I'm planning to backup my data directly from my external HDD to DVD

So i'm asking is it advisable to do so? will it harm my external HDD in any way?

Not sure if your burning software will cache everything before burning to dvd. But either way, it wouldn't damage the external hd. The worse that could happen is if the cable is not attached properly, and the hd "disappear" in the middle of the burn, the DVD may not be properly made.
