Hi all.. this is a question that i hope people who are working in banks, or hr people from banks or those who have the experience can answer.

I'm wondering if those who study engineering can work in banking industry? will they be accepted? i know they can if they do sales in banking but what about other positions? I'm an engineering graduate who has work a few years in manufacturing and hope to change career to banking.. but i wonder this can happen as most of the time when i see the job recruitment, mostly will ask for finance/ business admin..

Sure they'll hire you. Plenty of bankers have engineering degrees.

Yeah, that's what I heard from my banker friends too. I have quite a number of friends that work in different banks and they claimed they have colleagues from engineering background. And mind you, those said colleagues are not working in the Sales & Marketing department. From what I see in banks, as long as its in the right department, you can come from any background also even if you studied Tourism. Try consulting their HR departments

You can be in a bank, but I dont think they'll give you 'engineer's pay'.

well, i'm happy to be in IT as long as i can.

MBA would definitely help u in the biz management part but it really depends on what dept / role u're interested in in the bank

there's another masters prog more suited for IT and Eng background ppl. it enables u to be consultant on IT systems... like for banks, u will probably be involved in the planning of transaction systems (and watever systems they have, or would like to have in place)

My ex-colleague who is now regional manager of a local bank, was doing food tech during his uni. He, however, has a MBA.

70% of execs in my company are engineers... but non are doing engineering... lol

i think trend nowadays are that banks like to recruit engineering students. many of my friends are employed in companies such as pwc (audit firm la.. nonetheless..), hsbc and ambank.

I graduated with a degree in lectrical ngneering and was offerd a job in CIMB Complete Banker Programme. I do have a few friend who were engineering graduates working in investment banking and audit firms.

i'm an engineer in pure engineering field for almost 3 years. Can i still switch to bank job and wat position they will offer me eh?

thanks for all the advice. but the problem is are all the bank jobs for engineer only are in the headquarter? what about the branches in other states? Because i'm not from KL and when i apply for bank job in the branches, i always ended up getting interview for sales position.

anyway, i have already worked 6 years in engineering.. and already too old to join the trainee program.

You should start to knowhow the banking industry works by means mixing around with friends or any other resources. With you 6 years working experience, you are not suppose to start as a trainee. Try to think of some transferable skill from your previous working experience or knowledge that able to applies in banking.
Secondly , what position are your looking for?. IMHO, You should take up the sales position offered if you has intention to venture your career into banking. Although this position might not what you interest in banking, but it always a stepping stone for you to switch to other subs division banking field. This is how it works when someone would like to switch to a totally new industry. Grab the opportunities and slowly find your way to strive what you intended of position in banking.

It is good that you dare to switch new career and learn new things beside only stagnant in engineering.

jasinh, don't worry. It is possible for you to change from engineering field to finance. I have a friend, she was a civil engineer, worked in a construction firm for few years. She joined the FSTEP and now is working in one of the top local banks. She studied MBA with me.

it seem like possible to switch to different background after all...

btw, after we join to bank... can we end up promote to manager? if have different certificate?
