QUOTE(serenayap @ May 29 2012, 03:25 PM) Hi all.. I m new at guzheng.. Will start my class next week.. white wood dunhuang is a bit steep but the price for GZ increased tremendously last 2 yrs dueThe music center recommended me a guzheng by dunhuang.. Rm1800.. I ask them for code and stuff but they don't have it.. Only inform me is made of white wood.. And is for beginner.. Any advice.. Thanks to shortage of wood and living cost in China. and u paying premium too for the Dunhuang brand which also a very reliable brand. Honestly if I were you.. i will dig deeper and empty my pockets for a slightly better one than a white wood.... at least a normal red wood else you will regret it before you reach G4. 2yrs ago I paid US$2,900 including freight by AIR to Malaysia an elite model guzheng now it cost US$3,200/= excluding postage. In addition I paid RM2.6+ => US$1 and now is about RM3.0+ per USD. The price for Zheng will increase again soon as now its a lifestyle item for the PRC families. Added on May 30, 2012, 9:36 pm QUOTE(empire @ May 29 2012, 05:19 PM) For a beginner...Rm1800 is too much! Buy this instead: Brudder ... tis is an obsolete wood .... Steel strings and if I'm not wrong is between 16-20strings.http://www.mudah.my/Guzheng+Chinese+Tradit...rp-11197696.htm can only used to decorate CAFE or auction after another 30yrs if there is another GZ freak collector. Added on May 30, 2012, 9:42 pm QUOTE(ratloverice @ May 30 2012, 05:14 PM) I will be learning gz by myself in the US. Does anyone know where can I buy gz at there ? I've asked many people about it but no one knows the answer lol. where about are u in States? u can get the Zheng from http://www.soundofasia.com/ call the owner Carol and she is more than happy to help you. mention your info is via the owner of the Scarlet Bird #10B; she will knows is from me. In fact I FedEX one Zheng from her 2yrs ago; California to KampungKUL instead of from PRC. P/S: Ur a very lucky person tonite as I answered quires eventhough the 'magic' words missing. Try to be abit courtesy when requesting ... since u r in States try to use these words "please and thank you" as often as you may and let them know we kampung ppl got culture and moral. Not JAKUNS. Wat do you think of this model.. By the way thanks for the teacher recommendation going to start class next week but not under him..will be following a teacher name ying Red wood is not a white wood lar.... dun scare me ... me old ahpek wit very high BP one kenot tahan sudden shock. ![]() Now I am hunting for one of 20units GZ produced from Dunhuang. QUOTE(serenayap @ May 31 2012, 08:10 AM) Sorry bout that subang man, coz he said it in mandarin...my mandarin half pail water....till later while you advancing try to change the entire set of strings to Dunhuang Type B and change a good set I saw it ysday only knw is not white wood... Anyway I love the sound of it ... So brought it back home d ... of bridges; Zitan purple sandalwood .. that's the last and only thing you can do for upgrading ur piece of wood without burning a hole in ur pockets. But bear in mind and large you can't get these two items in malaysia. Oh yeah ... try to get a proper set of turtle nails ... not those cheaplat plastic nails. A good and proper foundation can build a MEGA tower later... 基本功 need to be tok-kong solid if you wan to excel ...... and I'm sure sifus like empire/faceless/xi-Ying/cassie agree with me. I only "kong-song" as I'm too lazy to do enhance my 基本功 until my sifu-chay aslo kenot tahan and kuat kuat lali from teaching me. |

QUOTE(serenayap @ Jun 1 2012, 11:37 AM) Hi subang man.. Thank you very much for all the advice. Will strengthen my basic first.. PM me when u really got sick of ur present ones. Try the present strings 1st until you advance to G3 or G4; or when you begin to enter competitions/performances then u start the upgrade as once you did then there is NO Regards to the upgrading of both strings n bridge where can i get it? And when do you recommend to change it? 1/2 years later or few mths? I be getting a box of turtle shell nails.. Is rm 80.. Expensive Nya.... U-turn back as you will keep on using the B strings unless you want to re-string the entire guzheng again to the normal strings. Gz strings especially #1 to #10 very easy to break one. B strings sell in sets ONLY. For info my gal even snapped string #21 once when she was in a foul mood during practice of 战台风. 2yrs ago I re-emphasis again until tis moment you can't get the B-strings in Malaysia/Singapore even Hongkong. In Shanghai they normally sell it to the performers/ uni students only as its very limited... imported Stainless steel nylon coated from Germany under speacial request by Dunhuang GZ for their high end guzhengs. For one set u can get it thru me if you really WANT it as I normally keep at least 6 sets for my gal's woods... but I need to check wit her 1st else wait till my next purchase. Bridges not as easy as the strings due to the high demand and limited production.. its custom made. RM80 for 1 box (1side of the hand only) is a fair price for the nails. I've even paid RM120/4 nails. But lately her sifu awarded her 2 complete sets of FINE turtle nails and one set of extreme rare bridges that he brought it back from Beijing for himself. Tat's where I know a good set of bridges can turn a mid-range GZ to a high end one. The sound produced can be very bright and loud and not "lumpy". QUOTE(serenayap @ Jun 17 2012, 08:33 PM) hi can anyone please teach me how to choose the correct size for the nail grooves?? I just check the nails for u. i think the music teacher sold me a too long one.. mine is about 3 cm..i got small finger. whn i ask her she say is lik that... then i google there are actually sizes for the grooves.. when i wear it lik 1 cm jutting out of my finger.. Mei^2 got at least 30+ nails in varies sizes and thickness. Some with grooves and some without. Some cheaplat looks alike plastic turtle nails and some real thick one. So i reakon at the end of the day go to the centre and choose ur own nails that fits your fingers. Cheaplat nails but sometime can do wonders and budget. ![]() Good nails but when chips so will ur heart. LOL! I'm very sure the info u want is mentioned there.I cannot widely recomands ppl to go to certain centre openly as most of the well known guzheng centres in klang valley i know them personally in one way or another and I don't drive a W210 benz. CCMA sunway mentari is the centre for Gz examination (21 strings).... organising exam is their core $$$$.I did checked CCMA sunway mentari for the classes, but they recommend me to go to Jln Othman to take the GZ class, and they kinda want their students to take exam..not sure how is the GZ fees like...wud love to start next month if can find a suitable teacher nearby But nobody can force u if u dun want to sit for the exam right ! Just finish the songs within ur grade and i'm sure ur teacher will advance to the next chapter. My gal didn't sit for any exam right until she finishes her G6 songs then to G8 and G9 .. they just encourage u to sit but at the end it's u whois the paymaster. Added on October 29, 2012, 10:35 pm QUOTE(faceless @ Oct 29 2012, 09:03 AM) Wow, you status had been elevated to serious contributor. Now promoting guzheng by getting sponsor. I'm just trying to help out as the previous conducted one the fund and support level was very limited.I most likely will not join. I still cant play a full song without mistake. Fisherman Serenade I still can't play in spite of playing it for 2 years. I practise for our CNY gathering. Hope can do it then see how Empire comments first. Added on October 29, 2012, 11:19 pm QUOTE(melody21 @ Oct 29 2012, 10:28 AM) is the teacher still teaching in Taipan? prefer to have class in Taipan.. Ok... me getting very cheong hai again.I went for a trial class in sunway at one of the music school, they have a part time teacher teaching GZ, I only realise she is teaching the Dun Huang 23 string but Malaysian syllabus, she says they modifu the syllabus to suit Malaysian who prefer to learn for pleasure and the songs they teaches are more modernised. not sure if 23 string is better than 21 string, she says the GZ cost RM4K above for 23 string, in SS2 Dun Huang there is no right or wrong in which syllabus you going to choose. MUSIC is MUSIC. Just like in cooking...... hopes you are not like any one of gals. ... # Nowadays the gals don't cook like their mums, they drink like their Dads . # In normal cooking... we ccok using pots, pans and woks. right ? How about cooking with mircowave oven? U can still cook.. but limited choices lor... 90% cook books way of cooking is the normal way not microwave. So u cook alone and with you microwave gang lor. come competition or want to venture in new dishes ... ho ho ho.... have fun in modification to suit ! ============================================== same thing... most of the scores are written for 21strings... 23strings only remains in "DunHuang" KampungKUL ... and nothing affiliated with the Dunhuang Shanghai.... that was yrs ago... (thousand apologise to any 23strings teacher in the forum if I'm wrong). Last year during the 2nd International Malaysia Zheng Open Championship there were quite a number of the 23strings contestants but none of them made to semi finals. Mayb the panel judges dun know how to grade them or perhaps they think we are still in dino era (my humble opinion) ! Technically these 2 type are two different in each other way. One emphasize lots of method and 基本功 while the other is as long as u play the correct sound ... why worry. This tie back to the above example... as long as the food is cooked ...wah lar who cares.... microwave or normal stove doesn't matter. Job accomplished and that's IT ????!!!!! BUT taste is not the same........ I would like my veg stir fried with wok hai .... not 'ting' in 3min and serve . ================================================================ Been to Sg for guzheng workshops and just got back from the Hkg Open youth Zheng championship..... ONLY 21 strings used. But I still have an old highly paid 23 steel strings Zitan guzheng hibernating in its box. Yearning for its owner to fiddle with it which I think very unlikely until my next after generation..... present from ah kong. Choice of the guzheng for 23 strings are very limited and the steel strings not only expensive but limited places to obtain too. While the 21 strings gz you can get it almost every chinese music instrument shop in town and I can say 99% are all Shanghai / Yangchow / Tianyi Zheng. Only the last 1% is the Xian Zheng and can be seen in PJ Keegan or another one is in Pg. Honestly the price you pay for a beginner 23 string guzheng you can get a mid-range 21 string from Dunhuang or Yangchow. The slightly better one of the 23 strings I can get an elite level for a 21 strings. P/S :- Brudder faceless... Meimei accumalated another 15yrs old black DunHuang rare Zitan recently. Now hunting for the ultimate "倚天劍". ===================================================================== I think i said enough ...... the rest is up to you. ..... these two syllabus not like wat u comparing between ABRSM and Trinity. Its like something using a keyboard and a piano in playing Beethoven Pathetique Sonata, 3rd movement. Feel free and surf this link. https://www.facebook.com/#!/SoundofChina?fref=ts She is a personal frd and 100% trusted seller .... one of my gal's wood is from her (Carol Chang). Her wood flew the entire world (China - US - Germany - MY) before landed back to KampungKUL and all her strings are from this centre. This post has been edited by subangman: Oct 29 2012, 11:59 PM |

QUOTE(faceless @ Nov 5 2012, 02:01 PM) hahaha...... I hate to disappoint but it might be hard.Right after Meimei SPM at the end of month .... she'll be down to JB from 1st till 9th Dec. (Rehearsal, performance, 3days GZ camp and 2days charity performances in JB....... her sifu had been planning and postponing these events just to suit her scheule for awhile. Rush back to KampungKUL just in time for her prom with another performance which yet to collograph (contemporary latin). Then road trip for couple of days with a bunch of high school leavers mates to dun know where which I lost track and back to Ah Pa for Winter Solstice feastival with Yeh-Yeh and later X'mas performances. This month she can't be available as tie down with SPM and I'm on standby mode to be on exile until end of the year facing the great cold winter with these old bones of mine. Normally I'll be with her no matter which part of world but this time I hate but have to let go as might be out from Kampung at any time. So u guys go ahead and I'll try my utmost to be with you for the gathering..... if possible I'll bring her and some duty free goodies |
