the lead actor, Timothee is kinda reprising his role of a reluctant leader from his other movie on Netflix, The King

good news indeed, but gotta wait until 2023 before we can watch in on big screen

WB should have green light the idea of filming part 1 & 2 together, not only it will reduce the production cost and time, the fans can watch it in cinema sooner as well

as most of the multipart epic movies are filmed in the same production cycle nowadays, I was surprised that Dune haven't done so...

oh well, that's WB...

Nah, it's Legendary cause they took 80% stake in financing Dune because they literally owned the rights to Dune. Back to back they didn't have a giant hit after their divorce from Universal until Kong vs Godzilla. Also DV track record in opening big numbers pretty much non existent. WB is in Netflix mode, they are hungry for content to feed HBO Max.

DV did vaguely said he likes The Messiah chapter, it may end up a trilogy with Leto Atreides II to bookend the ending. Also HBO wants a Bene Gesserit show from DV.

Watched it over the weekend and it had to be one of the best sci-fi film I've seen in years.

Everything about the movie, from the visual effects, the music, the plot, the pacing, the action sequences, the sound effects/design, the acting... wow!

I 'forced' myself to watch the 1984 Dune prior to this film and almost fell asleep.

But the 2021 version, not even a minute was boring. It was in every sense much better than the 1984 version.

Was surprised to see "Part One" at the intro title (didn't read too much into the 2021 version prior to watching it to keep any new surprises away and was also thinking it was going to follow the 1984 version very closely and that was only done in 1 lengthy part).

No idea what the RottenTomatoes score is, but I'm thinking it should be easily 85-90% hmm.gif

Denis Villeneuve is really becoming a master sci-fi specialist. Not only is he taking on projects that already 'existed' in the past, but making his version fresh & contemporary for today's audiences, something most film makers fail to achieve when taking on such projects. "Don't ruin the classic!" Nope, not when it is being done by Denis Villeneuve.

This is not a mere update, it is much more than that. It just revitalized the entire Dune series that ever existed in any media form.

Tell me if this isn't scary or what sweat.gif

The chant sequences were also incredibly creepy thumbsup.gif

The ridiculous costumes (I know it's based on the books) from the 1984 version + the unusually lengthy explanation / exposition = I really wanted to see how it was going to be done here. Let me just say, the first line of the movie "Dreams are messages from the deep" already set the stage for what is to come (as we keep getting Paul's dreams and mention of dreams - the audiences now have a tendency to remember that first line). The costumes are superb as well thanks to some very good design choices and the use of CG when in masses.

The 84 Dune opens up my mind to sci-fi not just pew-pew like Star Wars. It led me to Moebius, Heavy Metal comic books and Nausicca. Terrible as it may with the messy narratives, you can't deny all the wonderful weird things of David Lynch. It's a very truncated experience to say the least. Yeah I did bought a blu-ray when physical copy still a thing. Dune book 1 audiobook clocks in around 12 hrs. So can imagine the compromise it takes to cramp everything into 2 hour plus movie. Then again purist blowhards will nitpick down to the most minuscule detail. Some shitheads already complain '21 Dune for not showing the events exactly like the book. It's a movie A D A P T A T I O N numbskull!!!

IMAX is under TGV, a quick check on their website suggest, no... Sometimes, when they run out of new stuff to show, they may re run good older movie

Florence Pugh is quickly becoming an A-lister. Austin Butler looks promising in the new Baz Luhrmann movie biopic about Elvis.

ooops my original response is gone.

anyway what i wanted to say is that starwars was gold. disney was sitting on gold. but instead of making more gold, they shat on the gold. kept shitting. sometimes their shitty gold shined bright but it was not enough. theres so much shit everywhere.

personally in my headcannon the entire starwars franchise ended in the last jedi.

i know that some of the disney starwars spinoffs are good, but my interest has already been KILLED. i m an old nerd. i dont have time for disney starwars.

and yeah theres many new content popping up everywhere. heck even anime is much more interesting now

Managed to watch Dune part 1 on netflix last night, survived for ~2 hours straight without feeling sleepy LOL!

All i can say is, not bad for a sci-fi. But since i never read the book but only played Dune 2000 RTS pc game last time, i can understand a little bit of the story so far.

I was away when this came out. So here's my thoughts after watching it last night. Appreciate the epic action but was letdown on the character development. Thought they would build more and not rushing the transition of Muad'Dib to Kwisatz Haderach. Overall still good but not great. Like Nolan art house film director still weak at executing hand to hand action sequences, the knife fight just meh!

Now that Part 3 Messiah arc is on the horizon, do wonder how the public will react to the time skip and not about the Holy War. It's a downfall arc and freaky new characters. Paul Atreides became a prisoner to his own vision and prelude to God Emperor arc which is the nightmare phase of Dune.
