any linux that u like. But I would recommend mandrake or fedora. coz these are not too complicated to install. Besides, u can either select grud or lilo for the dual boot when installing linux. I used lilo most the time though.
Or if u want to use a windows mbr... u can try boot from ur xp cd and press 'r' instead of going on for the installation. (that is of coz if u install ur xp first) and type 'fixmbr' to overwrite the boot loader. But I personally have not done this, just learnt from the internet. or for ur second choice u can first install linux than windows. but that is only if u want the windows mbr. good luck! |

if u dont touch/change/reformat/fdisk that hdd, after ur win partition is missing, u might try Advanve Partition Recovery (full version, as Trial only able to view the pastition deleted). 1. use partition magic (or any other partition maker) to get extra partition for linux. 1-3GB is enuf, make it EXT2, EXT3, or reiserFS filesystem format (think it as FAT32 or NTFS on windows). make another partition <500MB as SWAP format. 2. boot with linux bootable cdrom. partition manually, DON'T partition automatically. n every steps u choose, read the side notes. 3. yes suse is easier for newbie, but the installation steps is long (n tricky too). 4. use live cd such as knoppix/std, feather, dsl, mandrake etc. 5. wanna simple one first? try out libranet 2.7 classic. based on debian, it only 1 CD. on minimal install, it takes <450MB with Icewm "theme". for gnome or kde, it take more space. 6. for safety, use another HDD |

if you want to install 2 OS:Linux, winXP,then it is better to make a FAT32 partition for file exchange between NTFS & EXT3 or EXT2,
because from linux, you can read files from NTFS but you can't write files into it...... so it is better have an FAT32 because linux support read & write for it |

use suse linux instead. i really recomend it. i'm using suse (i still wonder how to pronouns the word suse
for dual boot. get yourself a bot manager. for me ii'm using OS SELECTOR from acronis. i just installed winxp in my firs partion, my linux in second partion and i installed the OS SELECTOR and it outo detect both my xp and linux. but u must not installed le LILO or GRUB (linux boot loader) in your MBR. if u don want to use boot manager like OS SELECTOR, PARTION MAGIC, u can also just use Linux boot loader to enable u to dual boot. but u need to configure the linux boot loader manually. but for suse and fedora, there boot loader is configure automatically to enable you to make dual boot but u MUST installed xp first before linux. QUOTE just wondering myself...if u were to install 2 OS;windows n linux, can u install both in the same drive?will it detect if installed in different drives? yes u can do that in same drive but u cannot boot them in the same time QUOTE by using vm ware...u can boot 2 os in one drive... vm ware will create one visual drive so that can install other os in it.. but using dual boot u have to consider Ram and space factor.. the usage of the ram will be double from usual coz 2 os operating at one time never heard of that. i have installed both in the same drive but as i said earlier cannot boot both in the same time. so just one OS is in pysical ram. not both. the trick for dual os is playing with your mbr. but beware it can make your entire hdisk unaccessable. i just recoment. 1. installed your xp in first partion 2. manually partion your second partition to installed linux using 3rd party partion sofware. 3. installed your linux on second parition and your linux bootloader in in mbr of the disk. i belive for fedora and suse and also mandrake (not sure) it will automatic configure to dual boot to xp. please correct me if i've said something wrong here p/s: please excuse my spelling and gramatically error |

I would suggest to use Fedora Core 3/ Suse 9.2/Ubuntu for the newbie.
For the installation: 1) First create 1024Mb partition for MBR(either Lilo/Grub) 2) Secondly, install Windows XP in second partition 3) Lastly, install Linux in third partition Good Luck! |

VM = virtual machine. Hence, VMWare is the software that lets you emulate multiple Operating Systems on a single machine. That doesn't count as dual boot, because there's no disk partitioning involved. This post has been edited by husagi: Mar 15 2005, 03:06 PM |
