I heard people says that Singaporean universities prefer students with their own Singapore A Level than Cambridge A Level, is this true? If I'm taking Cambridge or London A Level, would my chance of getting into Singaporean universities like Nan Yang Tech or NUS be slimmer than others?

I believe no one can tell you the actual ans, but based on my experience, it doesn't matter much, same with STPM. what i believe matters is whether u r singaporean, as quota will be based on citizen/ non-citizen status instead of pre U qualifications. It's just my opinion, and not necessarily the right ans out there.

As far as I know, what you say is true. And to surprise you a bit, the order goes like this.

Singaporean A-Level > Malaysian A-Level (aka STPM!) > Cambridge/London A-Level.

See how good is STPM?
LOL..

But the difference should not be something that you need to worry about, unless you went for the super competitive course like Medicine or Dentistry.

But many people here thought Cambridge/London A Level is better and more recognized than STPM. I bet that is a case of:
1. Grass in the other field is greener
2. Inferiority complex.
3. Brain washing by advertisement.
4. Kiasu

+1!!!
as for quota, Singaporeans always complain too many space are given to foreigners, leaving polytechnic "rejects" to go overseas (mainly Australia).
anyway, certain major such as computer sci some claim its kinda like 2:1 ratio! those PRC/Indians come on scholarship or got a deal to pay local rate.

to TS: good luck! just try

If foreigner like PRC and Indian are the cream of their respective country, why not entice them to come to Singapore? A good way to build up your brain bank. Very unlike you know who.

Act there's the idea most people are thinking of, but I know in medicine batch 2007, there are more Cambridge/London A-Levels than STPM, and STPM are more Spore A-levels. but definitely there are many factors involved like the number of applicants in each categories, individual performances, etc. I'm only talking abt msians here.

Well, take a look at the straight As students of A-Levels, then STPM. (I have no idea at all on Singapore A-Level straight As figure.)
So, as you point out, the number of applicants. I believe the UK A-Levels graduates far outnumbered the STPM one (and of course, those doing STPM are usually having financial difficulties which further reduce the number of applicants.)
Alright, I guess my guess is valid.

yes, everything is getting more expensive not only in sg but around the world isn't it? at least have grant better paying full rate. which country in the region so generous. only in Eruope maybe can find so generous country sweden change policy to start charging fees rate maybe close to what german/france is doing. finland still free. other popular edu destinations such as usa, uk, oz all full rate.

LOL, Malaysia public universities are inexpensive, but hardly many people care about it. Sad case.
And too bad, in those Europe countries, we need to master their languages.

yes, German/France have to master their language..
Sweden/Finland only selected programs taught in English, daily life.. knowing their language maybe helpful even if english is their 2nd language.

true! even as international students rates is only range btw 17k to 21k.. thats still lower than sgd$10K.

Just like the Singapore Cambridge A Level, their Singapore Cambridge O Level are different from the usual Cambridge A/O Level. I once read on some official website saying the reason was because Singapore consider the usual test's standard too low or something.

Malaysian girl tops GCE level exam in Singapore

SINGAPORE, Jan 11 — A Malaysian girl who studied in a Singapore school emerged tops in the city-state after she scored 10 A1s in the 2009 Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination.

Lai Kai Rou, 16, who hails from Selangor, studied at CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School (SNGS) which also topped Singapore schools with 14 of the 42 state best scorers being its students scoring 9 A1s, according to the Education Ministry which released the result today.

The Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level Examination was conducted jointly by the University of Cambridge International Examinations, the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board and the ministry.

A total of 37,424 school candidates sat for the 2009 O-Level Examination and 37,380 or 99.9 percent had been awarded certificates, the ministry said. Lai entered the Singapore school four years ago after completing his primary school in a Chinese school. — Bernama

that is incorrect........the favoured qualification to enter ipta is the matrik pathway.........and this is helped by grading lower performance in matrik with higher cgpa, so matrik students get better results and gets preferentially selected over stpm students............

Malaysia public universities favour matriculation as posted earlier, and also takes in STPM students, for Malaysians.
Indeed, the only pathway, for non-bumi, and for those with normal lucks (those getting into matriculation are the highly lucky one), the only path way is STPM.

But how many of us actually think of getting enrolled into UM, USM, UKM etc.?
A lot of us, graduate from SPM and don't give a damn about STPM and want to try A-Level, SAM etc.
Well, partly it's the Malaysian education system that throws in hatred into the prestigious STPM. And of course, the successful marketing of the private universities are very good as well. And again, the government doesn't seem to be concerning about raising the profiles and reputations of the local universities so that the shelter of the Malays will always be there!
