white wood dunhuang is a bit steep but the price for GZ increased tremendously last 2 yrs due
to shortage of wood and living cost in China.

and u paying premium too for the Dunhuang brand which also a very reliable brand.
Honestly if I were you.. i will dig deeper and empty my pockets for a slightly better one than
a white wood.... at least a normal red wood else you will regret it before you reach G4.

2yrs ago I paid US$2,900 including freight by AIR to Malaysia an elite model guzheng now it cost
US$3,200/= excluding postage.
In addition I paid RM2.6+ => US$1 and now is about RM3.0+ per USD.

The price for Zheng will increase again soon as now its a lifestyle item for the PRC families.

later while you advancing try to change the entire set of strings to Dunhuang Type B and change a good set
of bridges; Zitan purple sandalwood .. that's the last and only thing you can do for upgrading ur piece of wood without burning a hole in ur pockets.

But bear in mind and large you can't get these two items in malaysia.

Oh yeah ... try to get a proper set of turtle nails ... not those cheaplat plastic nails.

A good and proper foundation can build a MEGA tower later... 基本功 need to be tok-kong solid if you wan to excel ...... and I'm sure sifus like empire/faceless/xi-Ying/cassie agree with me. I only "kong-song" as I'm too
lazy to do enhance my 基本功 until my sifu-chay aslo kenot tahan and kuat kuat lali from teaching me.

PM me when u really got sick of ur present ones. Try the present strings 1st until you advance to G3 or G4; or when you begin to enter competitions/performances then u start the upgrade as once you did then there is NO
U-turn back as you will keep on using the B strings unless you want to re-string the entire guzheng again to
the normal strings. Gz strings especially #1 to #10 very easy to break one. B strings sell in sets ONLY.

For info my gal even snapped string #21 once when she was in a foul mood during practice of 战台风. 2yrs ago

I re-emphasis again until tis moment you can't get the B-strings in Malaysia/Singapore even Hongkong.
In Shanghai they normally sell it to the performers/ uni students only as its very limited... imported Stainless
steel nylon coated from Germany under speacial request by Dunhuang GZ for their high end guzhengs.

For one set u can get it thru me if you really WANT it as I normally keep at least 6 sets for my gal's woods... but I need to check wit her 1st else wait till my next purchase.

Bridges not as easy as the strings due to the high demand and limited production.. its custom made.

RM80 for 1 box (1side of the hand only) is a fair price for the nails. I've even paid RM120/4 nails.
But lately her sifu awarded her 2 complete sets of FINE turtle nails and one set of extreme rare bridges
that he brought it back from Beijing for himself.

Tat's where I know a good set of bridges can turn a mid-range GZ to a high end one.

The sound produced can be very bright and loud and not "lumpy".

I'm quite ok.. as long as not weekdays as occasion buka puasa.

But Mei Mei is a bit tough i reakon as she will b gearing up for her ABRSM G8 pract. exam in July, Guzheng
G9 exam in August and her guzheng competition in Hongkong during mid August too. If she is ok then I bring her along.

I just check the nails for u.

Mei^2 got at least 30+ nails in varies sizes and thickness.

Some with grooves and some without. Some cheaplat looks alike plastic turtle nails and some real
thick one.

So i reakon at the end of the day go to the centre and choose ur own nails that fits your fingers.


Cheaplat nails but sometime can do wonders and budget.


Good nails but when chips so will ur heart. LOL! Not easy to find exact replacement.

TQVM brudder for the prasie to tis devil gal of mine.

Btw; heard from her tat u mentioned about the 3kaki tone is out but the guy came 2 mths ago only. If really out of tune then I must have poured couple of hundred bucks into the drain.

Any reco for a real honest guy to get the 3kaki back in order as her AB-G8 is just next mth. Tha.

Finally u came to my shabby bunker... why you didn't ask her to play the Western Capriccio while u hit the gompang.

Mei-mei & family will be away from KampuingKUL till 21st August for her duet in HKG.

This time shall be Clashes amongst the titans.

I'll be free after 21st late noon but Meimei will b busy preparing for another 3 major events held on the

Briefed by the organiser... very likely total 8 contestant (2 from varies categories) will be sent to Hong Kong for grand finals.

1st Cat... Young students from 7yrs old

2nd Cat... Teens

3rd Cat ... Youth .

4th Cat... Senior.. .. Above 40... hahaha.. Brudder Faceless so this round hope you will join.

The fierce round shall be the group within the Youth..... Clash of the Titians again.

I cannot widely recomands ppl to go to certain centre openly as most of the well known guzheng centres in klang valley
i know them personally in one way or another and I don't drive a W210 benz. later they kayoh me lar.

But nobody can force u if u dun want to sit for the exam right !

Just finish the songs within ur grade and i'm sure ur teacher will advance to the next chapter.

My gal didn't sit for any exam right until she finishes her G6 songs then to G8 and G9 ..

they just encourage u to sit but at the end it's u whois the paymaster.

same thing... most of the scores are written for 21strings... 23strings only remains in "DunHuang" KampungKUL ... and
nothing affiliated with the Dunhuang Shanghai.... that was yrs ago... (thousand apologise to any 23strings teacher in the forum if I'm wrong).

Last year during the 2nd International Malaysia Zheng Open Championship there were quite a number of the 23strings contestants
but none of them made to semi finals. Mayb the panel judges dun know how to grade them or perhaps they think we are still
in dino era (my humble opinion) !

Technically these 2 type are two different in each other way.
One emphasize lots of method and 基本功 while the other is as long as u play the correct sound ... why worry.

This tie back to the above example... as long as the food is cooked ...wah lar who cares.... microwave or normal stove doesn't matter.
Job accomplished and that's IT ????!!!!!

BUT taste is not the same........ I would like my veg stir fried with wok hai .... not 'ting' in 3min and serve .

Been to Sg for guzheng workshops and just got back from the Hkg Open youth Zheng championship..... ONLY 21 strings used.

But I still have an old highly paid 23 steel strings Zitan guzheng hibernating in its box.
Yearning for its owner to fiddle with it which I think very unlikely until my next after generation..... present from ah kong.

Choice of the guzheng for 23 strings are very limited and the steel strings not only expensive but limited places to obtain too.

While the 21 strings gz you can get it almost every chinese music instrument shop in town and I can say 99% are all
Shanghai / Yangchow / Tianyi Zheng.

Only the last 1% is the Xian Zheng and can be seen in PJ Keegan or another one is in Pg.

Honestly the price you pay for a beginner 23 string guzheng you can get a mid-range 21 string from Dunhuang or Yangchow.

The slightly better one of the 23 strings I can get an elite level for a 21 strings.

P/S :- Brudder faceless... Meimei accumalated another 15yrs old black DunHuang rare Zitan recently.
Now hunting for the ultimate "倚天劍".

where got ? Only junks and rubbish.

hahaha...... I hate to disappoint but it might be hard.

Right after Meimei SPM at the end of month .... she'll be down to JB from 1st till 9th Dec. (Rehearsal, performance, 3days GZ camp
and 2days charity performances in JB....... her sifu had been planning and postponing these events just to suit her scheule for awhile.

Rush back to KampungKUL just in time for her prom with another performance which yet to collograph (contemporary latin).

Then road trip for couple of days with a bunch of high school leavers mates to dun know where which I lost track and back to Ah Pa for
Winter Solstice feastival with Yeh-Yeh and later X'mas performances.

This month she can't be available as tie down with SPM and I'm on standby mode to be on exile until end of the year facing the
great cold winter with these old bones of mine.

Normally I'll be with her no matter which part of world but this time I hate but have to let go as might be out from Kampung at any time.

So u guys go ahead and I'll try my utmost to be with you for the gathering..... if possible I'll bring her and some duty free goodies along.
