It's weird, but they really do... I guess the lawmakers work hard...

Do you mean an overall band score of 8.0? Because 8.0 for each section would be unreasonable at best.

Yes, we know that this will cut out 90% of all applicants. Yes, there have been legal challenges regarding the English language test. Some might even argue that the current policy favors white people from English-speaking nations. International students discuss this matter at great length when they get together.

But "unreasonable"? That is a very wide word that ignores other variables when a nation decides to accept an individual to settle in its territory on a permanent basis.

actually, they do NOT need you to have band 8......it's points based........the minimum is band 6, but you will get zero point, you get 10 points for band 7 and 20 points for band 8.....

however, a fresh graduate with no other merits will need band 8's 20 points to reach the cut-off eligibility points........

if you however have other extra points, like work experience, higher qualifications, other language skills, studied in 'regional oz' etc, you can get the 65 points even with zero points from ielts.........

Their words don't make it clear (at least to me) whether it is an overall band score of 8.0 or a minimum of 8.0 in every module that they require.

However to achieve this one might just resit the exams. The cost is surely not too great if the end goal is to emigrate.

I suppose it is unfortunate that IELTS is used, but I don't expect Australia to use anything other than their own (jointly administered) testing system. And how we feel is immaterial if we are subject to it anyway.

Maybe when they found that some migrants (including tons of citizens) could hardly comprehend or maintain an understandable conversation in English (thus making it hard for them to integrate with the wider society - Australia's favourite line), they felt they needed to correct this (and I completely agree with this, except for the testing system).

To be honest, if you want to migrate permanently to a country that speaks English as its first language, I don't see much difficulty or reason why your English shouldn't be up to a minimum of 8.0 across all modules.

i hold a band of 7.5 for my IELTS .. screwed my writing for 6.5 sweat.gif ..

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-ski...ity-english.htm

from what i understand, you will only need band 6 and above for all components based on this

QUOTE
You must demonstrate that you meet the English language threshold.

The English language threshold is at the competent English level which is a minimum score of at least 6 in each of the four components of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test system or other language test and score specified by the Minister. While no points will be awarded for competent English, if you have obtained this score you are able to apply for a visa as long as you meet the other threshold visa requirements.

u will be awarded with 10 points for proficient level of english (7.0 and above) and superior with 20 points (8.0 and above) .

send to who?

if it is a person, post it....need not be registered......

if it is a bank, also post it, but better registered, as receipt of draft will be recorded.........

alternately, ask someone who going to bring it with him/her.......

btw, there are no more bank drafts, it's called banker's cheque nowadays.........

I'm so glad that the two of you replied me so fast! Thanks a lot! I'm leaving to study in Perth in 2 weeks so needed some guide to set up a bank account so some of my friends there told me banker's cheque will be a better option for my parents to send me money. Registered post means just put in a normal envelope and post it not pos ekpress right?
If you have done it before can anyone please help me? Just need to know what to do after I get a banker's cheque frm a bank. My mum is a little blur about this.

Thanks!

1. For the first time, have some cash ready for incidentals during the first few days, maybe aud200. The rest, buy a banker's cheque in AUD and bring it with you. The cheque should be in your name. When you arrive, go to a bank and open an account, and deposit the cheque immediately. It takes 3 working days to clear.

2. Subsequently, when your parents want to send money, they buy a banker's cheque (in AUD) in your name, put it into an ordinary envelope, and post it. If you want more security (but often slower), send by registered post. That is NOT post laju/express. They will put a sticker on the envelope with a tracking number and give your parents a receipt. The downside to registered post is, when it is delivered, someone MUST acknowledge receipt of the letter, so if the postman finds nobody at home, they cannot deliver, but leave you a notice. You may then either arrange a time when you are home for them to deliver, or (in lazy msia) you will have to go to the main post office to collect it..........

after you receive the cheque, just go to your bank and deposit it, like a normal cheque......

Why not open a bank account via the internet? Funds can be transferred anytime electronically, and can be withdrawn upon arrival at the bank.

Obviously there are some costs involved (banks here will use intermediaries and either of these will normally charge a small fee).

you cannot open accounts vis internet......unless you are already an existing customer of the bank....

oz is still relatively lax, but you will still need some documentation of identity....

uk is now VERY strict with opening new bank accounts, and you will need a covering letter from the university before they will allow you as a foreigner to open accounts........

there is one bank however that allows you to open an account in uk, if you are already their customer in msia......but they have a minimal presence in oz....
